    Batteries Needed

    • Written by from MANASSAS

If it wasn't for the short life of the battery it would work great, unfortunately it doesn't last that long.

    Great idea, horrible execution

    • Written by from Murrieta

Being limited to only 300 words, let me be quick and say that either 1) the battery life on this thing is horrible or 2) the quality is very questionable. Virtually every run I go on, it randomly shuts off multiple times during my run. This morning, I just gave up because I'd have to fiddle with my iPod every few minutes to turn the thing back on and it was distracting me from my run. I've only owned the product for about a month, so if this is due to a low battery, I'm not pleased at all with the battery life. I'll be dropping a larger amount of money on a Forerunner 405 instead.

    waste of money

    • Written by from Reno

I just bought the sport kit about an hour ago, hooked it up to my wifes nano (since for some silly reason you cant use it with regular ipdods...) and went on a run. about 1 mile into my run it needed to be restarted and this continued to be a problem for the next 2 miles. Im on my way back to Finish Line to get a refund. Idea is good, however apple's execution from paper to the street was poor. apple, 1. make it rechargable somehow or battery replaceable. 2. make it work for ipod video, touch and iphone (why not)

    Almost Perfect

    • Written by from Orange

For a trail runner like myself this was a great way to track my milage and set personal goals to maximize my workouts. At first I thought this was the best invention since the running shoe itself. However, like others have said, Apple dropped the ball with the inability to recharge, change, or otherwise replace the sensor alone without having to buy a whole new kit. It's like having to buy a new car every time it runs out of gas. Come on Apple, don't think like a PC.

    Loved it...now it won't calibrate.

    • Written by from Arlington

This product was great. I could compare my runs against my girlfriend 500 miles away, the online features are cool, and I thought it integrated with itunes very well.

But it only lasted me about 15 5k runs. Now it won't calibrate? From what I'm reading here, it's the battery. This is bad form, my friends.

You do NOT need this with Ipod Touch

    • Written by from Dodgeville

Two staff members at the local AppleStore told me I needed the whole kit. Ordered online as it was on sale and when I plugged the reciever in, the Ipod said there is already a reciever built in to the Touch. Checked it and it works great. Super system but don't waste your money, all you need with Iphoe or Touch is the receiver. Also, there are companies that make great lace on sensor holders, just look in any runners magazine or Google it. I'd give it a 5 star if I hadn't wasted the money.

    Good stuff

    • Written by from salida

The sport kit is great. Just don't keep the sensor in your shoe when you are just walking around because it drains the battery inside. And if you cannot wear nike shoes, just get a small pouch for the sensor that cost around 6 bucks. I got mine at Fleet Feet. Any sport store carries them. Tracking my miles and calories is so helpful.

    Not really fit for purpose

    • Written by from Swanage

I bought this product and the arm band to use with my nano. I worked fine for the first few runs, apart from it kept ripping a plastic piece off the bottom of my nano.

The real problem was after a few day it started to cut out during my runs, this was a real pain at first until I realized what the issue was. The badly designed nike arm band lets SWEAT seep into into your ipod and the nike receiver.
I now put a plastic bag over the top, I look like an idiot but at least it now works.

You would think that they might test for this, salty water + electronics aren't a great combination.. Given a bit of bit of this could completely destroy your ipod..

    nike sensor set unreliable

    • Written by from Cincinnati

My family has purchased 4 sets of these. One has worked for nearly 2 years now. Another worked well for 1 year and died. We have since purchased 2 more sets in an attempt to replace the 1 that died. Right out of the box, neither of those 2 sets worked. No matter what we did, we could not get them to calibrate accurately for distance and speed. So, if you order this product, realize that you are gambling with your money. Right out of the box, it may or may not do what it was designed to do. The quality control seems slipshod for a pair of companies like Apple and Nike. When it works, it is great. When it doesn't work, well, it just does not work. If you get 1 that doesn't seem to work, return it immediately. Instead of doing that, we kept trying to get the 2 defective sets to work thinking it was us. So, we are now the proud owners of 4 sets of this product -- 3 of which don't work.

Buy it and get running, don't worry about the battery life issues

    • Written by from Payson

I love this product, it served as a great motivator to begin running again. I just purchased a second sensor after the battery ran out on my first sensor. The first sensor lasted for one year or ~600 miles. I was disappointed the battery did not last as advertised. However the replacement sensor is well worth my $20 for the motivation during running. The voice feedback system is great, the online stat tracker is great. Accuracy is nearly spot on. I RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. Get it and go run!

    Great idea, lousy hardware.

    • Written by from De Soto

I loved the concept and initial performance of the Nike + iPod Sports kit. However, after my sensor battery died and I realized that it would cost $20 for a replacement sensor, I was very disappointed. There must be a better idea to have a replaceable battery. Until then I will not buy another sensor.

    Great Motivator!

