469 Questions on Comparing Macs

  • So I am looking at getting the MBP in June and I want to use it for light gaming, i.e. battlefield 3 and or crisis 2,or 3.

Hey apple lovers, I am looking to get a MBP this summer but I want to know what I should get. As I said earlier I want to do some light gaming. I really don't think I need the high graphics but I also don't want to get an underpowered system. I am looking at the MBP 13in 2012, with a 500gb hard drive and 8gigs of ram. Think that would be enough? THANKS!!!

  • Accessing iTunes and iPhoto from Time Capsule. Which Mac should I get?

My iTunes and iPhoto libraries are housed in Time Capsule. Thus far, this has been very labor-intensive for my 4.5 year old Macbook. I plan to buy an new Mac but unable to decide which machine: 13" Air (possibly w/ 8GB RAM) or 13" Pro? Can Mac Air handle accessing these files easily with its limited processor? thank you

  • Which mac would you suggest i buy?

So my PC is on its way out and it seems logical to switch over to mac. This means i'll be using it for everything; that is, browsing online and streaming, listening to the 60gb of music i have, occasionally movies, and writing etc. but also I will need it for high powered things such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Final Cut Pro. The obvious thing i guess would be the 27" 3.2ghz for optimum power, but i also like the idea of a macbook to take it about with me. I might be willing to splash out on the 27", but would anyone recommend anything else? I wouldn't really play games, but I often have pro creative software.

  • iPad and Mac mini or MacBook

My current windows laptop is on the conk and I'm thinking of making the switch to mac. I already have an iPhone and iPad 2 and will shortly be getting Apple TV. My question is what is a better idea - Mac mini using the iPad as display and getting a mouse and keyboard or getting a MacBook? I pretty much use my laptop to produce power points and spreadsheets and a bit of web surfing/gaming. Any thoughts?

Honestly Alfred, that really depends on how you will be using your Mac on a daily basis.

If you're usually always on the go, and need something to quickly give you access to the web, emails, spreadsheets, documents, PDFs, etc. the Air is a great choice. (This is not always the case by any means, but usually those who get the Air may have other computers as well, such as desktops, and just need something on the go) On the other hand, the MacBook Air is pretty great. You get the Flash Storage options, that lets the Mac wake up just like an iOS device. You get 30 days of standby time if not using the Mac, the latest Graphics from Intel, a drive that's about twice the speed of ATA drives, and all in a body less than 2.38-2.96 lbs. depending on the display you get.

Now, if you need a power house, the MacBook Pro is your answer. With it's Quad-Core iSeries processor (15-inch and 17-inch only), it is capable of doing twice the shear number crunching of the MacBook Air. If you are going to be editing video day-in and out, this is a must have. This Mac is also offered in the 13, 15, and 17-inch display models. Even if you get the 13-inch, that's still loads of power. 2.4GHz, 4GB for RAM that you can update to 8GB, and on the higher up models, you get not only one, but two graphics boost. First, is the Intel 3000 card, and you also get the (ranging from) AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB GDDR5 (base 15-inch) to the AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics processor with 1GB of GDDR5 (17-inch)

Bottom line, the MacBook Air is great for when on the go. Its light, ultra portable, and quite fast. But if you need the most for what you pay for, I'd recommend the Pro. It has more RAM, hard drive, display, and even graphic options. Also, you can update the Pro once you purchase it, something you can't do on the Air. (not even RAM) So if you like the freedom to alter your hard drive, RAM, later on, I'd get the MacBook Pro.

Sorry for the long response, but I do hope it helps!

  • 13inch MacBook Pro or 13inch retina

I decide to buy my new notebook but I can't choose one! I work about music and always use Sibelius software, and surfing the Internet, and note a lot.How can I choose?

  • Should I buy an iPad mini or Macbook Air 11?

