    Falling apart already

I've had this cover along with my iPad2 since they both came out in March (a birthday present from my now fiancé) and it's already wearing out at the edges and seams, especially the edge attached to the hinge. It'll completely fall off soon. I use it every day but I don't mistreat it or anything so it should've been more durable than this. Also it never really cleaned the screen like I was told it should, it just leaves stripes in the fingerprint smudges where the pads and hinges alternate. Still using it until it completely falls apart I guess, since it still puts the iPad to sleep. Fiancé is also disappointed that it's falling apart. I plan to get a nice case that has the magnets in it from an Etsy shop when I can afford it. I'm sure that'll last must longer plus look cool, and it'll cost less even though it's handmade.

    PERFECT DESIGN FOR A COVER

I keep reading reviews from folks who have purchased the cover, apparently without doing their homework. The cover is NOT an all protective case, nor was it intended as such. It is a remarkably designed multi function product that is intended to protect the face/screen only.

I have the black leather version purchased with my iPad 3. It fits like a glove, magnetically atttaches very solidly. It is segmented in a manner that allows it to remain attached and act as a screen tilt or vertical holder, in either landscape or portrait position. I use it to wrap around the back of my iPad and act as a scuff deterrent. However, I have found the back doesn't scuff, anyway, it may be just me, but who cares if it has a minor scuff or scratch?

The cover is very thin, compared to the others I researched. It is so thin, I actually slip it into an insert originally designed to slip in papers and documents in my leather note pad. The note pad closes completely and it is not apparent it contains my iPad. Remarkable! With the iPad and cover inserted, it remains only 5/8"-3/4" TOTAL thickness. People are astounded when I open my leather note pad and produce an iPad 3!

Bottom line: yes, it's not cheap, it's a screen cover/protector (not a case), works EXACTLY as intended and is very sleek and professional. Well worth the price!

I shopped for over an hour and examined everything offered. My conclusion was simply, Why would you purchase an iPad 3 and wrap a case around it that renders it capable of battlefield use and leaves you with a bulky, gawdy tool that is as cumbersome as a laptop? HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

I own both the black and the product red leather smart covers and am very pleased with both. I can't understand the negative reviews particularly the ones about no back cover. I gather these reviewers didn't read the product description otherwise they would have known there was no back cover. You mark the cover down for that? Read, people, read! Excellent hard shell back covers are offered all over Amazon and even go so far as to match Apple's smart cover. Can you imagine that? Yes, I will agree the price could be lower but I feel it's worth it to protect my EXPENSIVE investment from scratches. If you choose a minimalistic look to keep the look of the iPad, you are going to sacrifice total protection. Only you can choose what's right for you. I love the leather smart covers and have paired them with many back covers. Nice option, highly recommend as long as you understand and read what you are buying.

    Bit expensive

The design of the cover is great, it works perfectly, allowing you to set it into many different positions depending on what you're working on and I do also like how it takes you straight to the Home Screen. However it is a bit expensive for what it does, I know it's leather, but I'm sure Apple can afford to sell something like this at a cheaper price.

But for the person that rated one star because it broke the iPad when they picked it up... You can easily tell that the magnet isn't exactly a strong one, so it's not surprising that it can't handle the weight of the iPad if left dangling from two tiny magnets.

Don't buy a smart cover till you've read this

I purchased an Ipad3 from my local Apple store and at the same time a leather smart case that attaches to the iPad via magnets. All was fine until I tried to take a photograph with my new iPad. I held the pad by 2 hands one around the folded cover and one on the other side of the pad frame. I took my hand off the frame to press the photo off and the pad fell out of the cover and smashed on the tile floor. The magnets are not strong enough and can give up the grip to easily. Sold by Apple at an inflated price for what you get those covers are NOT fit for purpose. The iPad still works but it landed on the corner and the frame shattered,

Doesn't stay attached on my 3rd gen iPad

I purchased a black leather smart cover for my iPad 2 and loved it. My wife is still using it today on the same iPad over a year later. I purchased a new one with my new 3rd gen iPad and it won't stay attached at the hinge section. The magnetic attraction seems to be much weaker and it falls off way to easy. It's caused me to drop my iPad a couple of times, thankfully only to my lap! I'm now looking for an lternative.

