Apple iPhone 3G Dock
No cable?
Written by JH from VALRICO
Jul 16, 2008
This dock is a great idea and can be very handy for a work situation. It really irks me that I have to go find a connector cable because one is not included in the package. I want to keep the dock ready at work, and keep a dock connector in my laptop bag for syncing and charging on the go. I find it very frustrating to purchase a seperate cable to power it up. Cables aren't that expensive, one should be included for the price of this accessory.

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Not as good as the previous model
Written by RJ from Chicago
Jul 15, 2008
I like the way it looks, and how the phone fits into the dock, but I've had a huge problem with touching the phone anywhere on the top half and it becoming dislodged from the dock ever so slightly, disconnecting from the computer, and then reconnecting immediately. Its become a huge hassle especially with the new backing up before sync in iTunes. I'm not thrilled with this dock, compared with the previous version, and I will probably return it.

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Just a dock
Written by SD from DURHAM
Jul 17, 2008
Pros:
- The viewing angle of the dock looks pretty natural when used on your desk, but also on the average night stand.
- Easy to dock and undock. Fits snugly, but not too tight
- Small and easy to take to an office
Cons:
- No extra cord
- Don't ask me how, but it's easy to knock over face forward. Wouldn't have been a problem if the "base" area was a little bigger
Overal not a bad solution, but I went with a all silicone cover. No te phone doesn't fit in the dock unless you uncover the bottom part of the skin. This could have been prevented if the connector had variable height options.
Without a cover the phone would scratch so I think I will get rid of the dock and just lay it flat.1044 of 1216 people found this useful

Must Have Accessory - Why Wasn't It In The Box, Apple?
Written by FN from FRASERBURGH
Jul 14, 2008
At the weekend, I went into town to TRY and find an iPhone 3G which I wanted so much. After much trailing round the various O2 and Carphone Warehouse shops I eventually found one... Great!
So, I took it home, opened the box and started having a little rummage around and what did I find? Well... everything apart from a dock. I know how useful these docks can be, my sister owns the first generation iPhone and its serves its purpose as a great little stand for using while at the computer (it saves the back getting scratched too!)
I had to get one. So back into town I went, and (luckily) the Carphone Warehouse had them :) It's a sturdy piece of kit which is deceptively heavy (in a good way) and you won't find yourself worrying about if it is a safe place ti keep your phone.
All-in-all, a must have for iPhone owners... But it should have been included in the box!621 of 670 people found this useful

No AV out from this dock
Written by GB from CAMBRIDGE
Jul 31, 2008
Warning - I bought one of these and a new Apple Composite AV cable to dock and connect my iPhone to an in-car entertainment system for audio and video output. The cable on its own works great but the dock BLOCKS both the video and audio outputs from the 30-pin connector on the back so nothing works.
On the Apple website it does say that video output is not supported from this dock, but mentions nothing about blocking the audio from the 30-pin connector too! And neither the store staff nor the packaging told me any of this anyway.
I have no clue why Apple would not just pass through the 30-pin connection from the phone to the back of the dock, but they don't. Apparently the Universal Dock does allow AV through, but then it does block the microphone and speaker on the bottom of the iPhone so it's useless for speakerphone calls - and it will cost me another £10 for another power adapter I don't need (got one with the phone and one with the AV cable so far).
So that's £50 spent on two accessories which don't work together but are both 'compatible' with iPhone 3G, and fail to do the job a £2.99 cable from Maplin would do if Apple hadn't encyrption-protected the AV output on the iPhone.
Not great, and I speak as a long-term Apple fan.551 of 658 people found this useful

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Useful but should have been included with phone
Written by SW from BIRMINGHAM
Jul 14, 2008
It is simple and practical. If you spend large portions of your day in front of a computer then the dock makes perfect sense. When your iPhone is docked, it is still fully functional and easily viewable at a quick glance (and it will be fully charge when you need it on the go.)
Whilst I personally feel that is should have been included with the iPhone (ala first gen iPhone), I can think of worse thing to spend £19 on. Non essential but highly recommended.325 of 361 people found this useful

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Why not in the package?
Written by JT from Calgary
Oct 8, 2008
The first iPhone came with the charging cable AND this dock. Now they don't include it and that really hurts. The dock is alright, it does the job but is still overpriced for being essentially a stand for your iphone that looks neat. I've gone back to just using the cable direction because the base of the dock is not big enough to stop the iphone from falling over from time to time when you try to use the phone while it is in it's dock.

Doesn't Work with iPhone Skins
Written by NP from Hot Springs
Jun 4, 2009
This dock is fine for users who tote their iPhones around without a skin, but if you have any type of halfway decent iPhone skin on your iPhone, it will simply not work at all. In that case you will need the Apple Universal Dock for iPods and iPhones. That will allow you to connect your iPhone to your dock, skin and all. Other than that, if you have an iPhone 3G without a skin, than this dock will work fine for you. And as Apple says this won't work with the original iPhone. Another time you would need the Universal Dock.

Greed at its finest
Written by RK from San Diego
Jul 24, 2008
What a worthless piece of plastic this is. It doesn't come with the cable to hook it to your computer, so you have to spend another $19 for the cable. Oh sure, I can use the one that came with my iphone, but then I won't have an extra one at home. This is just outright greed, a cable costs 50 cents to make and they could have included it. I'm loosing all my respect for Apple.

