For all the belly achers
Written by SO from Rexburg

Look, I've read a lot of reviews on batteries for both iBooks and Powerbooks and I'm getting tired with all the belly aching.
For all the people gripin' about their battery life--here is the information that will make your lives more bearable.
First, understand that processor intensive operations will affect your battery life. Your not gonna get 6 hours crankin' Photoshop or Aperture. So keep open programs to a minimum. Meaning one or two at a time.
Next, You can set your energy saver settings to perform better then the "better battery life" setting. I have mine set to dim at 3 minutes and sleep at 6. Check the option to put hard drives to sleep when possible and alter the options tab so that processor performance is set to automatic or reduced. Keep it on your "custom" settings.
Now, turn down the brightness of your display. I keep mine at about half of full brightness when running on battery.
Don't listen to iTunes when on battery power. I always take my iPod and listen to it while working, etc. so that I'm not eating battery life.
Don't use Airport and Bluetooth except when you need to. Turn it on, use it, turn it off.
Finally, CALIBRATE YOUR BATTERY! Do it intitally and then run it down completely once a month or so after that. Laptops are meant for mobility, let it run on battery. I take mine every morning, use it all day, and then charge it at night. (I'm a college student).
Observing these few tips and common sense, (which some seem to be lacking), I HABITUALLY get 6 hours or better (no typo-and my iBook is 2 years old) while using Word, Pages, Safari, Mail, etc.
Hopefully this info will help some folks wisen up on their expectation and use of Lithium-ion technology.

Tips for Extending Battery Life
Written by AS from Dublin

My battery is failing. According to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, the Apple batteries begin to fail after around 400 charges (which is where I'm at now). This means: charge your computer battery as infrequently as possible!! If you're using your laptop as a desktop machine in one place for a period of time, remove the battery and run the computer off the electricity from the plug and your battery won't charge unnecessarily. Don't charge your battery until it is dead, and it will last longer. Battery info for your machine can be found in the "System Profiler." When used properly, Apple batteries will last for quite some time. …More

Not so happy with the Battery
Written by SE from Alexandria

Overall, I think Apple products are incredible. The battery, however, fell well below my expectations. For the first 4 or 5 months, it was great - lasting 5 to 6 hours on each charge. However, I have now had it just under a year and I am lucky to get an hour and a half - and if i am on wireless or watching a dvd - forget it - and hour tops. …More

Easy access to realistic advice needed
Written by RH from Islington

Nothing will give me everything I want but I would appreciate a realistic expectation on all aspects of batteries from Apple. My iBook G4 is now just 4 years old and the battery has a capacity of less than one third of what it had at best, now less than 2 hours life, according to coconutBattery the freeware analyser, and that's in line with what I experience. Some reviews suggest I've done well; the Apple 400 cycles seems a wildly optimistic expectation in my experience - I've achieved 218 to date. I cannot understand why, whether I would have optimised battery use or not, there is such a difference in the number of cycles I have got out of it and Apple's claim - but then reviews suggest batteries have varied in quality to quite some extent. It seems anyone might expect to have to buy a new battery after 2-4 years use. 4 stars. …More

poor enduring performance for 14" ibook battery

tethered to a wall
Written by MW from Savannah
Feb 21, 2009
Although my ibook lasted quite a while i'm very upset that my battery has died. I have had my ibook for 3 years (yes my apple care is up this month!) and I have had to only take it to be repaired once (the logic board was having issues) and the charger broke once while under warranty.
But now my battery has a life of 5 minutes (seriously, I timed it.) I'm not sure how long the battery is really supposed to last but 3 years? come on! And the funny thing is, it went out while I was under warranty, but apple has decided that the battery isn't covered under apple care. They don't actually make the battery and therefore, they don't cover it. A little thing they forgot to mention when they sold me the laptop.
Oh well. I am now tethered to a wall through my ever dying charger... (yes the one apple care replaced about a year ago) …More55 of 81 people found this useful
