    Epic fail...

    • Written by from Acton

Dear Apple, this is the new 5s dock? Really? Why didn't you put a dip in the casing so I can sign in with Touch ID? Very disappointing attention to detail. (Almost as shocking as round the back of the appalling 5c case...) Big hmmmm from me.

    It's fine, on iOS 7

    • Written by from Abergavenny

I was very pleased to see the return of this old favourite (the line-out feature is great) and it's been sorely missed since I picked up an iPhone 5 over a year ago.

So, this works with the 5 and the 5S, but not the 5C (which is too wide for the slot). Noted is the design flaw that doesn't allow you to use touch ID… own goal there Apple!

To clear up other questions too - yes, you need your own USB-Lightining cable; no,it won't work with a case (the slot is tailored for a "naked" iPhone).

The final piece of the jigsaw is the software… would you believe the line-out function of this dock does *not* work with iOS 6. I repeat, if you want to use line-out, you *must* upgrade to iOS 7 first. I know this won't be a problem for most people, but it's worth bearing in mind. A trip to the AppleStore to return a "non-functioning" dock highlighted that little nugget of insider information for us (the Genius didn't know either - it was only through trial & error we worked it out)!

But it's fine. It works as described.

    Line-Out no Line-In ??

    • Written by from Brøndby

This was supposed to be a great product for using at the office.
++Easy charging and listen to music.
-- Unable to to pickup calls from headset (No Line-In)

Why doesn't this have Line-In and Line-Out so it would be possible to use the headset for calls ?

    Utterly pointless.

    • Written by from Warrington

The fact that in order to use this dock, you have to take any case you might have bought (including the expensive Apple one) off each time is just utter stupidity. I get that the design team don't want their creation hidden, but for an item as expensive as the iPhone it is at best naive and more likely just sheer arrogance to demand it. This dock is aesthetics over function, pure and simple - it looks nice but does not perform in a satisfactory way, that is the way in which (judging from other reviews) the majority of Apple customers want it to. Also, the fact that no cable is included makes this poor value for money.

Beware - headphone remote does NOT function with iPhone 5s dock

    • Written by from Leicester

Up to and including the iPhone 4S, the headphone socket was on the top of the phone. You could charge it in an Apple dock while listening via Apple headphones connected directly to the phone and control the volume from the remote on the headphones. If you had a universal dock with remote, you could even listen on headphones via the dock's Line-Out socket and control the volume using the dock remote.

Then came the 'new, improved' iPhone 5, with the Lightning connector and the headphone socket on the bottom, meaning you can't access it when docked! No dock available from Apple, so I eventually I bought a Belkin Charge + Synch Dock with AUX Port. I could listen on headphones via the AUX port, but still couldn't control the volume except via the phone volume buttons.

So, when I saw the iPhone 5s Dock, I though this would provide the solution I was looking for. The lightning connector is all digital, so surely it would be possible to provide a headphone connector on the dock that actually supports the functionality of Apples own headphones? But no, it's still a straightforward 3-conductor Line-Out so doesn't support volume control.

Is it really beyond Apple to make a phone + dock + headphones that each support the functions of the other? If so, can I suggest to Sir Jonathan Ive that the next iPhone design returns the headphone socket to the top of the phone so we can use it when docked? Please?? Pretty please???

    Virtually useless

    • Written by from LONDON

Very disappointed with this product. Bought two, returned two.Touch ID can't be used easily whilst docked and you can not dock with any type of case on the phone including the Apple ones. Given that the Apple case is tricky to get off (due to it being an excellent fit) the dock is impractical. Unless you have nothing to protect your phone avoid this like the plague.

So disappointed at basic design flaws

    • Written by from Halesworth

This is my first iPhone having switched from a Nokia. Having a docking station makes sense - but as other reviewers have said - it will not seat into the dock with ANY form of cover. As the leather cover is a bit awkward to slip off it makes it a bit of a nonsense and the product details should state this explicitly up front - but do not. Additionally, as the phone sits low in the dock the main switch and fingerprint sensor is obscured meaning you have to remove it from the dock in order to do anything with it. Given the level of thought that has gone into the functionality of the phone I'm astonished at this poor design and wish I'd waited to have the benefit of these reviews before I bought it.

