The MPEG2 Streaming Component is a "helper file" not an application!

    • Written by from MILTON KEYNES

What the MPEG-2 Playback Component does is to enable 3rd Party apps like Squared5's excellent MPEG Streamclip to work with Quicktime apps on Mac OS where video and audio file conversion is required. That's why it's referred to as a "helper file", for heaven's sake!

For the record, I transcode and reversion video files for a living, and despite the fact that I have some very expensive Mac and Windows-based tools in my armoury, MPEG Streamclip is one of the most useful and reliable of them all. I really can't do without it. But to get the most out of it you really do need this Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback Component - so buy it now. Note also that although Lion (and, presumably, Mountain Lion) supposedly doesn't require the component, they actually do in order to make Streamclip to work properly. Again - read the notes on Squared5's web page!

So, those who are knocking the component and saying that it doesn't do what it's supposed to do - just read the release notes will you? Jeez.....

Other reviewers are poorly informed. The MPEG-2 component is necessary not because of Apple, but because the MPEG group required Apple to license it in years past. Since they had to pay this cost is rolled along to you. MPEG is also not technically designed to be edited so if you're bringing MPEG to into Final Cut you're doing it wrong to begin with. About the Lion comments, the functionality is built into Lion so you no longer need this product, Apple no longer charges you for MPEG functionality, I don't know why people are dinging them for it. If you need to install QuickTime 7 on Lion and need the Component, you can use the installed from Squared5 to install this.

So I researched my problem, installed this $20 fix and it worked perfectly. You need to read what it will play closely before you purchase. I wish this was a part of the Apple package, but it is what it is and I'm happy I can now watch my movies.

The Quicktime MPeg-2 add-on is essential for editing or playing muxed DVD streams or demuxed (elementary) streams on a mac using Quicktime Player 7, Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, and MpegStreamclip. It does NOT handle ac3 audio,
for that you would need either Perian or the AC2 Codec ( google either to find).

But if your elementary streams contain PCM or MP3 audio, it will handle
    those files no problem.

This is my first recommendation when it comes to editing DVDs you made on the mac,
but don't have access to the original footage. You need to pull a clip off
that dvd you made for Grandma to send to Uncle Joe, you'll need this.

Read the reviews first, then downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b4 beta (googled it to get site - free download), installed it, purchased Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback Component, installed it, mpg files now play brilliantly with all sound & video. Previously used Movist to play mpg files. Conversion using MPEG Streamclip is great. This is an excellent product in conjunction with Streamclip. You need both together to make each work properly. Perhaps this could be explained in the product outline, but it was pretty clear to me from the reviews. Very satisfied with results, and would strongly recommend product.

I have a Sony DCR-IP220 that produces mmv files. Of course, Sony no longer supports that format so I basically have a verrrry expensive "betamax". I needed some way to see, convert and edit these on my iMac and MacBook Pro. After reading several posts all over the net, I finally settled on "MPEG StreamClip v. 1.93b4" (beta) and went ahead, bought and installed the MPEG-2 Playback Component for MAC OS X. All of this took place after hours and hours of trying different player converters/add-ons, etc.

All I can say is that it works and works flawlessly. I have NONE of the problems reported by many others regarding loss of audio. Since I am converting from a proprietary file type (Sony mmv) I didn't have much hope that it would work at all but, so far, (with fingers crossed) no problems whatsoever.

I am converting mmv files and most of the reviewers on here don't have to deal with that headache but I have to say that I am a little bit happier with my "betamax" now. :)))

I can't speak for anyone else but this worked great for me teamed up with MPEG Streamclip to rip some MPEG files into a mac friendly format. Not sure what problems other people are having but perhaps they aren't using the codec correctly?

    good luck!

Just purchased in order to work with MPEG Streamclip and my Sony Handycam video files. I agree we shouldn't have to purchase additional software just to make it work but at least it did work!

I downloaded MPEG Streamclip first and tried to convert and Streamclip pointed me directly to this MPEG-2 Playback Component Site. I bought it, downloaded it, restarted my computer and it worked beautifully. Just need to download and install and the rest takes care of itself. No problems with audio at all. Operating Snow Leopard and using MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3.b2.

I have had this for a long time and is essential when you start authoring DVDs and MP2 content. To those complaining about it "not playing audio". First read the product description. It tells you plainly it will not read certain audio muxed in the mpg. 2nd if you are complaining you probably know nothing about mpg encoding. This product does exactly what it says.

Finaly a solution, but should be easier on Macs.

I have a new JVC camcorder which creates those lovely .MOD files. I used to use Pinnacle Studio to edit stuff on the PC and it worked fine if I just changed the file name. But for the Mac it wasn't that easy (PC died and I switched to Mac). After downloading at least 5 Mac applications to try and do the conversion, I put out the 20 bucks and also downloaded Streamclip. So much easier for me! Audio worked fine. Video was shot in 16:9 and it kept the format. Most other conversion applications only had 4:3 output. While iMovie is not as good as Studio (IMO) this now at least let's me edit some quick family video and burn to DVD.

You need to use a separate program to get the sound to work. After you get the MPEG-2 Playback Component you need to download a program called MPEG Streamclip (available from Apple for free).

Open your videos in there. Go to File -> Export To Quicktime. Problem solved.

Frankly I cannot understand all the one starrers out there.

There seem to be a lot of people having problems with audio. If, for example, you're wanting to extract the contents of a DVD so you can edit them in say Final Cut, you'll need to use MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOB files ripped from the DVD to a codec that editing packages understand. Without the QT MP2 Playback installed (at the time of writing, Feb09, onto QT Player 7.6) this isn't possible.

In your editing package you may need to render the clips you export from MPEG Streamclip in order to be able to hear the audio, though in iMovie '08 I don't even think that's necessary.

The thing couldn't possibly be simpler or cleaner to use!

DOWNLOAD: the download tab is right there on your receipt when you buy the thing. It's the word highlighted in blue in your order summary and it reads, cryptically enough I admit, "Download" with a little downward pointing blue arrow next to it.

It's tip top, don't diss it.

MPEG Streamclip suggested I download this component when I attempted to convert a DVD into web format (in this case flv). It worked first time and perfectly. I'd spent ages trying to find a decent converter and have found this to work adequately, and has cured my headache!

This software works EXACTLY as advertised.

This software is a VIDEO decoder.

This has NOTHING to do with audio. When you by this component you are granted the right to use the license required to view MPEG-2 files.

Many have written that this software is a waste of money. They think this out of pure ignorance.

Combine this component with MPEG Streamclip (freeware) and you can rip DVDs to your heart's content.
