Just installed mine today. It replaced a two year old 2nd generation time capsule. Set up was a breeze. The initial backup is a bit slow, but I am backing up over 521 gigs. Signal strength appears to be better.

A year or so ago I gave the Time Capsule one star because I had a really hard time setting it up for the first three months I had it. I was on the phone with Apple Care people roughly four times to get it all figured out.

Apple must have changed around the software somewhere because it's way easier to set up now. For about the last year it hasn't given me any troubles, even if the power goes out.

time capsule with snow leapard is great, upgrade to lion and nothing works

I upgraded to Lion and now trying to restore photos from time machine is impossible, with snow leopard opening time machine from within I photo retained the history of I photo galleries back in time so that restoring selected images from galleries was easy, with lion it is not possible to view I photo on backup disk. After 1.5 hours on the phone to apple support they agreed it was a mess.Only way was to copy whole of 384 gb of old library across to my I mac,(estimated 18hours!)pick out the 20 or so photos I wanted then trash the transferred library.great idea, now re installing Snow Leopard.

    Extremely satisfied again!

July of 2011 I replaced my original 1TB Time Capsule with this 3TB model as I needed more storage. (I never had issues with the first one by the way.) Contrary to some users mine has not run hot, it's always been slightly warm.

It's connected via ethernet to a U-verse router (of which I've disabled its wireless), and use only the Time Capsule's wireless for managing an iMac, Macbook Air, two iPads, two iPhones, an Apple TV, two Airport Express units for audio, another Airport enabled powered speaker system, and three other TV products. I can honestly say I don't experience any drop outs or connection issues.

It backs up the iMac and Macbook Air perfectly, and I can't say enough about how flawless the backups work in their timeframe slices, that execution is just excellent and easy to use.

If something unfortunate should happen to it I'd replace it in a jiffy without hesitating. It's been a great product for me twice now.

    3TB Time Capsule upgrade

I've owned a 500MB Time Capsule for a few years and it has performed very well. There was an early problem with the power supply but Apple replaced Time Capsule free of charge. I was not on Apple Care with it at the time, btw.

I imported a bunch of family videos and bought iTunes TV shows and realized it was time for an upgrade. I bought the 3TB Time Capsule this weekend. Setup was very familiar and easy for me. Running the first backup of 480GBs took about 6 hours over gigabit ethernet. I don't notice any excessive heat. I am also very impressed with wifi performance.

    Great idea - poor execution

Really needed a 3Tb server to free up the MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs we have. First unit shipped lasted twenty-four hours before dropping off the network for no apparent reason. Power cycling is the only option and this did not last. Reset entire device - no dice. Sent back (after a lot of telephone wrangling) got a replacement - guess what - doing EXACTLY the same thing. These are too unreliable - especially if you rely on them for your critical backups.

    Time Capsule 3T

I have not been completely satisfied. I have had to have my Time Capsule "repaired" twice at the Genius Bar when it simply quit working. In both cases 10 days passed before I was alerted that there had been no downloads in so many days. I fear that I must say this product is unreliable. For the price, one expects far more. I would not recommend. There are other products far less expensive that do the job.

Read up on it before you buy - It does what it says on the tin!

This is a back up device for your MAC first and foremost, it is NOT a storage device unless you connect an external hard drive to the USB port. If you connect a powered USB hub you can connect multiple drives that solves the storage issue, you can also point additional Time Machine back ups to these hard drives if you have more than one MAC. Its an excellent WI-FI router, ours has an Air Port to extend range over a large house, works without fault. Have had to use a Time Machine back up when a hard drive failed in one of our iMacs worked without fault, but slow. Love mine. Don't understand the issues with it.

    Constantly loosing Connection

Bought a Time Capsule 3TB this winter,
plugged a external USB-Harddrive and did set it up.

And from that point, it only got worse. I almost reset the Time Capsule twice a day, because both my MacBook Pros and my iMac suddenly loose connection.

Strange thing is, the internet still works. Only the Time Machine is can't be found (which is great for a backup system) and the plugged in USB-Harddrive.

I've payed 500 bucks for resetting an Apple-product twice a Day...

    Continuously have to reset

    • Written by from Memphis

I can't count how many times the wireless Internet quits and I have to hit the reset button on the back. This is the only problem I have with this time capsule. I'd rate it 5 stars but the wifi stops working all the time! I tried to return the thing but apple said it was out of the return range. I'm an apple fanatic don't get me wrong but I'm in the process of switching back to a regular wireless router and USB external hard drive for back up and storing files.

This fourth generation time capsule is this best by far. Very simple and easy to used. Not only an external hard drive but also a airport extreme base station. Download 250 GB wirelessly over night with plenty of storage left on it massive 3TB hard drive. Like every apple product, it is very slick, elegant, and pleasing to the eyes. Hope apple will continue to make great products that are above the rest. Please do not let Steve Jobs down.

    Runs VERY HOT

    • Written by from CALGARY

Beware that you cannot stack anything under or ontop ofthis unit as it runs incredibly HOT. I had my Mac Mini under the Tme Capsule and the mini started having problems due to the heat generated by the TimeCapsule. They were both sitting out in the open on a desk - good air flow all around. No fan for cooling the TimeCapsule means it is quiet but can cook eggs on top.

The device is as good as a mid-range wireless base station. Having the built-in Time Machine backup drive is the big deal, though. Highly recommended for Macbooks/iMacs to have a wireless backup source.

Converted to all Apple from 0 Apple in summer 2011. Have been very impressed with the Time Capluse. First, it interfaces and makes all the Apple features work on the devices connected to it (pads, phones, TV, Mini, Air's). I love the auto backups via Time Machine from the three machines in the house. I just established a periodic off-site backup protocol and Apple JV helped me configure the Airport Utility to back up the entire Capsule to external Hitichi G drive which I will take to the office in case of disaster @ home. One thing the engineers need to do though is make it possible to encrypt the backup drive for added security of offsite drives.

Very Poor Internet Performance - Don't buy

I have been using an Airport Extreme which worked flawlessly for the past 2+ years. Got the 3 TB Time Capsule and have had nothing but problems with Internet connection speed. Slows down every couple of days. Contacted Apple twice. No help first time. Second person had me completely enter my info in by hand. 2 days later back to intermittent slow internet speeds. Speeds fine directly connected to Internet Modem. Nothing has changed except I replaced my Airport Extreme with the 3 TB Time Capsule. Very disappointed in this product.

Extremely disappointed at the reliability of this device. It worked fine for a little over a year and then died. External power supply is not the problem. It is the internal power converter that is dead. The device will not power own, even when I use an external power supply from a known good device.

    Great NAS

I've used this for 3 months now. I dont use it as a primary backup device. It serves its purpose as a NAS for streaming & backing up music... & occasionally for movies. It is very good even for movies, with no buffering issues. I have around 1tb left & use it sparingly for my Lightroom library.

I'm on my second time capsule (I wanted more storage). It is literally a "set it and forget it machine". This newer generation is much more reliable than the earlier models, although I did not have much trouble with that one either.

Wish I could spring for a 3TB model!

    Amazing Product!

I was very skeptical about this product after reading a lot of the reviews on this website. I was afraid that I would have trouble getting things set up, and even if I had no trouble at all, I worried that the machine would simply stop working at some point.

I have to say that Apple has made set up using the Airport Utility so simple. This was the easiest wireless network I have ever set up and the signal strength is fantastic!. Furthermore, using the Time Capsule to back up my mac was seamless, though it did take quite a while the first time.

As for the crashing issues, I can't speak to that now because my product is fairly new, but so far this has been an amazing investment. Worth the money for sure.