Nice, but so not worth the price.

After having the Polyurethane cove for more than a year, I wanted to get a new one and thought the leather looked better.
Well I do like the the look and feel of the leather, its performance is a let down.
When I fold it up to make a stand so I can watch video's, the cover slips a little so the iPad is leaning back. Not falling over, but leaning back enough that at times I need to prop it against something.
I found it did not stick to the screen as nice as the Polyurethane one, not sure if I have a bad set of magnets or something with the cover itself.
Save some money, get the Polyurethane cover instead. The leather looks nice, but in the end so not worth the extra money.

    Not impressed

I received this iPad smart cover for Christmas. I was very excited, but to my disappointment it only came with a cover. I thought for the price that it is 45 dollars and tax, it would of at least come with a screen protector. It never even came with a back, that was separate, so that was another 25 dollars. Definitely a waste of money, if it came with a screen protector or a back it would of been worth it.

    MUCH BETTER THAN POLY

    • Written by from Sacramento

I had the poly grey for about a week and half and had to change to leather, once I put black leather on the ipad, it felt again like an ipad. The poly was cheep feeling, and felt like something that belonged on a toy, even though the leather may degrade over time, the poly felt like it wouldnt last long either, if not shorter time. Deff worth the quality and appeal the leather has. I also felt the hinge was better on the leather, it might just be in my head. very happy, now.

    No Good for (new) iPad

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I have the dark grey polyurethane cover and really liked it. I purchased this cover when I got the (new) iPad. I, like other people below, have had problems with the cover easily detaching from the (new) iPad. This never happened (or happens) with the iPad 2. While the case "works" for new generation iPads, I would not recommend it, as I find myself constantly shuffling to reattached the cover. It seems like that extra millimeter of thickness with the new generation might actually prevent the cover from securely attaching to the device.

Perfect execution of what is sets out to be

After 9 months of daily use, this remains a very durable, very soft leather screen cover that has held up perfectly. The black leather shows no smudges or spots from your hand and has that nice patina that only leather has with time. If you are looking for a case, look elsewhere. This is a screen cover/protector that mantains the clean lines of the iPad 2, while offering the functionality that the Apple site details better than my description could. Well executed; top quality.
    Love it!

    Apart at the Seams

After several months, the pad began to come apart at the corner seams. Soon after, the seam at the magnetic bar started to come undone misaligning the magnets, then finally came off. I returned it to the store, but they would not accept it and said that this was normal wear and tear. I have no intention of putting out $70.00 every four months for something that is of such poor quality. Apple must be aware of the lack of quality in this product since they refuse to accept returns after such a short period and consider such a condition to be "normal".

    Nice light duty cover

    • Written by from Sand Springs

I ordered the black leather Smart Cover when I ordered my New (3rd Gen) iPad. Looking at the design and knowing the environment I would be taking my iPad into when I went to work in the field (tree service), I thought better of using the Smart Cover as a means of protection and ordered an Otterbox Defender case.

I used the Smart Cover for two days while waiting for my Defender case to be delivered and even brought it out in the field with me (being very careful with my iPad). If you are thinking this is going to offer solid protection for your iPad then think again because it is not going to protect it in a rough environment. That is not what the Smart Cover is designed to do.

I stowed the Smart Cover in my closet thinking that I would never use the thing and cursed myself for wasting money on it. However, I grew tired of using my iPad in the bulky Defender case while working in my office and around the house. I really enjoy the feel and aesthetics of the iPad naked, without the bulky case so I began taking it out of the case on days when I work in the office and when I am at home. I dug out the Smart cover and began using it again on days when I can use my iPad in the office and at home. The Cover is awesome for light duty, indoor protection. It compliments the iPad with stylish good looks and turns the screen on and off without having to use the slider.

