The magnet of the leather cover is not stable, especially when it is folded to be used as a stand support.. I had my iPad 2 on the table watching a YouTube clip, suddenly the iPad was detached from the cover, flipped over, slid on the table, fell on the floor and the screen broke.
God only knows how much it will cost me to replace the iPad screen!!!!!

I love his smat cover. It is amazing how people complain over nothing. THERE ISN'T A BETTER FIT OR DESIGN FOR THE IPAD THAN THIS COVER. Shame on ALL complainers. You should be thankful instead for trying to find something wrong. This is a wonderful product.

I have had this cover on my ipad since the day I bought it - release date- and have had no problems at all with it. It holds nicely, although I never expected it to be a handle and have never used it as such. It's sleek and light, functions well as a stand and has never demagnetized nor disconnected from my ipad. I have the red one and would certainly make the same decision to buy it again. I like the organic feeling of the leather and to me the cost difference over the polyurethane (plastic) covers was worth it.

    Great minimalist cover!

This cover was given to me as a gift and I've been using it a little less than 3 months.
I replaced a damaged, plastic smart cover with the red leather smart cover and of course they both work just the same.
I wasn't expecting the inside of the cover to be leather as well! Very nice surprise!
Amazing quality, it has the same feel and smell as my most expensive (excessive) leather jackets and car seats. I'm very happy with the smart cover.
Addressing previous concerns about the hinges scratching/marking the iPad casing, I found that almost all the marks left by the smart covers I've owned are from the rubber protectors and wipe off. However, a smart cover with even a slightly damaged hinge, seems to allow the metal parts of the hinge to rub on the iPod casing which eventually leave a faint permanent mark. Simply put, if you're heavy handed with your smart cover hinge and even slightly bend/damage it, it MAY leave permanent mark on your iPad.
As for the red not being red enough, well I'm happy with how "red" mine is. It may not be the brightest red of the PRODUCT (RED) products. When I first opened it however, I did spray the inside with scotch guard and the outside with leather protector and waterproofer. It gets dirty, but just wipes clean.
Awesome cover especially when combined with a rear 'skin' cover.

    Not smart enough

At first I was very excited about a cover that would put my iPad to sleep every time I closed it, but after using it for a couple of days I began to realize that the cover was more trouble than it was worth. For instance: almost every time I rolled up the cover to set it on the table, the magnets on the cover would detach from the iPad causing the iPad to fall down on the table or even to the floor. The pros of this cover do not out weigh its cons.

Be careful with this cover easy to drop iPad

A beautiful looking cover and the send to sleep function and stand function works perfectly.
However when using the iPad as a camera the temptation is to hold case in your left hand and use your right thumb to fire the camera. At some stage you might just let go with your right hand causing all the weight to be held by the folded cover which is held on magnetically. This results in the iPad falling to the ground.
This happened to me but amazingly the ipad fell on a corner and then rolled onto its back causing no damage apart from some scraches. Had it landed on its face I might not have been so lucky. BE CAREFUL.

    iPad smartcover

I AM SHOCKED at the stupidity of some people who think that the smart cover for the iPad 2 / new can be used like a handle! Come on people.... its held on with a think magnet. Its not meant to be a handle. I have tried other covers / cases, and they just don't work as well as the Apple smart cover. For screen protection, and the auto on off feature, this smart cover is the best bet. To keep my iPad a slim and trim as it was DESIGNED to be, I use the Zagg invisishield on the back, and a Splash Masque screen protector (came as a 3 pack). I have 3 iPads set up this way, and no complaints from any of them. The magnets on the cover get stronger the more you use them.... (in case some people find them a bit weak to start). Just remember, the cover is not a handle, or they would have called it a Smart Handle....

Here is what I don't get..... people who will buy the iPad TABLET, then buy some big honking case with a keyboard, and try to turn it into a NOTEBOOK! Come on! Apple has the Macbook AIR for that....

    Inside out

I initially thought the cover was a good idea but on further use I found that it came off alot easier than I would wish. The cover rolls up, the outer cover is on the inside of the roll while the interior of the cover which is suposed to be protecting the screen is exposed to grit and stuff as the stand. I will have to consider another option shortly.

    Awful- recall them all!

