Answer
If you are needing to use a standard projector, most use VGA, and not HDMI, like this thing. However, it could work with an HDMI cord.

What exactly does this do and not do?
In the description it says that this adapter:
"mirrors whatever’s on your iPad or iPhone 4S screen".
Then a little further down it states that you can:
"Watch slideshows and films on the big screen in up to 720p by connecting your iPad, iPhone 4 or iPod touch (4th generation)."
But then over to the side there is a footnote that states:
"* Video mirroring is available with iPad 2 or later and iPhone 4S."
So what is the difference?
Also it states:
"The Apple Digital AV Adapter routes digital audio to screens that support it."
How do I know if my screen supports it?
I have an iPhone 4 and have ordered a "New" iPad. So I would like a few more specifics so that I know what I can expect it to do for each.- Asked by Juanita L from Cape Coral

Best Answer
This adapter exports audio/video through HDMI.
For the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2 and the "new" iPad, virtually everything can be mirrored to another display. This means it will display exactly what you see on both the iPad/iPhone and the monitor.
For the iPhone 4 and the 1st generation iPad, it will not mirror the screen (the processor isn't equipped for multiple display outputs.)
All of these devices will allow you to watch videos/pictures/slideshows on your tv using the adapter.
If the display device you are hooking it up to accepts audio through hdmi, then the audio will also be sent. Some older stereo receivers only pass through video (especially older Onkyo receivers) via hdmi.- Answered by William B from Babylon

Best Answer
As long as it's the iPad 2 or the new iPad (3) then it would mirror the whole screen, so for example, you'd be able to see the background wallpaper and the app icons.

Will this adapter receive audio/video from the Lightning adapter for the iPhone 5?
I currently use this adapter with an iPhone 4 and third-gen iPad mainly to project TV content from the SlingPlayer app onto my TV. It works quite well for this purpose.
I'm thinking of upgrading to an iPhone 5, and obviously this adapter can't plug directly into the new Lightning port. I want to continue to use this adapter so I can plug in the third-gen iPad.
Does anyone know if the new Lightning to 30-pin adapter will pass audio/video from the iPhone 5 to this adapter?- Asked by W Adam V from Norcross

Use Composite AV cable and Digital AV Adapter cords together to get surround sound as well as 720p video quality?
So I was looking at purchasing the Digital AV Adapter that Apple provides in their store, so that I could connect myriad to my flat screen via HDMI to play movies in 720p (the max the cord apparently allows). I know that HDMI carries video as well as audio through so I would be able to play the movie audio though the TV itself... This is not what I want.
I want to play the audio through my surround sound system and I thought maybe combining the Composite AV cable also supplied by Apple would work? Has anyone tried this yet? There is a second 30-pin connection available on the Digital AV Adapter for charging the iPad and I thought maybe the Composite AV cord could connect to that and then directly to the surround sound just for the audio?
Thanks!- Asked by Colin M from Woodstock

Does this work properly with IOS 6 and the iPad2 and, if not, will Apple pay for the return shipping of a defective product?
I would like to purchase the AV Adapter if it works as it is described...mirroring everything on your iPad 2. However, I read MANY complaints about the cable not working with IOS 6 and that the adapter is not working with all of the apps. I read that the adapter only relays sound/audio on some apps, while not rendering video. These reviews are on the Apple website. So, before purchasing, I would appreciate confirmation that the adapter works as advertised and, if not, and the adapter is, in fact, defective, that Apple would pay for the return shipping.

What is the difference between apple tv and cable (composite VGA)?
- Asked by Lorris A
- Mar 21, 2012
- Flag as inappropriate
Answer
Dear Lorris, I'm thinking that your question is about tranfering contents from your iDevices to a big screen. OK! With Apple TV (2nd & 3rd gen.) you can mirror the screen of your iDevice to your big screen. With a VGA or composite or component cable/adapter you can only put a little group of app on the big screen, eg: Youtube, Keynote Presentation and a few others,

Will the Apple Digital AV Adapter mirror the Sky Go App?
I'd like to be able to see the Sky Go App on a larger screen. My guess is that Sky will have prevented this but I'd like to know before I pay £35 for something that might be no use to me!