    Incompatible with official case

    • Written by from Prague

My wife bought me iPhone 5s with official case and dock as Christmas presents. She was very sad when we unpacked those items and realized that dock and case are not compatible. Our biggest complain goes to the fact that customer must go through reviews to find out products compatibility and even with both products on the same order, customer is not informed about possible issues.

    Disappointing design flaw

    • Written by from Monmouth

This isn't designed for the 5s. The rim of the base sits just above the home button so it is awkward to unlock using the fingerprint sensor. A simple dip in the rim is all that is needed to make it work.

Doesn't work even with a thin case on the phone

    • Written by from Putteridgebury

I wouldn't expect Apple to get this so wrong. I have a fairly slim protective case. The tolerance is non existent. The phone fits in with a very tight fit so that there is absolutely no thickness allowance for a case on the phone.

Sorry APPLE but have already got tired of removing my APPLE case to use this docking station. Poor design in that respect. Have reverted to using plain cable instead.

Volume doesn't adjust and with the Official Apple case it doesn't fit

    • Written by from Andover

Bought this item along with the official Apple case and with the case on my 5s it now doesn't fit in the cradle/dock.

I have also tried to listen to music and charge my phone through this dock and have found that you can't adjust the volume from 98%. For some strange reason as soon as you stick the phone in the dock the volume is set it 98% and you can't adjust it. A bit disappointing really for an Apple Product and quite expensive.

Perfect fit and great product !!

    • Written by from Uxbridge

This is a perfect fit and ideal for a desk or bedside. I'm not really sure why this gets bad reviews because it wont fit with cases. Do you really expect a dock that fits every size and shape of case ? .... perhaps do some research and ask questions before you buy ! ....

It could do with an indentation around the print reader but no great problem for me personally.

Not a lot more I can say other than a well made product that fits an iPhone 5s perfectly and does exactly what its meant to.

Useless if you use a case

    • Written by from Portsmouth

This is well made and has a line out socket but will not accommodate even the thinnest of phone cases. Most people protect their phones in a case, but with this dock you have to remove your phone from it's case...can I be bothered to do that every evening, probably not!

Not sure what the problem is...

    • Written by from London

...I can use the Touch ID just fine. Some reviews sound like the sensor is almost completely obscured — but this is not the case: the dock is barely in the way at all.

Glad the dock is back, I missed it with the iPhone 5.

It looks nice, but flawed in use and overpriced.

    • Written by from Rotherham

I bought an iPhone 5s when they first came and bought one of these for it the week after. Very very happy with the 5s, and I bought the dock so I could keep it in my bedroom on my cabinet as a kind of default resting position for it to be, to charge, good position as an alarm etc.

First things first; it works, as it should. It looks nice too, very clean and simple white design.

That's probably as good as it gets. This thing is very overly priced. It is extremely tiny. The box is about 2x2 inches, a cm or two thick. £25. Despite Apple's ridiculous profits they aren't getting kinder, and it costs them some goodwill. I found out after it doesn't come with even a short lightning cable either.

My biggest pet peeve is its functionality though. Whenever you lift it off the dock, you have to hold down the dock with your other hand. As it fits so tight on the connector, it lifts the dock up with it. You essentially have to pull them apart every time. My Mum has tried lifting it off the dock multiple times but if I ever ask her to pass me my phone, she doesn't anymore as she’s scared she'll break it. Over time I've got better at perfecting the art of removing it from the dock, but it's clunky, and it's not well designed or thought through like every last detail of the iPhone has been.

Clumsy and overpriced are the two words that describe it best. It does its job and it looks nice with the iPhone, and I prefer a dock to not having a dock. It just could do with a lot more of the Apple touch and thoughtfulness on its efficacy.

    Brilliant product!

    • Written by from london

Reading already written reviews confuses me, it is what it is described to be yet people are still complaining.
This is a nice product for my phone to fit in to on my desk which, i then use with my mac. The line out is also very good as it allows me to play it through speakers that use an AUX cable without my phone falling all over the place. Touch ID can be used with this dock although you may have to put your finger on sideways which, i think is only a minor issue. This dock does not allow a case to be used in conjunction with, but then again why would you need to? It is sturdy and certainly wont be falling out and getting damaged!
