    great sound, awful connectivity

    • Written by from palo alto

as others have said: it looks great and even sounds great for the 10 seconds it stays connected. if it lets itself cajoled to connecting in the first place. last firmware update was released in february of 2013 - over a year ago. a measure of the effort and speed they are trying to fix these issues...

LIBRATONE and APPLE products: it just doesn't work

    • Written by from Paris

I should have read these reviews before buying this product. A couple of days after receiving it, I had to ship it back to LIBRATONE so they could fix it. But they didn't. As written elsewhere, the sound is great when it works... except it just doesn't. Worse still, it makes all my apple products (iMac and Apple TV at least) bug. Very very frustrating, you have to disconnect the Apple TV several times while watching a movie and put it back on and off several times too. This was the worst hardware purchase of 2014. I don't understand how Apple can still recommend it after the bad reviews. Or why don't they just test it before recommending it?

Nice Sound if You Can Get Them To Play.......Good Luck :-(

    • Written by from Atlanta

I was one of the very early adopters having bought 2 live and 1 lounge 2 years ago.

    The Good (when they work)
    -Sound is very good
    -They look good
-Very portable easy to move around

    The Bad
-The WiFi radios are terrible and it is literally impossible to keep them connected
    - There appears to be no solution to this problem

This is a product that could have been great but instead is really bad as it never works when you want it to.

    Horrible network range

    • Written by from OSLO

Great looking and ok sound, but it constantly falls out of my home network, and has to reconnect. Even bought a wifi range increaser, but without significant improvement. I would not recommend buying this product unless you are planning on only using its dirct play feature.

Cool fuzzy-factor, good sound, but HORRIBLE connection.

    • Written by from Walnut Creek

I like the look of this speaker. The one closest to my desk at work is green. There are a total of 4 Live speakers in my office. Yes, they all use Wifi as do most of the employees in the office, but only the speakers suffer. No other connections are this bad. I downloaded the Libratone App to see what the connection % is and it never goes above 78%-81%. It was even lower before we put the speaker next to a metal support beam. I normally believe that you get what you pay for. Not in this case. Pretty expensive for a product with the same horrible connection issues since it first came out. You're better off with a Sonos.

    Cannot get it to work

    • Written by from Mendon

My friend has the Lounge and Zipp. I spent an hour trying to connect the Lounge after she got a new Apple router, and to set up her new Zipp.

I managed to find the Lounge wifi once, but after it rebooted, no connection. I was able to play music from her phone via a cable connection to her AppleTV, but could not control the volume above a wisper.

I was not able to get the Zipp to connect at all.

There is no help on the Libratone web site for these issues.

I give it one star because zero is not an option.

    Great sound poor connection

    • Written by from Aabybro

The sound of the speaker is very good , the speaker look very good and is easy to set up and connect. I live in a small 50 M2 condo, max 6 m (and a concrete wall) between wifi router and the speaker , connection is 56 - 71% according to the app but unfortunately the connection disappear very frequently which is very annoying. This happen with iPhone 5 and iPad. I keep hoping for an update that will solve the problem but possibly its in the hardware. A shame since Airplay is really great.

    Connection Issues

    • Written by from SAINT LOUIS

As punishment for being one of first to buy the Libratone Live for $600 or whatever ridiculous price it was at the time, we are cursed with the illuminated bird button and its taunting, incessant yellow and red blinking. Long gone are the days of the peaceful while pulsing or solid glow and the music, oh right, the music. I have spent countless hours troubleshooting. Read every word of the owner's manual. Repeated all the appropriate steps hundreds of times. Nothing but silence. I hate this pie-shaped log. What now, Libra posers? What's the fix? Send me a new one. Update the app. Anything, now, help.

There are plenty of wireless speakers out there now from companies you've actually heard of. Please, if you're shopping, do yourself a favor and pick one of those. My Libratone is nothing more than a stylish wedge to hold doors open and collect dog hair in its snazzy fuzzy fabric.

    Good sound. AirPlay issues.

    • Written by from Grand Junction

The form factor is the reason I bought the LIbratone. I was willing to pay a bit extra because it's the only thing that fit my space. The sound quality is decent, even outdoors.

The AirPlay aspect simply does not work reliably. I have several other AirPlay devices and they are always available to select on the list of devices. Not the Libratone, I have to cycle the power in order to get it to show up on my list of devices. Hopefully they'll fix this someday with a software update.

    Horrible disappointment!

    • Written by from New York

I've owned this for more than a year and I can say with certainty that its overpriced unreliable and nowhere near worth the purchase price. I'll chalk this up to overpaying for early tech, shame "A" hawking in their stores, I expected better (at least something that works reliably).

-- poor intermittent connection despite every other wifi device i test pulling full strength (on "A" equipped wireless no less)
-- sub par sound for the price -- if this was $200, it would be acceptable sound..
-- horrible reliability -- constantly have to reset and reset up only to have it fail until I give up as my kids lose interest in hearing their songs while I try to get this to work. Supposed to be simple and useful instead it's exact opposite

Will be looking for new option and dumping this in trash. Should get a refund!!!!

