    Good design improvements

    • Written by from Houston

I just purchased a new black Bumper to replace the one I originally purchased with my iPhone 4 upon initial release and notice that Apple seems to have made some design improvements to the bumper at some point in the past year. The new bumper has a slightly different shape to the rubber portions--an angle from the face of the case to where the rubber meets the face of the iPhone (rather than the former continuous curve). This change appears to result is a more robust rubber piece that should wear well. Also, the cut-out for the docking port has been enlarged compared to the original Bumper. While I enjoyed the original Bumper--and haven't found a case I like better--this new one feels more durable.

    rips apart

    • Written by from simi valley

It works well while it lasts. The opening for docking isn't compatible with any older cords (even apple brand accessories) for charging, which means I have to take the bumper off to use my car charger, or sync with my iMac (only the new skinny wall adapter fits into this bumper). As a result, after only a couple of months the bumper began ripping apart at the edges and eventually just totally disintegrated. Not worth $30, but the best option i've seen so far.

LOVE THE BUMPER - ignore negative reviews

    • Written by from Oceanside

I never write reviews but i thought i would chime in about this one.

Obviously this case doesn't protect the back ... if you buy this and then complain about this feature you are an idiot.

Things i love about the bumper:
    1. minimalistic
    2. rubber edges - phone wont slide around. Especially useful in the car or on a smooth surface
    3. iPhone will ever touch the surface because both sides and all edges are raised
    4. buttons are classy and not recessed like other cases
    4. fits perfectly

    Things i dont like:
    1. Expensive - If this were $10 like it should be, you could buy a few colors
    2. Recessed vibrate switch is hard to get to

Comparisons to other cases i have:
Incase slider - Scratches the glass when you slide on and off. Lint gathers around edges. Bulky.
Incase snap - Piece of garbage. Will crack and hardly protects anything. Save your money.

Overall i think this is the best case you can buy. Sure, its not going to protect your phone if you drop it while bear hunting in the forest; however, for everyday use it doesnt get any better.

    Find another case..

    • Written by from Murrieta

At first, the bumper is great. It does protect the phone as it provides a nice cushion along the edges. However, it starts to fall apart very quickly. I've already gone through two, and I am very gentle with my belongings. The edges thin and start to tear away quickly just from everyday use. I would recommend getting another cover, as this one just doesn't do the job for very long.

This bumper has saved my phone from damage by accidental drops. The bumper protects the phone well. It goes on and comes off easy. Worth the money!!

    Stretches out very easily

    • Written by from Washington

I've gone through two of these, thinking the first one was defective, but they stretch out and become loose very easily. Look for something more durable.

    Scratches the metal rim

    • Written by from Toronto

all corners and sides of my phone are scratched thanks to this bumper. I would've been better off buying a case-mate barely there than an apple product that does protect from low falls but at the end still leaves scratches and marks on the phone.

    Not bad.

    • Written by from Lowestoft

Was very pleased when I received this for nothing as part of the free case program. But as the months have passed the rubber from the bottom has come apart on both sides as a result of taking the case off and putting it back on. I've also had to carve out a larger hole around the headphone socket as some jacks cannot fit into it properly. The plastic has also become scratched, but this is to be expected.
Aside from this it has done a great job in protecting my phone.

    Marks the metal band

    • Written by from Newark

Got the bumper through the iPhone case program as because I use the phone in my left hand, the reception was affected by the 'antennagate' problem. Sadly, like others, I found that after a few months of use, the metal band was pitted and scuffed, like many others have found.

It starts off snugly fitting, but then works losse over time, which is possibly how dust is getting between the metal band and the case, causing the marks - which oddly enough, don't look like scratches.

On the plus side, it looks good. Probably £16 overpriced.

    Better in the beginning.

    • Written by from Louisville

The bumper is really cool by concept and the location of the buttons are a perfect extension from the iphone; it offers minimal protection however and is even abrasive to the aluminum located on the outer rim of the iphone itself. Initially it snugly fits onto the iphone and feel like it was "made for it", but after just a few months of typical pocket wear - you'll find that the rubber is too soft and flimsy and will fall off the frame of the bumper. I'm glad the bumper was free or I would currently be very upset.

