If it does, and you have at least 2GB of memory, then go to App Store (the App Store should be on your Mac if you have OS 10.6.8). Purchase and download Mountain Lion and install. The current version of Mountain Lion is OS 10.8.4.

Note: OS 10.6.8 is the last version of Snow Leopard released, therefore you have the "newest version" of Snow Leopard.

Through the App Store you can then upgrade directly to any later OS (OS 10.7, OS 10.8, or OS 10.9).

However, the maximum OS you can upgrade to depends on your MacBook's Model Identifier (found in "About This Mac" - "More Info" - "System Report").

Model MacBook1,1 (which only has Intel Core Duo processor) can only go to OS10.6.
Model ID MacBook2,1 through MacBook4,2 can go up to OS10.7.
Model ID MacBook5,2 can go up to OS10.9.