    A complete disaster

    • Written by from LONDON

I should have known when the bloke in the apple shop in Covent Garden couldn't make it work. It is an ugly slug of valueless annoyance. It won't work. £329 donation to the recycling. Big shame as when it does work the sound is great, but completely unreliable and only for those with computer science masters.

I gave it one star because zero isn't an option.

Bright, clear and surrounding sound experience.

    • Written by from WIndsor

    This is great speaker overall.
1, Excellent midrange and treble, resolution is high, sound is clear.
2, Modern design is very easy to blend in your room, the cashmere wool cover brings out some warmth. But the fit and finish is not good at all.
3, Just need one power cord, no extra remote or cables, setup is minimum and easy.
4, I personally love the little nightingale logo glowing white in the dark.
5, The bass of this speaker is not strong, but enough.
6, The fullroom feature is one of a kind, it really helps the speaker to reach its full potential regardless of the layout of the room or the location you place it.
It all depends on personal preferences, different people prefer different sound setups, it's hard to tell which speaker is better, so your body will tell which one is the best for you!

This integrated speaker and amplifier is very easy to use and sounds really great. Mostly because it is possible to calibrate it to our living room with an app to iPhone or iPad.

    Great sound

    • Written by from Edmonton

This speaker produces great sound. It was easy to set up and works great across all my devices(iPhone, ipad, macbook, iMac). It also works great when friends are over and want to show you some new music they have on their phone, just select the speaker and they can play from their phone. Very clean sound, I found using the voicing optimization app actually makes a big difference depending on the speaker placement. Overall I'm very happy with this speaker, there have been about 4 times (over a year period) where I've had to reset it to make the connection work. I would give it 5 stars if this hadn't happened. To be fair though, it could have been a network problem and not the speakers fault.
Great speaker that has worked flawlessly 98.876404% of the time

Initially good but later failed Airplay reconnection

    • Written by from Cambridge

When I bought a speaker late last year (wanted to test the technology before purchasing more), it had good sound quality and worked well over AirPlay except for dropping sound very occasionally. However, I have moved and bought a new wireless modem. When I tried to reconnect to AirPlay, I initially succeeded only to have the speaker go into endless search (yellowing blinking) mode after an unsuccessful attempt to download an update to the Libratone iPAD app. I have tried everything - even the factory reboot, and nothing will get the speaker working again. Not what one expects for speakers that cost this much.

    Great sound but terrible connection

    • Written by from San Diego

I must admit that sound that comes out of this speaker is fantastic but this is where it stops for me

Almost every single time I try to play music through it using AirPlay it disappears from the list and the only way to fix it is by turning it off and on again. Each time I switch from my iPod touch to streaming from my MacBook it does the same thing. In last couple of months I didn't even use it because when you are on a couch you don't expect getting up to reboot it because it wouldnt play and requires reboot so I just use my computer speakers or stream through apple tv and my tv speakers.

All my firmware is latest, my entire wifi network is latest apple airport extreme, I am all Mac but this thing won't Behave therefore I would call it the worst purchase of mine in past 10 years. Looks great though and I bet it wouldn't have issues connecting audio source by cable and also their site is terrible so not much help around ether, not even a good blog about how to fix this garbage

Nothing else out there quite like it.

    • Written by from Berwyn

Having a couple Airport Express units for connecting powered speakers I kept looking toward a neater solution in a small package and this Libratone got my attention. I absolutely dislike extra cords running between things, especially external power supplies lying about the floor. This unit has the simple power cord and nothing more. Adding to the simplicity is one multifunction logo-button on front and a recessed power switch on back.

Since I use a long password containing special characters for my Airport wireless I had to temporarily simplify it for the initial connection. One other speed bump is having to discover the MAC Address of the unit as it's not provided in labels nor in the internal setup page. That's due to my using Airport's managed access and I did not want to disable it even for a few minutes. I hope they add that to their setup.

After connecting, I immediately checked for the firmware update with the iPhone app which installed quickly and that allowed me to continue using the special characters for the wireless network. Connections from my iMac, Macbook Air, iPhones and iPads have been working fine, no disconnects.

I was surprised at the sound from this compact unit, better depth and definition than the separate power speakers I have, and stronger, healthier bass which is much less muddy. Very nice indeed.

Liking the overall esthetics (both design and technical) I intend on getting a couple more for the house, nothing else out there quite like it. Pricey - maybe, but when I forked out a small fortune for my first computer many decades ago a friend pointed out I had the best reason in the world to buy it: "It's because I wanted it." Haven't had buyers remorse then or now!

Just received my new Libratone speaker as a Father's Day gift and what an amazing treat. The setup was incredibly simple and the sound that comes out of this little bad boy is incredible! Took me no more than 5 minutes from opening the box to enjoying my iTunes library on the deck of my home. Being able to play DJ from my iPhone is probably one of the things Steve Jobs envisioned and this technology makes it happen simply and quickly. I downloaded the Libratone app too and that makes any updates a breeze too. Love my Libratone!!! Keep bringing "insanely great" products like this to market, Apple!!!!
