    Smart Cover in Black Leather

After 12 months wear my blue polythene cover started to show handling marks which could not be entirely removed in the usual way.

Now I have the black leather version. Very smart and wearing well. Comparing the price of the plastic and leather, all round I consider the latter better value and wish I had bought this originally.

    Doesn't offer any protection

Bought this for my wife, despite the eye-watering price, at the same time as her new iPad for Christmas.

However the iPad often gets put down on a wooden coffee table, and in less than two weeks the bottom already has obvious scuff marks. I dread to think what it will look like after two years. Also, she wants to take it in her handbag on the train, which will need all-over protection.

Wish I had bought a case instead.

    Good but not great

It's sleek and protects the screen when closed as you'd expect, the on/off feature is very handy. I've yet to find a cradle that can happily sit with the cover open meaning it has to be removed or allowed to flap about.

I've had my cover for about a year now. A couple of months after I started using it I noticed visible streaking on my ipads screen where the covers folds lie when it's closed. Screenwipes reduce these lines but dont remove them.

My other complaint is that the leather part started to delaminate at the edges after a few months of use as well, mostly at the top and bottom edges and corners rather than the edge I use to flip it open. Not yet fallen to bits but for the added cost of leather I'd have expected that it would have lasted longer than it has.

Would be better if the internal sheets were a fraction shorter to allow for a larger area for added strength in the join or stiched.

Unlikely to replace this with a similar product when it does finally give up. Currently looking at 3rd party options in the meantime.

    Too Expensive

When my new ipad and smart cover arrived i was gobsmacked that this leather cover cost £59. I did not think it looked worth that amount of money and sent it back.
I bought a polyurethane cover instead and much preferred it. The plastic version is easier to clean and a lot cheaper.
I have tried many types of cover and i do love the smart covers for functionality.
I just wish they made more colours, maybe a purple or a beige in polyurethane.
On the whole a fantastically designed product but the leather version is an extortionate price and after seeing it in the flesh i don't think its worth the money.
I would give the polyurethane a 4 star and this only 3.

iPad Smart Cover - Leather - Black

    • Written by from Derby

After having used the cover for while, I love it. The quality of the leather is great and the microfiber lining on the inside of the cover works really well too - however it is quire susceptible to picking up dust. My friend has the polyurethane smart cover for his iPad and I must say that the leather seems much higher quality.

    Pro's -
+ The leather used seems of very high quality and has a very nice feel to it - it looks and feels like a high quality product.
+ Works great in both 'keyboard mode' and as a stand.
+ The open to wake and close to sleep function is a very nice feature, and works very well.

    Con's -
    - Expensive - at £59 for the leather one this is not a cheap cover. I was lucky enough to pick one up for £39 - check out HMV (not sure if they will still be this price, may have been the individual store i purchased it from).
    - Does not offer any protection to the back of the iPad - This is obvious, however worth mentioning. When carrying my iPad in my bag i found that the ‘Griffin Gb01582 Jumper Neoprene Sleeve’ works well with the smart cover.
    - Microfiber lining on the inside is susceptible to picking up dust which is then transferred on to the screen - not a major issue but again, worth mentioning.

Overall, I would recommend this product. The leather cover is of very high quality and does in fact feel ‘smart’ to use. £59 is a lot to shell out for a cover – however I’d recommend spending the extra money and purchasing the leather, it seems much higher quality than the polyurethane equivalent.

It's really good, safe and protective of my iPad 2 screen. But I don't like the smart case, the look of the back is ugly. So that's why I got the smart cover.

    Bit expensive

The design of the cover is great, it works perfectly, allowing you to set it into many different positions depending on what you're working on and I do also like how it takes you straight to the Home Screen. However it is a bit expensive for what it does, I know it's leather, but I'm sure Apple can afford to sell something like this at a cheaper price.

But for the person that rated one star because it broke the iPad when they picked it up... You can easily tell that the magnet isn't exactly a strong one, so it's not surprising that it can't handle the weight of the iPad if left dangling from two tiny magnets.

I bought this case with my ipad2, and at first thought it was great. Until someone picked it up by the case and the magnet didnt hold the iPad. In result it smashed the screen costing me half what I paid for it. Awful design.

I bought the smart cover along with my iPad 2 and it does exactly what it claims to do.It aligns well every time and works great as a stand in both positions.

    Disadvantages:
    1. It leaves a mark on the iPad .
    2. It doesn't protect the back.
    3. It isn't compatible with the apple ipad2 dock.

Having owned the poly cover I was less than impressed with its longevity, so I bit the bullet and apple scored another sale but have to say DO NOT waste money buy this leather cover, much better looking in the flesh, slightly thinner, more plyable, just better. Expensive yes, eye wateringly, but still much better than the poly one. You have been warned

Black leather cover - It does just that

My wife bought me this to go with the the iPad 2 she also bought me.

I love the cover, the quality of the cover far exceeds the cheaper covers and the features of the sleep and wake if just great.

When I start travelling I will be getting a slip cover as well just to give additional protection to the iPad in the bag.

Best decision to buy this THE DAY I bought my iPad

Looked at the other covers in the shop- the poly ones had wear marks on them and pulls in the fabric but the leather ones just looked like they'd been used- not worn. I got this on the day I bought my iPad- best decision as its had cover since day one. It's worn well in 5 months and I've had no issues with it- it doesn't fall off, fits with the plastic cover I have for the back- and folds where it's supposed to when it's supposed to. The only downside I think, is the marks it makes on the iPad glass itself- which is easily wiped off with a microfiber (or a sleeve!). I'd rather pay a bit extra for a decent product than pay twice- once for the cheap version and once for the proper one!

    Brilliant innovation

    • Written by from Leamington Spa

16 of 21 people found this useful

This smart cover is so brilliant an invention that it is almost worth buying an iPad to be able to use it! The leather version is extremely expensive but the leather is of very high quality and it really enhances the iPad, both in terms of appearance and functionality. I love the fact that it turns the iPad on and off when opening and closing and the cunning way it turns into an effective two position stand. it also adds little weight or bulk to the device. There is a slight tendency for the leather version to show some scuff marks but this is probably a naturally effect of the leather and doesn't really detract from its overall appearance.

Looks quite smart n a new unblemished iPad 2. Ok the idea is good - they stick magnetically.
However they fall off all the time too, and when they do your precious iPad becomes a wet bar of soap - sooner or later you will drop it, unprotected and it will break.
Maybe you won't but mine did.
