Answer
First, make sure your Mac meets the requirements for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. If it does, then you need to purchase and install Snow Leopard and use software update to install the 10.6.8 update. Then you can use the Mac App Store to purchase Mountain Lion, which will enable iCloud.

Can I install MAC os X 10.6 on my Imac 2.0 Duo Core
- Asked by Timothy N from Tequesta
- Dec 24, 2011
- Flag as inappropriate
Answer
Yes you can.
Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) requires any Intel-based Mac with at least 1GB of memory.
However, Lion (OS 10.7) requires at minimum an "Intel Core 2 Duo" CPU with at least 2 GB of memory.
(Note: For Lion, be careful when reading the name of the processor. "Intel Core 2 Duo" is not the same as the "Intel Core Duo". The "2" in "Intel Core 2 Duo" does not refer to the GHz speed. I assume the "2.0" in your query refers to the GHz. When you go to "About this Mac" you should see a processor listed similar to "2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo". If you see the string "Intel Core 2 Duo" you can also install Lion if you desire.)- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

I reinstalled os-x 10.6 snow leopard and it eats up around 7GB of diskspace; can I optimize it further?
OS-X was preinstalled and took about 10GB of diskspace so I reinstalled and was left with around 7GB. But I didn't have the choice to remove the printer drivers e.g. I remember that I had the chance to do so when I didn't erased the whole harddrive.
I remember that the printer drivers needed around 800MB and as I have the driver for my printer here I don't need support for 100 other printers :).
But how can I delete the printer drivers?
And what else can I do?
Thanks!- Asked by Andreas S

Answer
I think you need to backup all of your files and reinstall 10.6 Snow Leopard!
Than you have the chance to reinstall your printer driver.

Can I install the the iMac OS X install DVD in my MacBook Pro, or I must use the MacBook Pro installer DVD?
I do have one intel MacBook Pro with the OS 10.4.11 yet. As I was told, I must updade my software to OS 10.5 leopard before install the 10.6 Snow Leopard.
My brother just bought a iMac and it comes with the Mac OS 10.5.6 DVD installer. Can use this iMac DVD on my MacBook Pro?- Asked by Felipe I

The gray software restore discs that come with every Mac are designed to be used only with that specific model. An iMac restore disc will not work with a MacBook Pro.
If you are currently using Mac OS X 10.4.11, your best option for upgrading your MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard is to purchase the Mac Box Set for $169, which includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '09, and iWork '09.- Answered by Mike B from Roswell

I have a Mac OS X 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, can I upgrade to Snow Leopard and then Lion?
- Asked by Huascar M from Port Saint Lucie

Best Answer
Yes to Snow Leopard.
But for Lion you will need to increase your memory to at least 2gb.
Once Snow Leopard is installed and updated to OS 10.6.8, and you have at least 2GB of memory, then you can upgrade to Lion.
You don't say which Mac OS X you are currently running. If it is 10.6, then you already have Snow Leopard. (Lion is 10.7).- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

Answer
Unfortunately, No your best bet is to purchase Snow Leopard from Apple and then follow these steps
1. Boot the mac while simultaneously pressing and holding the alt/option key
2. A screen should appear, insert the DVD wait for a Disk icon to show and select it using the arrow keys, then press enter/return
3. If followed correctly a boot screen showing the apple logo and a loading symbol should appear
4. A screen saying Welcome to Mac OS X should now appear
5. Click continue/accept until you can see a white bar at the top of the screen with the apple logo and a few other things
6. Click Utilities then Disk Utility from this menu
7. Click on your hard drive then the partition tab
8. From here select the + sign and create a new partition, make sure it is Mac OS X Journal Formatted
*9. Delete the old Partition probably named Macintosh HD by selecting it and clicking - (WARNING: this will delete all files previously on your hard drive)
10. Then quit Disk Utility and continue the installation making sure to select the hard drive partition you created earlier
11. Presto Mac OS X is installed and your mac is fixed
*Optional step; not required but recommended for space- Answered by Ryan M from Southwick

How do I know how much disk space I have on my computer?
- Asked by Troy M from Castle Rock

Answer
On desktop, click hard drive icon to select it.
Go to file menu and select Get Info.
(or simply "right-click" on hard drive icon and choose Get Info.)
You will see "Capacity" of drive, and "Available" and "Used" space.
Note: you may have several "hard drive icons" on a single physical drive. That is because the Mac treats each partition as a separate drive. To see all partitions, launch the "Disk Utility.app". On the left side, it will list all the partitions on each physical drive, whether mounted on the desktop or not. You can select any partition and click on "info" at top of the "Disk Utility" window to see space used and free space on that partition.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

can I upgrade from OS X version 10.4.11 to 10.6 Snow Leopard with a 2.16 ghz Intel Core 2Duo Processor.

Yes. But make sure you have at least 1GB of memory first.
I have the same processor, and I upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.6 using the $29 Snow Leopard DVD. Although, the $29 Snow Leopard DVD supposedly does not "automatically" upgrade from 10.4.11 to 10.6, all the tools to upgrade are on the DVD. Here are the steps I used:
1) First, keep (or clone to an external bootable drive) your old bootable partition with the old OS on it. This allows you to have a backup and still be able to start up with OS 10.4.11, if you wish to, after Snow Leopard is installed.
2) Start doing a clean install of Snow Leopard to a fresh partition. In order to do a clean install with the $29 DVD, you will have two options when you start up from the DVD... "Utilities" or "Continue". Select "Utilities" and when the Mac restarts, select "Disk Utilities" from the "Utilities" menu. Do a format of your "fresh" partition and then QUIT "Disk Utilities".
3) Now Snow Leopard will begin installing. During the install, it will search your Mac for all other partitions with an older OS and then ask you if you want to import your OS Settings, Applications and Files from one of those other partitions. Do this for a very smooth upgrade transition to the new OS. (If you decide to not import, then you will end up with a clean install of Snow Leopard instead.)
4) After restarting with the newly installed Snow Leopard, go to the Apple Menu and do Software Updates to bring your system up to OS 10.6.8.
5) All my Apps from OS 10.4.11 continue to work in Snow Leopard, but some of my printer drivers and scanner utility did not. Until I found those upgrades, I was still able to start up from the OS 10.4.11 partition to use my printers and scanner. To change the Start Up partition, either use the Start Up Disk in System Preferences... or press OPTION after you turn your Mac on.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

I have 2 Macs, can I purchaes 1 disk of snow leopard and use it for both Macs?
- Asked by Thomas G from Columbus

Answer
If you purchased the single-license disk, then you are allowed to install on just one Mac.
If you have a family-pack license, then you are allowed to install on up to five macs in a household. (Since the introduction of Lion and Mountain Lion, I don't think the family pack is still offered, especially since the price of the single license disk is now only $20 at the online Apple Store.)
The disk for the single-license and the family-pack-license is the same. It is the license that determines how many macs you are allowed to install to.- Answered by Ewald W from Vancouve

When you install Snow Leopard, do you have to reinstall non-apple programs?
I use Photoshop CS2 on a daily basis, and could really benefit from the increased speed offered by Snow Leopard. But I lost my install disks for the Adobe Creative Suite-so if installing Snow Leopard is going to delete Photoshop-it's not gonna work for me. Haha.

No, your machine has a PowerPC G5 processor, and the Intel processor and motherboard architecture are completely different. The only solution to upgrading is to sell this machine and buy a new Intel based one.
