I want to use a MacBook as a music library. Which model would work best? How can I get high quality digital audio to my analog home stereo preamp?

Any MacBook will work for music playback. Just buy the one you like.
For high quality sound output, there are many options. Something like an Apogee Duet 2 would provide uncompromised sound quality.
You may also want to consider an Airport Express Base Station from Apple, which includes an audio output so that you can play music wirelessly from the MacBook. (They call it AirTunes). It features an optical output, so you have the option of using a high-quality converter as well.- Answered by John E from Albuquerque

You shouldn't use it as a music library. But, if you want to, and you only want to listen to music, I would get the MacBook Air 11" because it has the smallest screen. But, I can't answer your second question because I'm not very good at playing music, and I don't really listen to music.
