    Great Product, shame about FreeFlight

    • Written by from Bordon

The actual hardware is great, and the applications available are good. However, I can't help feeling that FreeFlight should still be here. It was removed from the App Store over a patent dispute and the joystick control, although wonderfully precise, isn't anywhere near as fun as ducking and diving your iPad around.

Ar freeflight 2,0 and intuitive tilt control....is not available on apple device and nobody know why and for how long. This is a ridiculous situation for a serious company. They dont tell about this on the parrot web site and on apple store. Android device work very well with absolute control, i would not be surprise that apple over protective politic is the main responsible of this situation.

    Wait before buying this drone

    Currently crippled for iOS devices.

This drone used to be great. It is now crippled on iOS as of some point in March when they "updated" their apps to disallow all the cool functionality. No "intuitive" flying modes are available. Don't know already how to fly RC stuff really well? Don't buy this.

I decided on an iPad Mini just for the AR Drone 2.0

I have had many RC toys-- planes (now toothpicks), boats and cars-- and this is the easiest, most rugged, and the most capable.

Some software features will make use of iOS devices which have GPS chips and also those with Internet connection (like the iPad Mini with cellular capability), but if your device lacks those, it will not detract from the flying and video abilities.

Ease: With half a charge remaining, I landed, handed my iPad to a friend who had never flown any such craft before, gave him thirty seconds of instruction, and away he went, only landing when the battery ran low.

Rugged: My indoor shell and blades show signs of contact with solid surfaces, but no repairs have been needed as a result. My outdoor shell is pristine despite equal use. That is why I felt comfortable handing the controls over to an inexperienced friend. I checked, and parts are inexpensive and available at my local hobby shop, at Apples Stores, and online. Many videos on how to repair (easy) and modify the Drone are on YouTube.

Capable: I can pilot the Drone to any point in space within its (~50 meter) range or land it with precision on its own box. For show-- I fly it close and then pet it as it hovers beside me before sending it off again. The videos are great and in HD.

iPad: Of course, I really like my iPad Mini. Some users claim to get better flying range from an iPhone, but whatever range difference their may be has not been an issue for me.

Was great, now poor due to software change

I've been a huge fan and booster of this project. The standout feature is the "absolute mode" that makes the drone easy to fly on the first attempt. That feature is no longer available on Parrot's latest iOS software. Apparently, according to the blogs, it is still available on Android devices. There seems to be no way to get the old iOS software. I would NOT recommend buying this product until the absolute mode software is available.

the parrot ar drone 2.0 is very fun. the only thing i dont like about it is the fact that the guy at the source said that the video quality is 1080p. i tried the camera but it was not 1080p. but still its worth the $300 something dollars.

    $300 well spent...
precision of controls, quality, video, streaming, hoovering, flying,.... everything is very exceptional....
first day could be a little hectic. but once you know the controls, fun is endless.
there could be few things which could be fixed, but i'm not going to sit here and complaint, since everytime i take it out of the box, its nothing less then fun and a smile on my face. :)
If you dont have it, you are missing out...
    GET IT AND ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!

    Unbelievably Bad

I can't think of something else I've bought for £280 that is as shockingly bad as this. The construction is flimsy, the craft is unresponsive, the user's manual is unintelligible, the battery lasts for about 4 minutes before needing a recharge that takes one and a half hours.

All in all this device is a complete waste of time and money. I would advise anyone considering one of these to think again.

I was skeptical in buying this seeing as its $300... Glad I did! It's awesome! The technology in this is amazing. Even on windy days it still can fly (just wouldn't recommend flying too high). The camera isn't breathtaking, but its really good considering its small and attached to a helicopter! Bottom camera though is horrible. Not even worth using. I'm a beginner flyer and it was pretty easy for me to pick up and use. Battery doesn't last long, buy a spare. A lot of technology to power up, doesn't surprise me. All in all, glad I got it!

