    hdd videocameras and mpeg2

There are a few reviews here that seem to think that mpeg2 problems are the fault of Apple. They aren't. If I remember correctly, Apple can't include mpeg2 codecs with quicktime because of some complicated licensing thing. If they had put it in with quicktime pro, it would have increased the cost from $30 to $50, for an outdated codec that few people need. Now, for me personally, and my JVC hard disc camcorder, using this (MPEG-2 Playback) and MPEG Streamclip, all my .MOD files playback and convert to other formats perfectly fine. AUDIO INCLUDED! If you don't know where to find Streamclip, it's free and can be found along with almost every other piece of Mac software at versiontracker

I "upgraded" my Quicktime Pro with this component. What a waste of perfectly good money and time. Quicktime will play the MPEG-2 stream, but will not reproduce the audio track. If you don't mind watching silent movies it's just dandy.

I eagerly await the update to this. I'm holding my breath....

Video will now play, but no audio.
Video with audio plays fine using alternative player VLC media player (free).
Looks like this Codec needs some more work, sadly in my case £15 wasted.

Hi, I have a Panasonic DVD Ram disc recorder that produces VRO files. Streamclip/Quicktime would not work at first. I downloaded the file and the sound/video now works.

Frankly I cannot understand all the one starrers out there.

There seem to be a lot of people having problems with audio. If, for example, you're wanting to extract the contents of a DVD so you can edit them in say Final Cut, you'll need to use MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOB files ripped from the DVD to a codec that editing packages understand. Without the QT MP2 Playback installed (at the time of writing, Feb09, onto QT Player 7.6) this isn't possible.

In your editing package you may need to render the clips you export from MPEG Streamclip in order to be able to hear the audio, though in iMovie '08 I don't even think that's necessary.

The thing couldn't possibly be simpler or cleaner to use!

DOWNLOAD: the download tab is right there on your receipt when you buy the thing. It's the word highlighted in blue in your order summary and it reads, cryptically enough I admit, "Download" with a little downward pointing blue arrow next to it.

It's tip top, don't diss it.

Can't open my video recorded yesterday on a Sony hdd camcorder and downloaded onto my Imac I'm running to a PC friend for the first time (ouch). Applecare Applications Dept. told me I do have Mpeg-2 capability - now 5 hours later and tired, I have downloaded Squared 5 which my PC friend found for me (ouch again) to find out that I need this playback component. But upon reading the reviews, I am disappointed enough with this bad apple for today and will not chance downloading.

Big Waste - We can't Even Install It

We've had this for 8 months and can't use it because it keeps having an error during installation, and there are no supporting documents on how to address the issue. We love Quicktime and Apple Software, but this one disappoints.

The whole movie-editing-done-easy that Apple advertises is compromised by making us purchase this garbage that does not even work. Come on Apple, this isn't like you.

I received several MPEG-2 files for broadcast and tried this for viewing.
CONFUSING - demands QT6, when QT7 is in play, download folder is named "For QuickTime 6.3" - is anyone awake there at Apple Store? Says use QT Updater to install - NO!, that's a link to 3rd party plug ins.
DIDN'T WORK. "The movie could not be opened" alert on atteemption to open all files. Unhelpful.
INSTALLED? Installer said successful, but QT preference panes do not indicate if installed or not.
Maybe we got sent some duff files, but this purchase & install procedure is rubbish on its own, and leaves me in the dark about bth installation and file status

This is my first mac, Up until now i have loved it, I'm not impressed i need this to start with for simple things that can be done on a PC, It annoyed me off even more that my OS X is to new for this to work. Please look at the specs of your system before you waste $30 like me.

I have just purchased this and it does work, contrary to what some reviewers say. However it is a bit galling to be having to pay extra for this when it should just work "out of the box", a phrase commonly used when referring to Apple products. But all I am concerned with is being able to use my mpeg files and get the footage off of my camcorder in a usable format, and it does exactly that.

.mpg to mp4 conversion with audio

    • Written by from Hull

When used for the above, this Quicktime Add-On was needed for running alongside MPEG Streamclip.

These two applications combined allowed me to convert .mpeg footage files from a non-mac-compatible camcorder (Sony HD 2007) to mp4 files that could be played back and edited in iMovie HD. Although i must add that i have Quicktime Pro (which allowed me to send the files to MPEG Streamclip).

Also, the audio didn't play back in Quicktime, which is why i needed MPEG Streamclip, which solved that issue.

This software was easy and fast to download.

don't buy, unless you bought your sony camcorder to become charlie chaplin or another silent film star.
image with no sound is the best you can ever hope for.
shame on you, mr. jobs. can you bring 'talkies' to the mac user anytime this century.

why is this something we have to pay for separately anyhow?

I am trying to use this with Streamclip 1.8 (as per it's instructions) in order to convert footage taken on a new camera that records to DVD. (just great! not!) After downloading, Streamclip is telling me I have an old version, points me at a web address that then gives further instructions that don't exist. Sorry Apple -- Shouldn't be this hard!

    Quicktime-Pro with Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Plug-in

    • Written by from Portsmouth

88 of 157 people found this useful

Having bought Quicktime-Pro and the MPEG2 player plug-in I do not have the facility to trim MPEG2 movie files. It's is not made clear in the advertising that Quicktime-Pro will only playback MPEG2 files and not allow you to edit them (the trim function is disabled for MPEG2 only?) once you have downloaded the QT MPEG2 Player. This is disappointing and probably means that I've wasted my money! For the most part I like Apple but when they upset you they really get under your fingernails!

This thing works fine with my Sony DVD handycam, I do get audio as well, all you need to do is change the settings, to tell the softwere not to read just the .vob(which is video only) but include both the audio and the video files while it reads it.

The previous review may have a valid point with respect to the product description for the MPEG-2 playback plug-in being confusing, but even MPEG Streamclip (the free utility which reads MPEG2 files) requires you purchase the Apple Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback plug-in to work with MPEG2 files.

The plug-in does work for most MPEG-2 playback including archived DVD files and therefore, I recommend purchasing this product.

Like a couple of the others, I should have read the reviews, wanted it to play VOB file, which it does, would be good if I could hear teh audio though as it does not play it!!!!!! And like one of the other fellow reviewers, I do think that Apple could be clearer within the product description on what the software does and does not do, especially for the lay-man.
