This was a Christmas present from my 3 children however I was at the store when it was purchased. Wanting a hands free unit for my iPhone and having just purchased a Subaru Impreza 2008, I wasn't sure what to buy but the sales person said it was the best on the market. Yesterday I installed the Tunebase with no dramas and had a number of 'test' incoming and outgoing calls. There was no echo as reported elsewhere, I followed the instructions regarding volume, the stand didn't move around, the sound was great and overall I am delighted with the product. I am able to listen to my downloaded audiobook with no drama and I'm looking forward to my long drive tomorrow to try it out full on.

    Mazda 3 1.6 2010-Q4 (S'pore Version) - NOT FIT

For those who has a car where the connector is located inside a small compartment next to the gear knob (Auto), this product might not fit you. It will either block the USB port or the jolt is not able to push in completely due to the position of the protrusion gooseneck. Beware if your gear knob is too close to the connector, you might not be able to move the knob to 'P' position if TuneBase in used.

For installation, follow the instruction in the manual and TuneBase should able to grasp firmly to the connector, besides, additional rubber ring is provided in case if the connection is still loose.

Junk junk junk. It spins around in the cigarette lighter. The sliding bracket for the iPhone gets permanently stuck real easy. Idea is good. Too bad implementation is so flawed.

    almost perfect

I bought this when I had an iPhone 3G. The button to control the iPhone's music worked perfect and charged beautifully. Like any FM transmitter, there is static on some channels and it takes time to find a decent channel, but none will ever be as good as a direct line to your car stereo. The base does turn a bit in the cigarette lighter when going around big or tight turns because of the weight of the phone. I thought I would be able to take phone calls while it in the dock (with voices going thru the FM to my car) but I can never hear anyone and I have to take the phone out of the unit to talk. I really like that the iPhone can be put into landscape mode with docked to use navigation apps. I also like that the cradle is recessed and it can pretty much handle any case the phone is in.

I've upgraded to iPhone 4 and have found the control button does not work perfect as it did with the iPhone 3G/3GS. Half the time that I double-click it does not track forward but instead pauses and lowers the volume on the phone. Everything else works as it did before, I'm hoping this could be a software issue Apple can fix in the future.

I would still recommend this unit.

I read reviews here before I bought this Belkin and I ignored one of the reviews saying it did not stay in position while driving. After few days of use, it became loose and eventually knocks to the left or right while driving not to mention during turning. I had to use a masking tape to hold but not recommended. I'll never buy this product again if I need to.

    Belkin handsfree is junk

DON"T buy this -- it's junk. Main problem is the attachment to the cars cig. lighter does not keep the unit steady. Go around a corner and it flops over to the side. I used tooth picks as shims and that helped but seems like that should be an unnecessary solution to the problem.

I had the receipt and tried to return it to the apple store. They would not take it back because I did not have the box it came in.

Bottom line -- it sits in the glove compartment and will never be used again.

    TOO MUCH STATIC!!

There is too much static that comes out of the sound. It simply ruins the quality of the music. Why can't they make the signal stronger? No one can hear the speakerphone so it is a useless feature. Screen went blank as well. An overall poor quality product. Don't waste your money.

Sort of works with iPhone 4

I like the gooseneck. It's very sturdy and will securely hold your iPhone. However, it has a separate cord (in addition to the line-in cord that plugs into your Auxiliary-In jack for your car's audio) that plugs into your headphone jack of your iPhone which seems redundant considering it plugs into the dock connector. It charges the phone very well.

The only gripe about using your iPhone 4 is that it won't accept one with the Bumper on.

    Echo makes calls impossible

    • Written by from Brighton

Every time I talk to somebody using my tunebase the person on the other end asks me what's wrong with my phone. I tried calling someone who was sitting in my car talking on the tunebase and noticed a really annoying echoing of my own voice, combined with fairly average sound quality of their voice. Belkin's solution to the echo is to turn the phone volume up to full, and the car stereo volume down, thus making it impossible to hear the call.
In addition to this, the arm from the 12V plug to the cradle is far too long, resulting in a lot of play/movement in the phone while driving, which is incredibly annoying/distracting.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this product to anybody. Save your money and put it towards a decent bluetooth handsfree system

Good idea but acts like a 1st prototype gone bad

    • Written by from Ontario

Getting it out of the box and putting it back in for return or exchange is more time-consuming than setting it up. With my iphone's volume already on max, I had to turn up my car stereo's volume to listen to the music but just as I get the right volume I want, there's a crackling sound or interference noise in the background.
As for the phone features, the music does stop when you receive a phone call. Now perhaps the unit I purchased was defective but I could not hear the caller like I'm supposed to. It seemed like it wasn't connected at all. Ok, I figured I can probably get an exchange and try another unit that's not defective but then I realized that that phone/speaker feature is only for receiving phone calls. YOU CAN'T MAKE CALLS in this unit.
On top of that, I read all the reviews here and I regret not reading these before buying it.
I will be returning it TODAY.

    Loose 12v Outlets??

    • Written by from Lindsay

2 of 2 people found this useful

To everyone that is complaining about it flopping around when you turn corners, you should check to see if it is actually the 12v socket that is moving.

I have used this in 2 different cars (2007 Subaru Impreza & 2010 Nissan Rogue). It barely moved in the Impreza, but my Rogue's outlet isn't secured as well and the whole socket actually rotates about 15-20 degrees when I turn. The service guys at the dealership said that they can't do anything about it, although I might try superglue!

I really like the product otherwise, but all the movement has worn out the rubber ring on the tip which is supposed to stop it from moving, so it's getting worse and worse now.

Really interesting design, but I think it needs a secondary means to support it because not all 12v outlets are created equal.

