Overview

The AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit with Monster Cables includes everything you need to get the most from AirPort Express: a Monster mini-to-RCA left/right audio cable, a Monster mini-to-optical digital Toslink audio cable and an AirPort Express power extension cord.

Use one or the other audio cable to connect AirPort Express to your stereo or powered speakers (which one you use depends on the ports on your stereo or powered speakers). Use the AC Cord for greater flexibility over placement of the base station.

Cables are the least of the issue

Written by JC from Santa Monica

Yes - you are paying more than you should. Generic thicker cables are just as good as monster. Not to mention the audiophile cables available at any high end stereo store are SO much better than monster. Cheap cables do lead to signal loss.

But that isn't the real issue.

The real issue is the compression, streaming, broadcast noise, conversion to analog, splitting from mini cable and then split to RCA all of which radically degrages the quality of the audio.

If you seriously care about sound quality, you shouldn't be using itunes or wireless audio connections. But if like 99% of us, convenience trumps quality and this is a fine purchase.

If you own $800 plus speakers, don't even think about using airport express. You will hear the difference.
But if you just want an easy way to have decent quality sound, this is your baby

    $39.99 for a $5.00 cable...

Go straight to Radio Shack and pay 5 for the same cable, just won't be the "Monster Cable" brand or match the color of your iPod. Big Whoop! More

    Not For Techies

Written by TL from PORT MOODY

    Jan 27, 2007

If you are a techie and already know everything than don't read this. I bought one knowing that they occasionally cut out. I made sure I set it up properly but as I was loving it mine started cutting out. I returned it thinking I got a faulty one but spoke with someone who actually knew what they were talking about and weren't just interested in their commission and he explained some things to my non techie self. Firstly, if you cut out it's because of other wireless signals interrupting yours. Thus, connect it straight to the modem and your problem will be solved. Haven't had a problem since. Next, as far as quality goes, my reciever has I optical so it was a choice to use it for my itunes or my TV and movies. I settled on the latter. I haven't tried the optical sound so I can't compare it to anything but I will say this: I got quality monster RCA cables and THICK professional speaker wire. This has made an ENOURMOUS Difference in my sound quality and have no desire to try my luck with the optical cable- I'm sure it's great but get the right wiring regardless if you want sound that makes a difference. Quality RCA's and Quality thick quality wires for me came to just under $100. Out of all the money I spent on my HDTV, Home Stereo and Computer, This was the best money spent. As for the Airtunes- I think it's apples greatest invention yet and would recomend it to those who don't want to hear their great tunes on whimpy desktop speakers. Good luck. More

    Optical cable sounds amazing

    Written by BM from Houston

    Mar 16, 2009

None of the previous reviews encompassed what I needed, so I thought I'd write my own.

The mini-to-toslink (optical) cable is awesome. I have a fairly nice stereo system (Rotel/B&W), and wanted to stream music from my laptop to receiver (via the AirPort Express) without losing quality. This cable works as good as I expected. Just for kicks I tested the mini-to-RCA cable, and its ok, but not great (I'm sure it works well for analog). The optical cable is so clear I can hear I can hear each string of the guitar strumming, almost like the artist is sitting right there. No loss of quality, which is exactly what I wanted.

Once I got home, it took all of 30 seconds to install; literally you just plug it in. And yes, please take off the tiny plastic caps! Some people on here apparently think Monster cables are a rip-off, but to be honest, I could care less if radio shack sells something similar for $5. Cheap cables break, sound terrible, and don't last long. These cables look, feel, and sound, high quality. I wanted something that produces great sound, and this does exactly that.

    Hope this helps!

    perfect for airport express

These are definitely what an audiophile would need to hookup his/her airport express to their systems. The digital audio out capability is exactly what I needed to see. More

    simply great!

I had a Belkin stereo connection cable that I took back. This kit has both 3mm to RCA and the optical input cord which works through the airport express and/or your macbook pro. And you get an additional power cord to extend your airport express to 2m of the outlet you plug into. So it is well priced and the quality is superb. Listening to the Christmas music right now... had to write the review. Makes a big difference over the conventional cord I was using. More

Depending on which MacBook you have, on the side is a mini display port, or mini DVI port. You will need an adapter to fit whatever is on the back of the t.v. If your t.v. is a plasma, or LCD, it has a DVI, VGA, HDMI, or component inputs on the back. You will need, for example, a mini display to component adapter. If you want the sound to come through the t.v. as well, you will need one of these connectors as well. With my setup, I have a MacBook air with a mini dvi port. The t.v. that I have has a DVI port on the back with a 3.5mm headphone jack. So the cables that I used were: DVI to DVI adapter, DVI cable for video and a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cord for audio. I hope this helps and wasn't too long winded. More

The input/output jack on your iMac (looks like 2 triangles) functions as both analog and digital outputs. That means that you can use regular RCA cables (Red and White) for your stereo, or a TOSLink adapter if your receiver has digital input. More

This is an awkward situation. Unless you are able to run a cable from your MacBook to these two stereo systems, you'll need to do this: Buy (2) Airport Express base stations. They will connect to your home network (if you don't have a network, you'll need to buy a router). Here is Apple's information on AirTunes, a feature of Airport Express (mentioned above):

AirTunes takes the music from the iTunes library on your computer and sends it wirelessly to any stereo or speakers in your home. All you have to do is plug an AirPort Express into an electrical outlet near those speakers, then connect them with an audio cable.

In iTunes, you can choose which speakers you want your music to play on — in your den, living room, or bedroom. If you have more than one AirPort Express connected to speakers, you can play the same music on all your speakers at the same time to create a whole-house musical experience.
