Will this work in a Mac Pro 1,1 ? I know it doesn't mention on the compatibility, but Apple is known for underselling graphics cards

Best AnswerIt Works. I just installed one on my 2006 1.1 Mac pro. BUT: I connected each of my two 22" monitors to the mini-display ports using adapters to DVI cables, which works perfectly. Then, when I connected my HD TV to the DVI port, it won't work. I read something about it being overridden by the MiniDisplay Ports. Not sure why this happens, but Apple, if your listening, a software fix for this would be greatly appreciated! I want to use it to run my Netflix on the big 42"...

Target Display Mode?
Hello all,
Ok so here's my situation. I have a mid 2010 iMac and a 2008 Mac Pro tower that I recently acquired in a trade for my older Macbook Pro.
I'd like to upgrade the Mac Pro with a wicked graphics card so I can game using bootcamp, and use my iMac for work and OS stuff and be able to switch between the two only using a single screen.
I know that my iMac is the model that has the target display mode, but I'm worried that this card (Radeon HD 5770) won't be compatible with target display mode.
Can anyone confirm or clarify this for me? Or suggest a card that does work?
Thanks!- Asked by Ryan L from Kelowna

AnswerGreetings,
I have a 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 Tower with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro. Currently I'm running two full HD monitors off this one card and have not had a problem.
I don't have an iMac so I can't test it out for you, but from what I've gleaned from the net, it should not be a problem.
Do a Google search for "Target Display Mode". Find the link for an article on this subject by Tom Nelson.
Indications are that all is needed for your iMac to work in Target Display Mode is a video signal at your Thunderbolt port or DisplayPort, or you can select Target Display Mode manually by using Command F2.
The ATI Radeon HD 5770 card is equipped with 2 DisplayPorts and 1 DVI port.
All you need is the proper cable. Apple now sell a shorter 50cm version.
Regardless, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit is a good buy and is compatible with all the latest and greatest software.
Cheers

Can I fit two ATI HD 5770's in a 2008 MacPro 3,1? I'm worried about the height of each card as there are only two PCIe 2.0 slots available. Thank you.

Best AnswerYes you can fit two but it may block one of your slower pcie slots. But there are two power connectors for two video cards on teh mother board and I know folks who are doing it. I also know it will be tricky to get the second card in once the first card is in the first slot. I have one 5770 and was using my 8800 as well but the 8800 just fried. I am going to put my older ati 2600xt in so I can run four monitors.
There however have been issues with the 5770s in general. They sometimes produce green pixels in the black parts of your desktop if you have a black picture or something with a lot of black like a widescreen movie with black bars, Some folks have them and some don't. I had some issues with my 30 inch and the dvi port of the 5770, now I have the mini display port to dual link dvi adapter and some of my issues are gone. Search the discussions there are quite a few posts on the 5770. Hope that helps.- Answered by Lance M from Piermont

Which is more powerful in a Mac Pro: Dual ATI 5570's or a single ATI 5870?

AnswerSeeing as MacOS doesn't support crossfire and can't take advantage of the duel cards, the single 5870 is the more powerful card.

graphics card upgrade on an early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1. very confused as to what to buy.
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
There seem to be very few options, I would really like a definitive answer as to what to do. We play WOW and do video editing with Final Cut. We also are using an old monitor from our previous Mac, so have a special cable to make it work. Currently running a Nvidia 8800Gt so needs to be as good or better. Looks like the 5770 may be the best option, but unsure as to whether it will work, since not running 10.6.- Asked by Kathleen A S from Auburn

Best AnswerHi,
You have a very similar configuration to my own machine.
The 8800GT was a good card, but often suffered from overheating, it's also quite old with GDDR3 memory; you will definitely notice a benefit with the HD 5770
Yes this card is compatible with the 2008 Mac Pro (the MacPro3,1).
I installed this card last night with no trouble. A few things to note however.
1. The card is rather large, and is designed to use all the space in the PCI Express bracket. Take care inserting it into the chassis of the machine, the power cable was a little fiddly to attach too.
NOTE: once the card was installed (I use PCIe slot 1 only one of the two screws on) the PCI bracket was fastenable.
2. The card is recognised by Mac OS X 10.6.4 (this is what Apple specifies for the card) with basic functionality, however you will need to upgrade to 10.6.5 or newer as the Mac drivers for the card are actually bundled in those newer updates.
As with any new hardware, reset your machine's PRAM once you're finished installing it.
If you use Bootcamp, there are drivers for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 from the AMD website.
I hope this helps you out, enjoy your new card!- Answered by Peter M from Armidale

Why does this require a Mac Pro (Mid 2010)? Q+A suggests older mac pro's may work? I would like to buy this, but am afraid to.
Why does the description on the apple page tell us that a mid 2010 mac pro is required?
Reading Q+A, this seems to be inaccurate.
I am afraid to buy this. But I would like a video card with a mini-dvi port, and not sure what my options are for a 2007 mac pro is currently uses a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 T.- Asked by Neil J

AnswerI installed this card in a mac pro 1,1 running 10.6.4 and it "worked" but was not fully supported - the card could not be calibrated or run on all resolutions, and some graphics heavy programs (phocus for example) crashed on startup. Upgrading to 10.6.5 has resolved all problems on my machine - the card works perfectly all be it my mac pro is 3+ years old.

Will this work in a Mac Pro 1,1 ? Yes, but will it support two 30" Apple Cinema displays?
Have a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 dual 3 GHz processor, 16 GB of Ram. Installed an ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit (easy). One 30" Cinema display shows up on the DVI connection. The second will not show up at all (not even at a lower resolution) with the standard single Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter. My question is will the second 30" Apple Cinema Display show-up with a DUAL Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter? (before I spend another hundred bucks on another adapter)?

AnswerHi Steven I have the very same setup and it works without any problems. At first I had to unplug the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter after the computer started and then replug it in. After I installed Lion everything worked just fine no replugging or anything.

I have Mac Pro 2007 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT but that not work with Final Cut X if I change my graphics card to HD 5770, this card work with FCX
I was visited some Apple stores & MacMall and nobody give me the correct answer about that What Graphics Card upgrade my ATI Radeon X1900 XT from my Mac Pro 2007 (serial number G87022U5UPZ) that I invest more than $10,000 dollars, and I can't play Final Cut X. I am very upset.

Best AnswerI have Mac Pro 2007 also (MacPro2,1, 2x3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon). I bought this card for the same reason as yours. It does work with Final Cut Pro X. I was able to purchase and download the application without getting that "my Mac's spec doesn't meet their requirement" message. And it launches fine with new video card.
Installing is tricky, you have remove all other PCI cards in your system first before you install this monster card. This is because you have to tilt it in an angle in order to get the card inside the system, then tilt it back flat and plug into PCI slot. After installing, just put back all of your PCI cards in the system.
Interesting that the packaging comes in as official Apple branded box, not ATI branded box.- Answered by Chiravouth N from Trumbull

Best AnswerYes, this card will work in all Mac Pros. Unlike NVidia graphics cards that only ship with either a 32 or a 64 bit EFI ROM, ATi cards always come with both 32 and 64 bit EFIs, which allows them to be completely backwards compatible with all Mac Pros.