The case is awful, and Ive only had it for a month or so. The magnetic stick on looses its stick on after a couple weeks. The sides of the case shreds easily. And it does not protect you iPad at all (looks only)! If you try to make it sit up it will fall and crash your iPad to the ground. This case made it so it cracked the shell of my iPad very badly and would cost a lot to repare it. Happily I bought a totally different case on eBay. Don't settle for this dumb cover. REFUND!

It is made of very poor leather. it leaves stripe marks on the face of my new iPad and the leather is so weak, it doesn't stay in position when folded to raise the iPad for better viewing.

Not what I expect from Apple! Their quality control is usually much better.

So yesterday I've bought a brand new Red Smart Cover. Later that day i've got a small black spot in the center of the cover. So, after reading a lot of advices, took wet cloth and wiped a little bit. What do you know - now I have a BIG BLACK SPOT!!! This leather quality really awful. You just cannot clean off the real stain! Even using special leather cleaning sprays... That's a pity i've spent 88 bucks here in China and got this poor quality case...

Nice Red : $69+$29 (back case)

OK, this is purely impractical good looks and makes me feel better kind of purchase because part of the cost goes to Product RED, which was founded in 2006 by U2 frontman and activist Bono and Bobby Shriver of ONE/DATA to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.

    1. Yes, magnetic cover is not a glued cover, so if you hold onto the cover and dangle the iPad, IT WILL disconnect : common 2 yr old stunts that work 100% of the time.

    2. Get an Incipio back cover that has a spine protector to incorporate the spine of this cover into a one-unite case/cover combo, no more stunts for the kids =(

    3. Yes, it will translate into unusually high amount of money spent on an iPad cover/case because you pay for the intrinsic values on being a philanthropic minimalist who happens to love the color red and paying for the goodwill of the brand Product RED.

    Limited protection, leaks colour

    • Written by from Bromsgrove

Clearly this item only covers the screen, so for back protection you'll need a smart cover compatible skin/cover at extra cost.

I knew this when buying, but I still found the item attractive as I liked the 'cover that turns to stand' idea and that it fires up the iPad when opened. The magnet is really strong and the design there is excellent - I can pick up the iPad by the cover without it disconnecting and the connection area shows no marks after a lot of use.

The downsides - the red leather has leaked colour into the clear case I got to protect the back, which now looks a mess. Also, the angle when near vertical isn't that great, and it does leave four lines where the fold hinges come in contact with the screen that I find I have to wipe off regularly.

I suspect the colour leakage is due to the leather (as opposed to the synthetic alternatives) but on a white iPad with a white or clear case the red smudges really don't look great. I'm just glad I've got the additional back cover because I'd be pretty angry if it dyed my iPad red.

If I was to buy again I would get another smart cover but I'd stick with a synthetic one and save some money. It's just a shame you can only get a red one in leather.

    It's dangerous

    • Written by from PORTLAND

It's lovely - but it doesn't attach strongly enough - so as a result, while using the iPad as a camera and with the cover folded back around I dropped my new iPad. It must be a tough machine because it seems OK but I think it's a dangerous product. The description of the cover says
" If you prefer to hold iPad, the Smart Cover flips back and out of the way like a page in a magazine. And if you want to shoot some HD video on the fly, the Smart Cover folds in half to expose the back-facing camera. Now that’s something to smile about."

I think if my iPad was damaged I'd hold Apple responsible. I was using it as intended and the magnets are not strong enough to hold the weight of the iPad.

In fact I prefer the Kindle cover - it attaches positively, it won't come off. I'd rate it zero if the review panel let me.

I love it because I expected it to do exactly what I knew it does. It is a front screen cover for the iPad. It isn't meant to protect the back. That's why it's just perfect with a hard case for the back. It's stylish and functional with the way it folds to become a stand. Looks wonderful in red. And besides you've got to know that being leather it changes with time. So far it hasn't left a mark on my iPad like some users said it would. And as for the inner part, it is kind of absorbent, but the thing is, just don't place it on top of a dirty and greasy table top.

The cover surpassed my expectations from the moment it connected by itself to my iPad. It's easy to keep clean, for me at least. You can even use leather cleaner on it if you desire. The stand function of it is perfect and practical. I wouldn't be without it now. It compliments the iPads sleek slim lines so well that, once again, I say 'Apple thought of everything'

Ok this is not a protective case it's a protective cover for the screen.
If you want to kick your IPad around buy an Otterbox
It is built for minimalist who do not want to add a bulky plastic case
My second one and I love the product