For what it was designed for, it is a very nice cover. You just have to have the common sense to know what level of protection you need for your iPad and choose accordingly. I would definitely recommend it for times when you do not want to use your iPad with a bulky case and want to enjoy the lightweight feel of the stand alone iPad. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is I believe it is overpriced.

This screen protector works pretty well. I've had mine since the IPad 2 first came out with no disappointments. I've ordered another for the New IPad.

Apples description-overview does specify "screen protection" but perhaps could suggest better options for users needing more protection. This covers the screen only, thus the back of your IPad is not protected. The magnetic hinge is adequate for careful/light use, but will come off if bumped. (Murphy's Law definitely applies here)

If you do a lot of traveling, have kids, or use outside your home or office environment, this cover may not offer enough protection.

    Not fit for purpose

I am experiencing the same issues as many of the other reviews have outlined. After 6 months of normal use the cover is falling apart. The leather is coming away from the cardboard base and becoming torn at the hinges. This build quality is unacceptable at the price point of £56 and therefore should be thought of as not fit for purpose.

I bought this cover with my iPad 2 and used it for 7 months. I had to switch to a different cover, because the cover was gradually sliced by the iPad where it attaches with the magnets. The cut kept getting longer and longer. This caused the cover to shift all over the place when I was carrying the covered iPad in my computer case. More often than not the cover would shift causing the iPad to wake out of sleep mode without me knowing it. It was maddening to place and charged iPad in my computer case and later pull out the iPad and find that it had a 20% charge. I would never buy this kind of cover again.

I replaced it with a high quality leather case. We will see if this stands the test of time.

I have had this cover since launch, and frankly, it does not get used all that much. I am one f those people who baby their tech toys.

However, this thing is already falling apart. The material around the magnet clasp's hinge is coming apart and pretty soon the leather cover will come right off the magnet hinge anchor.

Now, this thing isn't cheap, which makes this even more unacceptable. I would ask for a replacement, but I am sure I would just be told were to go. No more apple accessories for me :-(

Having owned the poly cover I was less than impressed with its longevity, so I bit the bullet and apple scored another sale but have to say DO NOT waste money buy this leather cover, much better looking in the flesh, slightly thinner, more plyable, just better. Expensive yes, eye wateringly, but still much better than the poly one. You have been warned

Best decision to buy this THE DAY I bought my iPad

    • Written by from Richmond

Looked at the other covers in the shop- the poly ones had wear marks on them and pulls in the fabric but the leather ones just looked like they'd been used- not worn. I got this on the day I bought my iPad- best decision as its had cover since day one. It's worn well in 5 months and I've had no issues with it- it doesn't fall off, fits with the plastic cover I have for the back- and folds where it's supposed to when it's supposed to. The only downside I think, is the marks it makes on the iPad glass itself- which is easily wiped off with a microfiber (or a sleeve!). I'd rather pay a bit extra for a decent product than pay twice- once for the cheap version and once for the proper one!

I don't like this at all - I assumed that the old adage " Mother knows best" applied here - seeing that Apple was making this, they must know what is the best cover for your "precious baby". Boy was i wrong - it seems like "mother" in this case turned out to be a "drugged up junkie". Who in the world, knowing how valuable your IPAD is, will design such a flimsy, non protective case ...then charge 70 bucks for it ??? The case DO NOT protect my precious from the most dangerous things out there - a fall or scratches to the back. I had to shell out additional money for a back case and a sleeve for safe carrying purposes. Rest assured, if you want to protect your 600.00 toy - you will have to log off Apple and Log on Amazon and buy a few pieces of protection. Just a friendly warning. By the way .. I returned the item forthwith !!!!