    Good while it lasts

    • Written by from Dublin

I have used the bumper since the first day the iphone 4 came out. I like that it keeps the phone from sliding around (or out of my pocket) but doesn't hide the design or make it much larger.

Unfortunately, after less than a year of use normal, the silicone gasket is wearing through and ripping off on the bottom front (near the home button). A "case" that doesn't last as long as the phone isn't acceptable.

I really like this bumper! Except for price!

    • Written by from clovis

Other than paying $30 for it I'm on board! Gets 4/5 stars because this should realistically only cost $20 at the most.
I'm not sure why some people are having problems with this bumper though, mine works great. It fits the phone snug, the buttons work great and is very sleek. Better access to controls than my wife's SPECK case. Other cases I looked at had the following problems-to bulky (Otter), buttons hard to operate (all), must remove case to dock phone etc..
I guess maybe this case could make it difficult to fit older docks made for the first or 2nd iPhone who knows, but be reasonable people!! It works great with any current accessory for the iPhone4 or 3GS. As for it disintegrating who knows, we'll see about that but I suspect this may be more of a condition of people who take the case off and on more often in order to use older iPhone accessories. Mine shows no signs of wear or looseness and that's more than I can say for some of the other gel type cases on the market that loosen up within weeks. This bumper is great for what it is designed to do, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

    bumper

its a great case until it breaks.... ive had 2 now, both of which have broken at the bottom and it is the most annoying thing ever. i even made sure not to take me second one on and off and it still broke. so overall its a great case but breaks way to much. Apple fix that!

    How bizarre...!

    • Written by from Redhill

My experience is different to almost everybody else's it seems...

I love mine. It fits perfectly, is still intact after six months of (very) heavy use, hasn't scratched anything, and makes the iphone so much easier to handle. Maybe i just got lucky...

    Apple Bumper

    • Written by from Coulsdon

Loved the look of the bumper but started to fall apart after 9 months. Scratches the metal band really badly! Credit to Apple for giving me a new phone because of this. Would never use or buy one again, which is a shame cos i loved the look of it.

Lasted less than 6 months before it disintegrated. Replacing these twice a year could get expensive for what they cost. No Apple support!

A little pricey but worth it

    • Written by from Gilbert

I had tried a few aftermarket cases for my Verizon iPhone but wasn't really happy with any of them. I was hesitant to throw another $30 down for another case but I have to say I'm really happy I did. It feels like a really good quality product, and I especially like how the power and volume buttons are built-in. I think this actually improves the design of the phone and makes it much more comfortable in hand and prevents it from sliding around when you lay it down in the car. I've only had it for about a week so I can't speak to how well it will hold up, but I haven't seen anything to make me think it won't. Overall i"m very satisfied.

    Just what I wanted BUT...

    • Written by from Cincinnati

The iPhone Black Bumper was just what I wanted: protection around the perimeter of the phone AND keeps the phone front or back elevated when iPhone is placed on a desktop or table. BUT the headphone jack opening is too narrow to permit full insertion of standard size headphone jacks. You'll need an adapter.

Good, but not with iPod socks!

    • Written by from Theodore

These bumpers look rather cool wrapped around a white iPhone 4 as it complements the black features of the phone (the camera, sensor slit and screen), and I really like the metal volume and sleep buttons that are built into the bumper—nice attention to detail.

However, it does nothing to protect the back of the phone, and it actually reduces compatibility with USB-to-iPod Dock cables and headphones—my Sennheiser PXC-250 headphones' phono jack can no longer be plugged into the iPhone as long as the bumper is fitted (the hole for the headphones needs to be 1 mm diameter larger than it is), and while the USB-to-iPod cable that came with the phone does fit "through" the bumper, a cable that comes Apple's own Universal Dock Kit doesn't. You may need to consider these things before you purchase a bumper... and unfortunately, this may mean you have to see the bumper for yourself before you go and buy one.

A significant problem I found is that the rubber used for the black bumper is rather sticky, making it much more difficult to fit iPod socks over! The rubber is so elastic that they cause the socks to stretch unless you're careful with putting them on or taking them off. On the other hand, if you want more grip thanks to the black rubber, this black bumper is the one to go for.
