Initially I plugged in the cable to my New MB Air w/ Lion and the screen went blank and I lost the cursor on the TV. If this happens, unplug the cable, close and reopen the display, and things should be back to normal.
Right before I plugged the cable in, I clicked detect displays under display preferences and it showed up! Not sure if this is what caused it to work, but every little detail helps.
Just go to system preferences, sound, click the tab for Sound Effects-play sound effects through TV, and then click the tab for Output-Select a device for sound output-Click on TV
