    The truth

    Thinking of getting a smart cover? Here's what nobody will tell you...

    1. They're stupidly expensive for what they are but also vital. Watch out for third party ones if you have an iPad 3 because their magnets might not be the right sort, so won't work.
    2. Although lightweight the smart cover does add weight to the whole iPad caboodle. The iPad 3 I have is already pretty heavy. With a smart cover attached its like I'm holding a large and heavy hardback book. My hands get sore (but this is perhaps more a fault of the iPad 3).
    3. Typical "form over function" Apple design: When used to hold the iPad almost at 90 degrees to the table, the way the smart cover folds means the felt side goes against the table. So you'd better make sure the surface is clean and dry (not easy in a cafe for example!) because the felt is what touches your screen when the cover is closed. Accidentally get some grit in there and... Ouch. Scratched screen.
    4. The magnets that hold the cover to the glass aren't that strong. It's far from a vice-like grip. I don't think the cover will open in a bag provided the hinge side is topmost but gravity can pull the cover off in certain circumstances, or certainly cause it to sag in the middle.

    In summary this is a vital piece of equipment that works but its primary benefit is that it's small and lightweight. The only alternatives are third party covers that are bigger but which come with physical clasps, catches or Velcro to hold the cover closed. The price is silly but you've just paid four hundred quid for a gadget so let's be honest you don't have a leg to stand on. Buying Apple stuff can be like moving house -- supifyingly expensive but it's better not to think about it too much.

    Would be great if it were more durable

    I love the smart cover. The material is perfect--helps keeps the iPad from slipping when it's on my lap, the folding cover is really handy and the magnetic clasps are awesome--easy to out on and off, but secure when needed.

    HOWEVER, the quality is shocking for Apple. The colour has worn off all the edges of mine, leaving shabby, white edges, the magnets have damaged the iPad, and now the plastic is starting to peel off. Very disappointing.

    Marks easily

    I have read lots of reviews of this product, but nobody seems to have mentioned the fact that it marks really easily. Even a drop of water will mark it and will not come off. I've tried cleaning it, but nothing works and it looks horrible. I am definitely changing back to the full cover, not just because they offer more protection, but also because they look cleaner. I hate my blue cover, it looks a mess and I really haven't had it that long, although sadly too long to be able to return it.

    Not worth the money

    I like the concept of the cover. I like that you can use it to prop up your Ipad to watch movies and type. But...

    I have only had the cover for a few days and it is starting to looking very dirty on the inside and outside. Also, if I am going to pay $40 for a cover, I want a little more protection. I had to buy a seperate back cover for my IPad.

    All in all, I do like the cover. I just don't think it was worth what I paid.

    It's okay.

    I got the iPad and this cover back in August. I just have to say, the smart cover left marks on the side of my iPad and I cannot get it off. Also there are marks all over the hinge on the smart cover. Not worth $40. The cover is just cheap to me. I liked the original iPad case better. Wish they kept with the case not the smart cove.

    iPad Smart Cover

    I just recieved my cover, and it is very nice. However, I would like to have something that covers the back side of my iPad. This is a great cover for the front screen, but leaves the back side exposed. I would also like more lift from the support of cover when using from desktop view.

    I disliked it because this product gets dirty easily,doesn't stay in place,it isn't functional at all...Don't wasted your money,buy something else.

    Nice product

    Have two of these one grey and one blue . The blue one is prone to fading
    Good points
    Acts as a stand
    Puts the iPad to sleep
    When using the iPad it can be put behind the iPad giving a nice soft surface to hold the iPad
    Bad points
    Does not protect the back of iPad therefore resulting in lots of scratches on the back of iPad
    The blue color fade to a light blue color
    Does not protect the iPad completly ( found this the hard way ) dents have been formed on my iPad and it really hurts me to see those dents , so best is to take the smart case

    Dent.....

    I've had it for a couple weeks now and a dent in it would start building up. Now it looks terrible and I hardly use it anymore. Really DISSAPPOINTED.

    it's a "Front" cover and that's all.

    looks nice. but only cover front. think triple before order as you can't return. esp if you intend to let your kids using the pad since kid will shake and drop ten times more often than you did.

    I got the iPad 2 for Christmas and I love it!! I got the blue case and it is okay. I am not crazy about the shade of blue. My dad is going to get me the pink one. The shade of blue is not as pretty as it looks on the computer