    • Written by

I received the kit for Mother's Day 2 years ago. At first I was a bit skeptical, but after using it for a while, loved. I started with an older Nano, then upgraded to the newer one right before they came out with the new ones! A bit frustrating trying to keep up with changing technology. I have never had any problems except that the battery went out in the sensor so I had to order a new one. No problem there, it was here in about 3 days. Considering that I use it every day, I guess 1 1/2 years of battery life is okay. I would like it better if you could just replace the battery though. I love the Nike + website and have joined lots of challenges which keep you motivated. I have now walked 1500+ miles and my doctor tells me that I am in the best shape I have been in a long time.

    loving it!

    • Written by from Ellsworth

If you're looking for a high end piece of equipment with high level precision, this may not be for you. If; however, you are looking for an extra bit of motivation and a great wake to keep track of your progress, buy it!

Regarding the comments about the battery, the sensor has a tiny button on the back to turn it off and on. Nike says it will have 1,000 hours use so I figure the way I run (6 to 8 hours/week), it should be good for a year. $19/year isn't too bad. I do wish they would come up with one with a replaceable battery, but until they do this is about the best thing for the money I've found. Given what I spend on shoes, etc., $19 over a year doesn't change my running budget that much.

Anyway, I love this addition to my running!

    See you outside!

    • Written by from Beaverton

I just got a pair of Nike+ shoes (Nike's work well for my narrow feet anyway) and the sensor yesterday and tried it out with my ipod touch. It was so fun! I had no problems getting the sensor to connect to the ipod.

The best thing for me - I no longer have to go walk/run on the treadmill at the gym just to get feedback on my speed, distance, etc. See you outside!

    such promise and so disappointing

    • Written by from vancouver

I was so excited to get this . . it worked great and was inspiring for about a month and quit working. My friend had three that she had to return each time and couldn't get one that worked right. My co-worker bought one when I was raving abuot it for the first couple of weeks and his quit after one week. The website was great and encouraging, but once your sensor quits for whatever reason all of your personal challenges don't update even if you are still working out so it doesn't appear that you've achieved any of them. To order a new sensor from Nike is 19 plus 9 shipping, to buy a whole new kit is 29 dollars. In reading the reviews, they just don't work. It's too bad. It's the coolest concept but it's just got way too many bugs. I'll buy one more whole kit at $30 but after that I'm done until they can get it right. :-(

    Fantastic little gadget

    • Written by from Laval

Although this is a great gadget for runners who use their ipod, I have to say that I was very disappointed that the lifespan of the battery is only about a year, and I have learned just recently that you need to change the sensor in order to change the battery. Very eco-unfriendly. Very expensive as the replacement sensor is 25$, not available in stores and has to be shipped (plus the taxes are calculated AFTER the shipment has been added to your order). That is the reason I have to give it 3 stars because that was a very big disappointment. Besides that, this gadget is excellent for runners and has been my faithful companion for running in the last 18 months. But now that my sensor is kaput, I have to wait 2 weeks to get my new one and have to manage without.

    Bad battery - fun device

    • Written by from cleveland

I am on my second Nike+iPod. Why second? Because I liked the first so much! My first one lasted for 1 year and about 200 miles of running. I kept in a pair of shoes I used only for running, so the battery was only on while I was running.

    The good:

more convienient than GPS (music player and mile/time tracker all in one light weight package)
    Good software to track everything

    The bad:

Off by about 10% over 4 miles (my average run; GPS = 3.8 and Nike+ = 4.1 miles). That was on flat runs at steady pace - not that big a deal, but still.
Hard to pause/work controls while running (I have Nano from 1 generation ago)
Stops the music if you pause (I like to pause when I stop to stretch - does not pick up right away)
Battery - come on 1 year or less - really? why not let us easily replace a $1 battery. Inexcusable.

    Great product - highly recommended

    • Written by from Houston

Love it! I purchased the Nike+ kit a few weeks ago and have found that it really helps motivate me during long runs. I did not purchase the Nike+ shoes but instead I bought a small pouch which was originally designed to go around a dog's collar - I have put my shoe laces through this and keep the Nike sensor in this pouch. Works very well and any pet shop should have these ID pockets. Despite other reviews, I have found this to be fairly accurate, with the exception of the 2nd time I used it, when I put my house key in the pouch. This interfered with the signal and as soon as I removed my key everything worked as normal. Overall, this is a fantastic product and for the money it can't be beat. Other traditional pedometers cost about the same, so why not give it a try?

    Disappointing, it burns out quickly.

    • Written by from Grande Prairie

This product works when calibrated for the right distance but is disappointing because you cannot put in new batteries but need to buy new sensors. Being a recycling kind of person, I thought that I would buy another sensor after the first one burnt out a year after I purchased it. The next one lasted 3 months finally my last one lasted 2 months. Thank you but Nike will no longer be getting money from me and hopefully if you are reading this review they won't get money from you either.

I would give it zero stars if possible.

    Enhance your running experience

    • Written by from Glasgow

I was given the Nike+ kit as a gift and I can truly say that it has inspired and motivated me to achieve goals that I would have had a hard time reaching before.

The online service is fantastic for analysing your runs, setting yourself goals and hosting challenges with other users. I am now running a 10K in a decent time - quite a feat for someone who was quite overweight last year!

The Nike+ iPod Sport Kit is not going to do the running for you, but it will give you inspiration and motivation when you need it most. 5 stars.