I already have a full iPad 3... the 6 month OLD iPad... but I do want a new computer because my Dell stinks really bad... like the battery will die instantly if I unplug it. But I also want a more portable tablet from Apple of course. Nither of them have Retina, I know but I just can't wait for either "next generation" ones. I was going to get a new iPod touch, but the iPad mini is only $30 extra.... so why not get that instead of the iPod. I'm so confused on which to get because The macbook can do EVERY thing that I do on my iPad, but the iPad mini can do everything also... oh, and just recently like yesterday, My dell computer stopped woking properly, so I can't sync my iPad anymore...

    Best Answer

I don't understand your reasoning behind wanting an iPad mini when you already have the iPad 3; But go with the MBA. It'll be of far more use than a smaller version of what you already have. And the MBA can do much more than everything you can do on your iPad; It's a more logical choice to skip the mini, and get the Air. If your only concern is that you can't sync your iPad anymore, then skip both. Since iOS 5 was released, it hasn't been necessary to sync you iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch for updates. And you can find an app in the App Store to back up your data.

    Macbook Air:

    + Thinner
The rMBP has an empty space in the middle because it was designed to hold a large Fusion Drive, but then Apple backed out and only offered an SSD. (Discovered by iFixit.com)

    + Lighter (by 1/2 pound)

+ Battery life is better (7.5 hours vs. 6.5 hours. Measured by AnandTech.com)

= Performance is same (within 10%, which you won't notice. Measured by AnandTech.com)

    - Screen is worse

+ $400 saving (assuming both have 8 Gb memory)

Apple charges $100 extra for the Retina display in the iPad (iPad 2 vs. iPad 3/4). Is the upgrade to Retina in a Macbook worth $400 and worse portability?

  • macbook pro retina 13' or macbook air 13'

do they have anything different besides retina display?
Which one is better for gaming?

    Best Answer

    Quick answer:
The display is the major difference. There are however other minor differences, which makes the Retina a _little_ bit faster and heavier.
I think that none of them is good for gaming, because for that you need a dedicated video-card, while both of these two computers have the integrated one (you need Retina 15'' for the Nvidia graphics card).

    Detailed answer:
The details of the differences depends on how you configure your mac. Here I compare two cases.

-- If one refers to the two basic configurations, then here are the differences:

    PROCESSOR
They both have a dual-core Intel Core i5 with 3MB shared L3 cache, but with two different frequenceis: Retina has 2.5GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz), Air has 1.8GHz (Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz)

    RAM
Retina has 8GB, Air has 4GB. They are both 1600MHz DDR3L

    STORAGE
    Same (128GB SSD)

    PRICE
Retina $1699, Air $1199 (On online apple store US)

-- If one instead compares the two best configurations (I mean with all the hardware options upgraded to the maximum), then here are the differences:

    PROCESSOR
They both have a dual-core Intel Core i7 with 4MB shared L3 cache, but with two different frequenceis: Retina has 2.9GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz), Air has 2.0GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz)

    RAM
    Same (8GB 1600MHz DDR3L)

    STORAGE
Retina has 768GB SSD, Air has 512GB

    PRICE
Retina $3199, Air $2199 (On online apple store US)

    -- For both configurations:

    SIZE & WEIGHT
Retina is 1.62kg (3.57 pounds), while Air is 1.35kg (2.96 pounds)
Retina has a larger height: 1.9cm vs [0.3-1.7]cm
Retina has a smaller width: 31.4cm vs 32.5cm
Retina has a smaller depth: 21.9cm vs 22.7cm

  • MacBook Air Vs. Macbook Pro???

I am just starting to get into graphic design and want to get a Mac. Besides graphic design I would use for normal everyday web searching. I have never had one before and cant for the life of decide between the MacBook Air Vs. Macbook Pro. Can anyone please help me?

    Answer

Macbook pro's are much better for heavier work like graphic design. Though they are slightly heavier but it is not much. The macbook pro is the better macbook in general

  • Compared to a normal desktop how big is the Apple Mac 21.5"

I am contemplating whether I should buy the iMac 21.5" or 27" inch. But I am unsure on whether the 21.5 would be too small.

