Doed the subwoofer have to be exposed or can it, say, be kept under the desk?

Keep it under the desk. that's where mine is and it works great!

hi yes it can, in fact it is best to put it into a corner and you will instantly notice a great improvement and depth to the bass . the frequency is non directional and therefore does not need to be pointed or placed on the left or right.
this process works for anything that produces bass. i have a Bose port sound dock in my bathroom and it rocks, a m-cube 7.1 in my living room and 5.1 in the den and each sub cube has 2x8" subs in and they work much better hidden behind the sofa in the corner. hope this helps
