None of my drives that I use in the field work unless I'm connected to power. This is a major problem for me. When I'm in the field capturing footage and need to offload data to a drive, I have to use my old laptop.

I've tested the MOTU Ultralite Hybrid mk3 and Iomega eGo. They don't work via bus power. An old FireLite drive works fine via bus power. If you have devices that demand more, you may be SOL. It is a decent solution but isn't a true FireWire gateway.

It was horribly slow (I mean backing up at kilobytes instead of Megabytes or even Gigabytes !) -- i.e.: 10 GB in 1 hour !

After about 1 hour, I stopped the backup and hooked up a USB cable to the drive...it worked much faster. In about 5 minutes I had 10 GB again...

  • Horrible connection... super SLOW!!!

Trying to use this adapter for my Motu Ultralite mk3 audio interface, the slightest movement of the cable and the interface ejects Trying to use this adapter for my Motu Ultralite mk3 audio interface, the slightest movement of the cable and the interface ejects which causes all sort sod havoc in my software. Connection feels very flimsy and as if it will just fall right out (which it has a few times).

Also trying to use this adapter for all my external drives, drives disconnect all the time!! It so annoying especially when in the middle of a transfer. It's also useless for transferring any large file like audio or video, takes forever!! USB is faster by long shot.

I own two of these adapters plus a thunderbolt to ethernet one. Each one cost me $35 bucks! All of them are useless! Why do I have to pay an extra $105 dollars on top of the $3200 for the MBP just to use all of my peripherals?? And still have it not work?? Some of the the worst products I've seen from Apple in recent years. Shame, I'm rapidly losing confidence and Apple is rapidly losing my loyalty. FED UP! Apple should refund everyone who has purchased these useless adapters.

I just bought a new Mac Book Pro and wanted to port over from my four-year old model. I had an external iomega FireWire hard drive. I backed up the old computer with Time Machine. Opened up the new computer plugged in the adapter with the hard drive attached and followed the instructions and in an hour and a half or so I had my new computer up and running. I would highly recommend this adapter. Works as advertised.