  • buy a 13" Macbook Pro Retina display vs the new 27" iMac all-in-one?

Trying to decide between a 13" MacBook Pro Retina display or the new 27" iMac all-in-one.
I play youtube videos and watch movies, play pogo hearts, check emails & and internet searching.

  • Answer

Yes, the new macbook pro would be excellent, however, if you are just doing data entry/ accounting (namely text based stuff), the macbook air is a lighter, cheaper option that will be plenty fast and powerful for your needs.

  • will 13 inch MacBook Pro handle, moderate level of 3D modelling and rendering efficiently?

Hi, i am an Architect and was planing to buy a laptop which handles my architectural softwares efficiently. Mostly these softwares are related to 2d CAD, 3D modelling, rendering, etc. I was interested in Apple's 13-inch MacBook Pro. Well, Apple's 15 inch model seems appropriate for my requirements but, it does not fit into my budget. I previously had a high end 'Dell' model, but realized that it was not reliable at all, eats up lot of battery and gets heated up easily. I am no hardcore user of 2d CAD, 3D modelling, rendering, etc (Auto Cad, sketch up, 3ds max, etc.) softwares, but i do use them at a moderate level. All i want is a reliable laptop, which does not break down in the middle of my work and handles my 3D modelling and rendering (at a moderate level) efficiently. will 13 inch MacBook Pro handle my demands?

  • Best MacBook Air configuration?

My MacBook Pro just died so I need to buy a new computer asap and my grandmother offered to buy me a new Mac. After reading reviews I settled on the 13" MacBook Air. I'd rather upgrade to the best version available, i.e, 2.0GhZ, 8GB, 512GB or at least pick and choose among these upgrades to make it faster/get more storage. I'm a grad student writing a thesis, I'm also a translator so I use office for Mac a lot. For that reason it would really help to get the computer sooner than later so I stop wasting time without working on my thesis or making money. If I skip the default 1.8ghz, 4gb, 256gb configuration, it will take about a week to get it, whereas if i get the default I can pick it up tomorrow at the store. On the other hand I don't want to be too big a burden on my grandmother by going to the highest price point possible.
I will use it to write thesis and do translations, store the photos and videos of my two babies I usually take with my iPhone, store my iTunes library, use Skype and browse the Internet. It's important that I have a light computer so I can travel light with two kids (we fly internationally quite frequently).
So how should I configure my MacBook Air? Is it worth the extra time and money spent to get all the upgrades that are available with the 13" MBA?

  • Macbook Pro 13 in or Macbook Air 13 inch?

So I'm torn between which of these two models to be going through with. I am currently in high school and plan on going in to college to get a Masters or PhD, the major is still questionable, and I need a laptop that'll last me a while.

But the bottom line here is: Which is right for me?

    - I LOVE music, in all, I download about 5 songs per day, and already have 1000+ songs on my iTunes
-I download multiple photos, when taking pictures with my iPhone, downloading them on to my computer, making photo albums
-I will need dependable battery life with good portability.
-Then simple day stuff, like Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
-I will probably download a couple of apps from the Mac App Store.
-Typing a substantial amount of essays

If anyone can help my decision, thank you, in advance. Have a nice day!

I'm a massive fan of the Air 13', i have MBP 17 and they are true work horses, I'm a pro photographer and someone told me the air was a toy for me, then a chance meeting with a mac nut told me to have another look, the Solid state drive makes it fast, very faster, I can open it on a plane in economy (thats where I travel) and the battery is better

Sure its not as good as the MBP but the less weight and size means I use it 10 times as much, its a little like the iphone, most of my daily emails are answered from it, those tiny keys are a pain but it beats pulling out a computer every 10seconds, either way you will not be disappointed but for my money consider the air, oh and the weight difference is about one decent text book, think of walking around campus carrying an extra book for no reason. As a last note the smaller HD forces me to back up, which has proved a life saver.
