I bought one of these with my iphone 4 about 4 months ago to protect the phone. When I took it off two weeks ago to check dust etc I found it had scratched up all the aluminum band around my phone, needless to say i wasn't best pleased!! But, when i took it in to the genius bar they said it was under warrentee and gave me another. Problem solved but I certainly wont use another one even though some of my mates have used them and they are fine, I'll probably get a 100% rubber or leather cover next time to avoid the plastic rubbing aginst the band.

    Bumper not durable

    • Written by from Dollar

This is my second black bumper. Both have started to break up within 6 months. This second has cracked at the base. They do scratch the case. I resent spending £26 for this poor quality product.

    BUM-per

    • Written by from London

I got this as part of the free case program - i never had signal issues but took advantage of the free case.

arrived i was impressed with the look and fit - 3 months later its ruined.

its dented and cracked just from loose change in my pocket - the rubber has split and separated from the plastic and sadly apple will not change it despite it only being 3 months old.

I'm an architect and have complete respect for products such as this but I’m really disappointed with this.

The Store said they won’t change bumpers more than 30 days old and they are not covered by the 12 moth hardware guarantee which is rubbish cause the website say they are – I will be going back with a print out of this and reminding them of their responsibilities but I fear I will be doing this every 3 months until I get the next gen iPhone.

    Very poor quality.

Not tight enough, scratches iPhone significantly. Choice is your, either Bumper and antenas are scratched or no Bumper and possibility to have back/front scratched.

    I would not recommend it.

    This will scratch your iPhone!

    • Written by

Got this case as part of the free case program and it has been fitted for 6 months. Whilst it has undoubtedly protected the phone the rubber part is now separating from the hard plastic portion and the entire metal surface of my iPhone is now scratched and looks very unsightly. The case is very easy to fit and remove but lets in dust and grit too thus causing the scratching.

Scratched the metal antenna around my phone and the plastic where you connect to your computer has already cracked all the ay through.. It was free but is definately not worth paying for and definately not what one would expect from Apple.

    Why so much negativity?!?

    • Written by from London

The bumper is a must have for any iPhone owner:

    1) It prevents the signal drop (without it I drop around 50% of my calls, with it on I lose less than 1%).

    2) It protects the screen (the front and back of my iPhone4 are still in perfect condition because the bumper stops them touching any surfaces.

    3) It does cause some minor 'scuffing' to the aluminum band, but you have the bumper on, so you can't see it and I'm a believer in using items and not trying to keep them in perfect condition.

    4) It fits my Sony earphone connector perfectly (maybe better than the Apple earphones even), but I can understand why some people may find this annoying. However, Apple make the product as an official accessory for their product, so why shouldn't it be designed for their earphones?

    5) Great button controls. The metal volume and power buttons are excellent, not to mention the silent switch slot, I never accidently switch it now like with other manufacture's cases.

    6) You will struggle to fit 3rd party (eBay bought) USB cables with the bumper on, which is a downside, but again Apple have designed it to work with their own items. The problem is more that Apple charge too much for replacement cables, which in my house last about 2 months.

    7) Most importantly the bumper protects the iPhone4 from general bumps and knocks.

Everyone I show my bumper to wants one - I'm so glad I got it and it is well worth the £26 price tag. If mine ever breaks or I lose it I will buy a new one, no hesitation.

Take care of grit inbetween bumper and iPhone Metal

    • Written by from EDINBURGH

I bought this bumper at the time the antenna gate was on - I have had it on for about 6 months now and not really taken the bumper off the phone. I thought it was great. However I ahve just removed the bumper to remove the SIM and find that little bits of dust have got in between the bumper and the aluminium surround and marked the aluminium surround. Its marked the phone at the corners quite badly - be aware. Your may be doing the same thing.
I work in an office and never out much in my pockets at all.

This case does NOT scratch the phone

    • Written by from Bromley

Rubber and plastic does not scratch metal!

People's phones are being scratched by hard debris getting trapped between the phone and the case and this is a problem with all cases, not just this one.

The point about a case is that you don't take it off, so why are people constantly removing their cases to look for scratches?

    It's a good product.

Great looking, great fit. Don't ask how but I had my iPhone fall from the first floor of my house. I wasn't very confident that the bumper had protected it but on retrieval the phone hadn't a scratch on it. The only damage I could find was a small dint on the plastic strip of the bumper. Very acceptable

    More aesthetic than protection

    • Written by from Rowland's Castle

I got my Bumper with the Apple Case Programme. If you're one to use third-party equipment or the iPhone 4 Dock then don't bother with this. The case will begin to wear and split as you keep removing it. If you're happy using the standard earphones and a dock cable then the Bumper should be fine. As for protection I've never dropped my iPhone so couldn't comment on how much protection the Bumper provides you.

Got this case as part of the free bumper case program. It looked nice for a month but when I took it off it had made marks on the metal antenna.

This case is an overpriced piece of garbage. Look for an altenative that Apple has not had a hand in manufacturing!!!

    Not impressed

    • Written by from San Francisco

I received a black rubber bumper for my iPhone 4. Although it looks nice and doesn't scratch my iPhone like others have commented, it has one big problem. It doesn't allow the USB connecter to fit into the port properly for charging. I have to take the bumper off in order to keep the connector from slipping out. The hole that was cut for the USB connector wasn't properly made. As a result of constantly putting on/removing the bumper, it's now torn around where the hole is - after only 5 months of use. Would be nice if Apple had better quality control for their accessories.

Not good for most 3rd party headphones

    • Written by from LONDON

Although the issue of scratching & loosness is a concern, the case does do it's job in acting like a 'bumper' - just as it's name suggests, it is not a case that has a front & back, it surrounds the rim of the device just like a bummer acts as a ring around a bumper car at the fairground.

I would combine this with a sock to act as a 'case', but I'll most likely need to look for a new solution as the case hampers one of my major uses...

...Not only is this device going to be my new phone, but it is also replacing an old iPod. I like to use 3rd party headphones with my iPods, but alas the hole in the bumper does not allows for slightly fatter headphone jacks. It looks like the bumper was designed with only Apple's white headphones in mind.

As I do not wish to advertise to the world (and the thugs that populate it) that I am walking around with a brand new shinny iPhone in my pocket, I would like to use black headphones with it (also, who on Earth wants to use white headphones with a black iPod/iPhone?!). My Sennheiser headphones don't make the connection because the rubber casing around the jack is too big for the hole in the bumper. Judging by the images of many headphones from Sennheiser, Sony, et all, it looks like most will fail to fit the hole. This is a major downer for me.

In principle, these are great items and you will love one, for a while but....my first one went loose and baggy. I bought another (!) This one has just snapped between the volume control buttons and it is less than 6 months old. Naively, I thought Apple would replace this but I'm totally shocked that they won't. So, £55 spent on iPhone bumpers was madness. Spend less money on cheap bumpers and then you won't care when they fail.
