iMac vs. Mac Pro for video editing
I'm ready to replace an aging Mac G5 and upgrade to Final Cut Pro X. Should I go with a new iMac or a Mac Pro? How much memory, processing power, hard drive space, etc., should I add for best results (but without exceeding my $4,000 total budget?)

Best AnswerThe Mac Pro is not a High End desktop, it is a workstation. It is meant for companies to but 10 of them for Music Production, (ect). The 27 inch IMac does a great job with video editing. Dont spend to much money on harddrive space cause you can always buy a external dive when needed. I Do recommend that you upgrade your IMac to a Intel Core i7 processor, also at least 8 Gb of ram.

Best AnswerGet the 15" - Doing anything on the 15" (especially spreadsheets) will be easier, you will not have to constantly scroll like you will on the 13". Either way you are going to be carrying a computer that will need to be protected and not dropped, there is not that much difference in carrying either one, but the 15" is much better to use. If the 15" causes you trouble when carrying it you need to go to the gym.

AnswerIf money is not a problem, a Mac Book Pro is the best choice all day long. I have owned Macs ( Apples ) since the early 90s. Actually, I just bought another one 2 weeks ago. What a rocket. The Mac Book Pro is not only a much better choice in all aspects, but it's much more tough physically and durable too. I hope this info helps.

Best AnswerBoth sizes, when you customize them on the apple website, can choose either magic mouse, or magic trackpad. If you want both, it is $70. Also on both, on the apple website, you can choose the wireless keyboard or the wired one.

Best AnswerYou have two choices. You can buy Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, which comes in a few versions, home, business, etc. Or you can buy iWork for Mac, which is made up of Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, doing similar functions as Powerpoint, Word, and Excel. Each of the three components are separately available in the Mac App Store for downloading. Each approach has its supporters, although I use Microsoft Office for Mac to stay completely compatible with others using Office.

MacBook Air Vs. Macbook Pro?
Hi All,
I am looking at getting a Mac laptop and would like a little help in the selection.
I will be using it mainly for social play, I work away quite a bit so I like to use it in my hotel room to watch films etc on the wifi provided by the hotel. It will be just for facebook / email / twitter etc.
I will also be using it for video editing of my Go Pro footage from my racing at the weekends. Non of this is going to be "professional work" it will just be me playing with it and uploading to youtube for my friends to see.
At present I have never edited a video, I am planning on getting some One to One tuiton on this when I get the new laptop.
I really like the MacBook Air but I am wondering if this will cope with the video edits?
I will have most files on an external HD so I am not too bothered about huge onboard storage, which suits the Air, but will the media being external slow down the video editing package?
My other question is, apart from size, is the screen on the Air / Pro the same (I cant afford the Retina option so discount this)?
Thanks,
Andy- Asked by Andrew H

Best AnswerHello Andy,
Your question pretty much answered itself. I can only confirm some of what you are thinking.
Yes, a MacBook Air with an external drive should work perfectly since you are not doing heavy professional video work on it. If you delve more into video editing, then you need a more capable machine.
One thing though... If you can, go to an Apple Store and directly interact with the two computers and you would be able to quickly determine if the size of the screen is a major factor in your decision.

Which MacBook should I get for High School
I am going into a High School which recommends an iPad or a laptop (or both in my case), and I have my heart set on a MacBook. I can't spend over $1500, and I will be doing a lot of surfing and typing, as well as FB and Messaging. Possibly gaming, but not anything Hardcore. I also have about 10 GB of music and some pictures. I will take it in my bookbag, so it will get the occasionally bump. What should I get?

13" MacBook Air or 13" MacBook Pro?
I'm about to buy my first MacBook and need some help, I was waiting for the 13" rMBP but its way too expensive so I've decided to go with the 13" Air or Pro. I'm leaning towards the Air because of its looks and portability.
As I know very little about specifications I was wondering if someone could help me answer a few question;
Is 128gb flash storage enough in the air?
Is the 1.8GHz i5 quick?
Will I need an optical drive or can everything be downloaded now?
Is 4GB of ram enough?
Basically, I want the air but only if it is going to be quick while; web browsing, streaming, downloading, using word and excel (or apples equivalent) and gaming
Thanks for any help- Asked by David E

Best AnswerI have had a MacBook Air for almost 2 years now and find it quite good for all of the functions (except gaming, which I don't do) that you mention. I previously had a 15" MacBook Pro and found it too heavy to bother taking anywhere. Now I travel with the Air daily.
Streaming YouTube, downloading iTunes songs, etc, is fine and the only bother I have with upload or download speeds is trying to sync large media files with Dropbox: it can be frustratingly slow (but I am talking Gigabytes of files...). I rip DVDs to the Air and keep quite a few on that 128 gb drive, plus a healthy iTunes library, but otherwise store documents and photos in Dropbox and iCloud (meaning you don't necessarily have to have a huge internal hard drive...
I don't do gaming on the Air and if I were a gamer, I'd probably recommend the MacBook with the faster processor, more RAM and I'd put an SSD in it rather than a mechanical hard drive. The Air, I think, is all about mobility and productivity, with a bit of entertainment on the side.- Answered by Michael C from Edmonton

Best AnswerI bought the 2012 $599 mac mini and upgraded the RAM to 10GB as soon as I took it out of the box and it runs Minecraft at around 30 fps on max settings. So, the short answer is YES.

Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on the Macbook Pro 13"?
I'm looking to buy a new laptop and am currently undecided between the higher-end Macbook Pro 13" and the lower end 15". I like the size of the 13" and the specs are all good EXCEPT the graphics card. I play Sims 3 a lot and I also do some video editing and Photoshop works. Plus, the 15" is a little out of my budget. Is it possible to customize my Macbook Pro's graphics card from the current integrated Intel HD 4000 to a dedicated NVIDIA one?
