    What have you done, Apple?

    • Written by from Pierrefonds

This is the worst laptop accessory invented. First evening with my new MacBook Pro and I've disconnected the magsafe unwillingly over a dozen times. What have you done?? The tiny lateral connector we had until now was perfect.

    Deplorable Quality!

    • Written by from Glasgow

It is completely outrageous that a company like Apple would produce a charging cable like this for its products. This charger, like all other Apple MacBook chargers I have owned, gets far too hot when a device is charging. The cable is also far too week and frays very easily, so much so that my current changer has now stopped working all together. I am now forced to spend over £60 purchase a new charger- you would think that after spending more than £1500 on a laptop that Apple would have the decency to at least sell additional chargers with some concession. This is also not the first time that an Apple charger of mine has become faulty: on my previous Macbook Air the cable broke and I had to purchase a new one, I have also had two official lightning cables which have also broken. I know that there are many others which have experienced similar problems and it is simply not good enough!

Very poor for such an expensive charger

    • Written by from London

I purchased my macbook pro only a year ago. Everything seemed fine for sometime until now the charger has started to play up.

At first I just noticed a little tear in the main cable of the charger and thinking nothing of it, carried on using the product as normal.

However today the charger has stopped working and upon inspection I have seen that the wire has been totally burnt through and charred. I can no longer use it for fear of fire and will be forced to buy a new one.

With these chargers costing £65 each, I should not have to buy one every 16 months.

This charger needs to be redesigned (again) so that it is more robust and less of a hazard for users.

Extremely poor quality, shame on Apple.

    • Written by from SOUTH YARRA

I purchased my Macbook Pro 18 months ago and thought I wouldn't have any problems with it as I've never had a major problem with Macbooks. Just recently the cord decided to not work! It overheats itself whenever I charge my laptop for more than an hour. I expected much more from Apple products, given that I spent a ridiculous amount on money.

    Cable way too weak

    • Written by from Birmingham

The charger is nice in the sense that you can have 2 varied lengths, one where the brick is in the wall and one with the extension attachment. But the cable it self between the brick and the MacBook is way too think. The end closest to the MacBook wears out way too quickly, even if you try your best to look after it. And then they charge you £65 for another one!! I think when I'm spending almost £2,000 on a laptop, I would expect a charger that could last at least 3 years before any signs of wear.

    AWFUL

    • Written by from Lausanne

The magnet on the connector has become very weak and it keeps getting disconnected, even with the slightest tug. I have to reconnect this thing several times a day. Its possibly the worst Apple connector I have even owned.

Planned obsolescence? to the point of being dangerous

    • Written by from london

As mentioned in nearly all the other reviews for this charger, it is prone to overheating and burning out at the wire near the base of the transformer. It's complete bobbins and the price is just ridiculous. Given Apple's usual design and engineering ability, I'm incredibly suspicious that it was built to fail, and this is a way of making money by planned obsolescence. Mine just went (AGAIN) via an overheat, and the discolouration that has appeared on the plastic coating to the wire looks suspiciously like something has been burning.

Very Poor, weak cable and far too expensive

    • Written by from Totnes

I'm very careful with my cables, especially at this price. Even so, with modest use the cable broke at the base, rendering it useless. Not good enough Apple!!

Dangerous product! Apple burying its head in the sand!!!!

    • Written by from Trowbridge

I've always been a big fan of Apple products but this power supply definitely isn't up to their usual standards. Despite clearly having a design fault that causes the cable to short out, split and blacken near the transformer, Apple refuse to take any responsibility for its failure. "You've bent the cable" they tell me - err, yes, at the point where you're supposed to wrap the cable around the little pop out 'hooks' on either side of the PSU as per the manual supplied with the MacBook Pro Retina. Does Apple take responsibility for this? Nope - they fobbed us off and refused to replace the power supply. I guess we should just be thankful that it didn't cause a fire! But then Apple wouldn't have cared about that either, I suspect...

Very, VERY poor show, Apple. Today my love affair with Apple came to a very abrupt end. Your products may look lovely and shiny but it would seem that you don't stand by them once they're outside the warranty period even when it's clear that the design of the product is faulty.

    Same issue

    • Written by from Rugeley

Exactly the same issue as every other user on here. Dreadful quality, overheated and failed adapter. I have no problems with the magnet connection, just the dangerous overheating. I wonder if Apple have had to compensate anybody for a fire damaged home or dead relatives!! Maybe they might give a free adapter!!! Also, very arrogant of a company to only allow you to leave a review if you rate their product with at least 1 star. Shame on you, but of course, you don't care.

ABOUT TO BUY CHARGER NUMBER 3

    • Written by from westcliff-on-sea

Number 3 for this model Mac, my 5th additional apple charger to date. Shoddy piece of equipment. It literally explodes. It's like it has a timer built in set to go exactly every 16 months. You have no choice but to replace it with the same again. If someone else makes a charger for them I'm interested.

    Overheats

    • Written by from PETERBOROUGH

Even in a reasonably well ventilated room, these chargers begin to have overheating problems after about the ~18mo. mark (if not before)

They become *incredibly* hot - as in, you can't even hold the thing. Mine actually continued to work while in this state, until it suddenly shut off and stopped charging my macbook. I was confused, went over to it, and as soon as I touched it... yeah. I realised why it had stopped working. Hot enough you could probably boil an egg on it (and considering its entirely plastic, the fact the exterior can get so incredibly hot says something about how hot the 'core' must be)

Why reinvent something that was nearly perfect already (design wise)

    • Written by from Montreal

I honestly prefer the MagSafe "L" than the 2. I can't have my laptop plugged while using it on my lap with my legs crossed (indian sit), the plug just comes off! I don't know about you but I sometimes work in this position and now I can't unless I unplug my MacBook or put some type of a pillow on my lap so the laptop can rest on it... I guess Apple forgot this test case... To make matters worse, I can't even use the MagSafe 1 with the new retina versions. I now have to always bring the plug with me when I could've easily leave one at work and at home. Instead, they reap us off by making us buy another adapter.

    A Bad Joke

Considering the cost of Apple products, you would expect the cable not to be shredded within 9 months of purchase. A huge disappointment to an otherwise good product.

3rd One Of These Now.... What A Load of Rubbish

    • Written by from Uxbridge

As the title states, this is the third one of these I have had to buy in 2 years. The cable gets disconnected at the end of each day and plugged back in at the start. It does not get unplugged from the mains, and yet still, the plastic covering has deteriorated and is dangerously exposing bare wire at both the magsafe end and the adapter itself. Had exactly the same problem with the original magsafe power adapter on a previous Mac Book Pro I had. Considering this a £3000 bit of kit I use, I expect the power cable to be of a much better design. Personally I will now consider buying in a purpose built linux laptop instead of a Macbook, mainly because Apple refuse to replace this faulty/poorly designed piece of equipment. Got them to replace one about 5 years ago but spent the entire day on the phone before Apple agreed to replace it. It's cheaper for me to buy a new one then waste my time trying to draw blood from a stone. I can see another class settlement being issued on this and so it should. Only rated 1 star as this was the minimum it would allow, more like -5 stars.

Like everyone else says, this power supply is dreadful. Overheats and has stopped working after 16 months. Time for a redesign, methinks... oh, and yeah, a refund would be handy. £65?!?!?!?

    Poor Quality

    • Written by from Decatur

I think Apple needs to talk with Dell on how to build a Power Supply that last. These things were not built to last if you are a business travel and pack it away a lot.

The sad part is Apple won't replace them.