A frustration and a waste of money

I bought this to have fun with my son. After a few short flights (miserable battery life) which was fun, the PIC watchdog emergency error appeared. We thought it must've been the jolt from dropping about 10 feet down and so followed the website recommendation and changed the nav board which involved not just buying a new nav board but also the tools to undo the customised screws. After painstakingly following the video tutorial to the letter, all we got was the SAME error. Waste of money, frustrated and sad son. Will not recommend it to anyone.

Awesome. Easiest to fly RC anything!

Hey for all those people that say this is no good, they need there head examined! I am paralyzed from the neck down and I can control this with my only moving finger right from my wheelchair with no problems. This does everything it says it's supposed to and flies so easily. I used to fly RC professionally before I was injured and this thing is amazingly nimble. The only con is battery life at 12 minutes. This is equivalent to anything on the market, but it's so much fun I recommend an extra!

The Drone is fantastic. Very easy to use. Not good in the wind, but you cant have everything. Get the 60beat controller, makes it very easy to fly.

After paying a small fortune for this thing I was excited to get it home and try it out. The first thing that struck me was how it looks nothing like the marketing pictures or of those on the box. It looks like cheap polystyrene. But Parrot tells us that this is high tech stuff. So I admit it took me a little while to get used to and had a couple of MINOR crashes. The battery life (All of about 8 minutes) is not long enough to get any decent practice. The answer is to buy more batteries but these are another AUS$50 each! Then the cross member snapped which in turn destroyed the main board. After replacing them both the cross member snapped AGAIN just with a normal landing. This time I glued it back together. Today I flew it again and now it won't save any files to USB. Then the final straw was turning it on later and finding that the camera no longer works. As far as I'm concerned this thing is a scam. Yes spare parts are available and easy to fix but it breaks so easily and the parts are so expensive that this turns into an extremely expensive hobby. I am really surprised Apple endorse this thing by selling it on their site and most of the other reviews can only be written by the marketers at Parrot. Do yourself a favour and visit AR Drone forums. I wish I had before I bought this thing. They are full of stories like mine. I'm only giving this one star because I have to.

    AR.Drone Review

The AR.Drone 2 is very good design from the bottom to top, although having saying that it does have a problem, battery life is only ten minutes so I recommend buying 2 or 3. The 720p camera at the front of the drone is very well done, good for photography like I do! Well don to the parrot!

I've now owned this drone for a short period of time and it is one of the best app enabled devices out there. Even in the realm of RC quadcopters, this is one of the most sophisticated products and of very high quality. The relatively short flight time per charge is my only issue with it. I have not found range to be a problem, but perhaps I haven't pushed things far enough. Video streaming directly to your iOS device will hog some of the WiFi bandwidth and therefore may impose limitations on range or video quality and smoothness. I would therefore suggest the use of a USB stick for the purpose of recording video. You will not be disappointed by this drone. Thoroughly recommended!!!

Very simply- fantastic! Just a brilliant piece of equipment!

With its twin cameras and very easy controls I recommend the AR Drone 2.0 to everyone looking for some easy fun with there Apple devices, I use an iPhone 5 to control mine and the compact HD display of the 5 makes controlling it a doddle.
Anyone who says this isn't a great bit of kit is either too old, too daft or too impatient to fly it, after all, it is a very sophisticated thing, so you have to have some basic knowledge or even just an idea of how to fly or drive something to use it (just get on Tom Clancys HAWX or Forza on your XBOX or PS3 if your having troubles using it, that should help you out).
The only thing I would say though is if you don't have one, BUY ONE!

This helicopter is extremely easy to fly, huge fun and the onboard video cameras (two) and telemetry are a nice touch. To fly properly you may benefit from buying a 3rd party app (there are plenty available with reviews) and there are other hardware upgrades for longer flight times and better performance if you so wish. A great product only slightly let down by the inherent range (think also altitude) limitations of WiFi.
