Answer
Visit the Apple Knowledge Base Article number HT1380 titled, "Learn about Apple Universal Dock"
It shows the Adapter Number for all iPods.
The iPhones have Adapters Numbers 12 and 15; and
The touches have Adapters Numbers 14 and 16. (It doesn't mention the 3rd generation touches so apparently they use Adapter Number 16....same as the 2nd generation touches.)
I hope this helps you out. …More- Answered by Avron Al G from Grants Pass

Answer
Hi MD:
If your Apple iPod touch has a volume control on its side, then it's a 2nd generation touch; else it's a 1st generation touch. (There was no Late 2009 or 3nd gen iPod touch with 16GB of memory.)
Both devices use different iPod Adapters....the 1st gen uses no. 14 and the 2nd gen uses no. 16.
Read the Apple Knowledge Base Article No. HT 1380 titled, "Learn about Apple Universal Dock"....as it lists all the iPod Adapter Numbers.
Good luck and enjoy your music thru the Sony Micro Hi-Fi System. …More- Answered by Avron Al G from Grants Pass
