what application can I use or how can I read books and magazines in a digital format on my macbook pro?

Yes, there are tons of apps, like the Kindle App for your MacBook that can allow you to read books.

Adobe, Amazon Kindle, And Barnes & Noble make programs to read books for macs. I like Amazon's software the best personally. They have good prices too. For magazines i recommended Zino Digital magazines, because many major magazines work with them.