Nice dock but bad Apple spirit...
Written by VM from akutan

Why didn't Apple just put the dock in the iPhone box? Why make people pay even more for something that should have been there?
When the third generation iPhone comes out, I bet they're not going to put anything but the phone in the box, everything else will come out seperately and will not be compatible with the previous model...
Anyways, the dock itself works, so it deserves a 5/5 rating, but Apple's little annoying methods like this to get the customers to pay even more deserve a 1/5...

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
No Plug, No Cable, No Firewire Charging, but Pretty.
Written by JB from Saint Charles
Jul 23, 2008
I bought one of these because it wouldn't fit in the original iPhone's dock. I travel a lot, and keep the iPhone's cable & plug in my suitcase, so I like to have a dock as a charger while at home. Things to keep in mind if considering buying this...
1) It does NOT come with a cable or plug, so you will need to purchase those separately.
2) I had many previous iPod models, and have been using the Firewire cable from those to run from the wall plug to the dock. (Power only, not using it to sync.) This worked great for iPhone, ver.1. iPhone 3G will NOT charge from a firewire cable!
3) Does not support the Apple Remote like the Universal Dock does, so if you connect the line-out port to the dock, you cannot use a remote.
So just a word of caution, if you use the included plug for travel and would like a separate desk/home charger you will need to purchase a separate USB iPhone cable and USB power plug. This dock does not come with them, nor does it support previous iPod/dock firewire power.125 of 137 people found this useful

Wish I'd read all the reviews first
Written by AW from BISHOP AUCKLAND

As many have said, one of these should really have been included in the box, but at £19, I guess I can live with that.
However, what I can't live with is the fact that it doesn't include the USB cable!! I bought two of these (one for home, one for work), thinking that I'd then keep the cable that came with the iPhone for travel use. But I'm now going to have to spend even more on a couple of cables for the docks!
Not good guys. I can't think of any other cradle or dock type of product that doesn't at least include its own connecting cable.
So...lose one star for not including a dock with the iPhone in the first place and lose two more for not including the cable with the dock! Bad Apple!!121 of 140 people found this useful

What's up Dock? Wheres the Cable Steve?
Written by RG from arizona city
Dec 21, 2008
I really like the looks of this dock and the way my 3G sits in it. When I bought this I didn't realize I still had to use the cable that came with my iPhone.
I had planned on using this with my iMac in the house and using the cable that came with my iPhone in my car with it's built in AC port so I wouldn't have to take the cable from house to car every time.
I would think being a desk top accessory it would have a cable hard-wired into it, especially for $29, I feel kinda let down Steve that it looks as if I still have to buy an additional $19 cable. If I had known this I would have just bought a 2nd cable instead of the dock.107 of 113 people found this useful

NO CABLE INCLUDED
Written by MG from Boulder
Aug 24, 2008
If you still want to be able to use your original cable when you're on the go (and don't want to have to keep plugging and unplugging it from this dock), then the real cost of a iPhone 3G dock is $49. ($30 for this 'stand' and $19 for a USB cable). It NEEDS to be noted on the box that no cable is included because I'm sure that many people made the same mistake I did: thinking that for the already significant price of $30, the dock would come with everything you need. I love my iPhone, but I don't love Apple cheaping out on stuff like this.

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Not worth the money
Written by CG from Puebla
Apr 11, 2009
For 29 USD, what you get is a simple dock, that is no more useful than the usb cable alone, apart from it's looks when it is in your desk (and it doesn't include an extra cable).. If the 30 pin connector would allow for video output, this would be a whole different story.. but it's not the case. For 20 USD more, you can get the universal dock, which is capable of doing video output, includes an apple remote controller and also gives you the neat looks on your desk.
A dock this simple, should be offered in the phone's package, just like the first iphone, in which it was a nice addition.. not an expensive, almost useless accessory like this one.108 of 126 people found this useful

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Maybe worth $5
Written by MB from Baton Rouge
Feb 1, 2009
I was given this, so not like it matters... But, it is pretty much pointless, because it doesn't come with an extra USB cable. The whole purpose of this should be to provide an extra connection to your computer, but instead to have to run around with the cable that came with the iPhone from the outlet to the computer. Cmon Apple, these are exhorbently overpriced to begin with. Give us something useful instead of nickle and diming us. I wish Blackberry was as good as iPhone so I didn't have to get overcharged so much.

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
Works great, until you buy a case
Written by RH from Atsubetsu-ku
Jul 19, 2008
In a strange oversight that I can't really explain, Apple engineers seem to have created a dock that can't be used by a large number of owners without considerable inconvenience. Since a lot of people are likely to buy a case for their phone, it's worth pointing out, that in the majority of cases you're either going to need to remove your phone from its case every time you want to dock it, or buy the more expensive universal dock which can hold a phone inside its case (albeit only when you remove the small plastic adapter).
For those with slide-in cases, this might be fine, but if you buy something like a silicon rubber jacket (which a lot of people use for its anti-shock potential), it's basically not worth the hassle (or the wear and tear) to keep removing it and putting it back on.99 of 113 people found this useful

You need two hands for this...
Written by SD from LEWIS CENTER

When you pick up the phone, the dock remains attached. You must hold down the dock and pry off the iPhone. Also the dock is too light and is easy to knock over. With no USB wire included, this product is overpriced.
Apple needs to work harder on this one...96 of 111 people found this useful