    Doesn't like the iPhone 4

    • Written by from Spring

I picked one of these up yesterday since I've been looking for a decent solution to secure my iPhone in my truck and listen to music/answer calls without messing with cables.

It's the most stable dock I've found so far, it doesn't tip over around corners and it's easy to take out/put in. Music plays fine, not surprising since it's a direct connection.

The problem I have is with the actual Handsfree portion which is the main selling point. Its a great idea in theory, but it lacks execution.

The caller hears a lot of feedback, and unless you are yelling, you're not going to be heard. Listening to a caller is painful, there is a lot of feedback and static over the feedback.

Overall, if you want a direct connection solution without having an iPod adapter for your radio with a dock, this works well, but pricey. You'll still want to have a BT headset or just don't even bother answering calls.

    Poor Quality!

I bought this Belkin TuneBase for my new iphone 3GS, just as a cradle to hold the phone, as I didn't need the rest. Have the microsoft sync in my car, which does every thing else I need. It falls over every time I turn my car, even with the additional adaptor for the cigarette lighter. IT DOES NOT WORK. The plastic holder is very poorly made. My husband has had to adjust it for me so many times. It is just not stable. Fortunately, I'm able to mount my iphone with the cover on, so I have not scratched my iphone, but the cover is already badly scratched, with having to adjust it all the time. I would not recommend it to anyone!

GREAT IDEA BUT JUST DOES WORK IN PRACTICE

I wish I'd read the previous reviews before I purchased this product.
To some extent the success of its installation depends upon the position of the 12v socket in the vehicle, despite the flexibility built into the design by the manufacturer, I couldn't get a fit that didn't interfere, in some way, with other switch gear. Not only that, but the necessary tight fit into the 12v socket to prevent it swivelling about meant that removal was extremely difficult, even infrequently. In fairness build quality, simplicity of set-up, provision of instructions etc is well above average.
There must be a fault with the unit I purchased as the 3.5mm socket only outputs sound to the left speaker channel unless you twist it about, once you get sound into both L & R speakers then in my view the sound was good.
The unit seems to charge my iphone 4 only intermitently.
The major failing is with mic for making calls, despite a number of test, the callers couldn't hear a word I was saying, that said I could hear them clearly, but what use is a one sided conversation!
I intend to return my unit, I'm disappointed as it seemed on face value to offer a solution to a number of problems associated with using my iphone for calls and music in my car.

I use it daily with no issues

    • Written by from Severn

I've had this for 6 months and only came on this site to see if the iphone 4 was compatible and was amazed at all the negative reviews.

I think the one reviewer said it best that it depends on the vehicle - I have a Pontiac G6 and have successfully used it for 6 months. This is the TuneBase Direct (the FM transmitter one is a different product so I can't comment on the transmitting part).

I listen to Podcasts and the iPod all the time on my 30 minute commute, I don't even charge the phone at home anymore since I plug the phone into the Tunebase and it charges during the commute. I find the cradle works well and you don't have to adjust it, changing to landscape is a breeze. Plugging the headphone jack in each time is no more bothersome than inserting headphones so I have no issue with it.

I use a bluetooth headset for calls since I don't want the distraction of reaching over to touch the TuneBase (I also buy stereo controls on the steering wheel in all my cars). The iphone mutes the ipod when a call comes in so it works great.

For all those that complained about the unit turning, I experienced the same when I just pushed the unit in, but if you use the additional ring and take the time to see which 'finger' is needed on the ring you get a really nice tight fit -- and mine never moves now (Pontiac G6)

The only reason I didn't give it five stars is:
    1) The cheap jack cable, they could have spent a few more pennies on a little heavier duty. I replaced mine about 3 months in just because it felt cheap - didn't notice any difference in sound quality though.
    2) The aux out and extra USB port is on the bottom, you need a 90 degree cable to make these work in my car -- Tunebase came with the aux out (see comment above) and I found a good USB cable that works to provide power to my other devices in the car.

Glad to see the iphone 4 is compatible, at least the website states. Once I get the new iPhone I'll confirm - but I'm not standing in line so it may be a few weeks.

    Caught fire

I don't recommend this product. Apparently my model F8Z222 was recalled April '09. Best Buy Canada did not remove these from the shelves as I bought mine November '09.
The first one I had was defective (in jack on the bottom was pushed in). The second one I had was the one that caught fire. Lucky I caught it as I was leaving my car or I would have lost the whole vehicle. In the process of going through Belkin, Insurance, Car company and Best Buy... what a pain ! I don't recommend this product at all. Quality was ok at first but degraded over time, that and my car caught fire.

Make sure you need all the functions

    • Written by from London

I needed something that would both charge my iPhone while driving and plug directly into my car audio system. I wanted to avoid having to buy two separate products but this may have been a mistake.

My car has built-in bluetooth phone integration so I didn't need the phone interface but you can't switch it off, which is a pity on a device with this cost. As a result my iPhone got so confused that it froze completely and had to be restored, leaving me on a long trip with no phone or music. You could, I suppose, switch off the sync between the car and the iPhone, but this defeats the purpose of a very superior feature on the car!

The charger function is also very slow, so that my iPhone wasn't charged up even after three hours, which was disappointing.

Designwise, it's very neat and the iPhone's protective cover doesn't need to be removed when you put it in the holder, but the plug itself has a plastic flange around it, presumably designed to stop movement in the socket as you got over bumps but I could see this breaking or weakening very quickly after repeated unplugging. (I don't want to keep the device plugged in permanently as this is inviting an opportunist break in.)

So, to sum up, the product is potentially great, but it would have been nice to have had a warning not to use with a car enabled with bluetooth phone integration.
