Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
Doesn't work with data projectors
Written by DC from London
Jan 13, 2009
This adaptor is very disappointing. I found that it works fine with some small (20 inch) Samsung monitors that have a VGA input but it doesn't work with any of the data projectors I have in my university department so I can't use my new MacBook Pro (unipart aluminium case) for Powerpoint presentations, which was one of the main reasons for buying the laptop. The problem seems to be that the laptop senses the data projector ( and scales down the laptop display to VGA) but the projector doesn't detect the laptop (and so fails to display the image from the laptop screen). My old MacBookPro (Intel core duo) works fine with all data projectors (using the DVI to VGA adaptor) and I'm now in the silly position of having to use the old laptop for all travel (conferences etc) plus teaching in the university. The wonderful looking new MacBook Pro has to stay at home. Apple needs to issue a firmware fix or a better adaptor as soon as possible.

This adapter does not work with my Samsung TV/Monitor and many others have said the same thing. If you have a Samsung TV/Monitor, the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter works perfectly

I've got one of these to connect my Macbook Pro to my Samsung TV but as with everyone else, the TV doesn't recognise the output from the laptop. (It works find with my Dell laptop and Windows XP).
The result is that the adapter is useless.87 of 122 people found this useful

samsung problems
Written by BM from Staines

Bought this for a Sony monitor which it works perfectly with.
I thought I'd give it a go on my Samsung TV. With my original cable that I had for my TV it would not work, so I checked the pins in the cable. I noticed there was one missing which was not missing in my Sony cable. When I use the cable with all pins it works perfectly with my Samsung TV.
Make sure you have a full compliments of pins in your VGA lead is my advise and you are unlikely to have any problems.28 of 28 people found this useful

This does work with data projectors
Written by SW from Sheffield

Don't be put off by previous reviews saying this adapter doesn't work with data projectors. I've tried it with my new MacBook Pro and can confirm it works with at least 3 different brands of data projector cnnected via VGA type (3 rows of 5 pin) connectors. There may have been a problem, presumably now fixed.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
Worked perfectly with my Macbook Unibody and Samsung R8 TV.
Written by ES from Plymouth

I don't usually write reviews but I feel that some people might be getting misinformed by some of the reviews already posted.
This adapter worked perfectly with my Samsung R8 LCD tv. I plugged it in, the TV detected my Macbook and it worked straight away (and looked awesome!).
I can only speak from my experience here with the combination of using a Macbook Unibody and Samsung R8, I don't doubt that this adapter might not work with some Samsung tv's, but given that the R8 is very popular model I thought I'd better mention how well this adapter worked for me.24 of 25 people found this useful

Need to project using VGA? hold off on MacBookPro
Written by SR from Morgan Hill

As a previous reviewer said, it's unclear whether it is this DtoA converter (it's far more than an adapter, folks) or the latest Mac Book Pro's video hardware, but there are problems with Mini DisplayPort to VGA.
I teach for a living, and never know what I will find in the classroom. This was the wrong purchase for me, as it is completely unreliable with VGA projectors. If you need to hook up using VGA, wait until Apple can address this problem or make another purchase.
Sad, because my prior Apple laptop experience has been next to flawless. I hope they can fix it soon or I will be asking them to take this purchase back.

Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter review!
Written by DS from swindon
Apr 27, 2009
Hi,
I have recently purchased this product, and I must say, despite all the bad reviews, it worked perfectly for me. I used it with my LG PG4000 (50 inch) TV and it worked perfectly.
Anyway, if you want my opinion, I recommend you buy it, if you are thinking about purchasing this product, well worth the £20 you have to pay for it.17 of 20 people found this useful

Great

I would have preferred MiniDisplay to HDMI, but as it doesn't look like happening for a while, VGA is the next best thing for me (I do not have a DVI slot on my Telly).
I think I will tweak it to hopfully give me the best quality, but on first impressions I am liking what I see! HD looks good and the colours are vibrant,
My only negative is that it doesn't quite fill the screen (Sony Bravia 26"). I have 1 inch or so either side of the screen which is black. Does any one know how to change it? Perhaps a little tweaking will help?!?
On the whole very impressed!13 of 14 people found this useful

Works Perfect
Written by JF from Athy

Bought this cable when I was buying my MacBook Pro. It works perfectly with my tv. When I connect it to my Mac, the Mac automatically changes to the correct display resolution for my tv. When I disconnect the cable, it automatically changes back to the correct display resolution for my MacBook Pro screen, very simple indeed
All the negative reviews of this product are from people who bought this cable for the wrong purpose or bought the wrong cable.10 of 11 people found this useful

After reading other peoples reviews, I was a bit weary about buying this adapter, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway, turns out it works perfectly, took me a while to figure out how to use my second screen with my MacBook closed, but apart from that, i really like this adapter, it even works at 1920x1080 at 60hz.

It is not made clear in the product description that a mini display port is not the same as a Mini DVI port so it will not connect to a Macbook. You need the Mini DVI port to VGA adapter for this, as I learned to my cost.

How to Make It Work! (on samsung T220 at least)
Written by KH from Vaerloese
Mar 5, 2009
SOLUTION: get a hold of a bunch of normal VGA cables and connect them directly to the display (this is of cause impossible with roof mounted projectors), try all the cables until you find one that works and then hold on to it with you life! This will sort out the problem, especially for those with Samsung monitors.
For those interested here is the EXPLANATION WHY:
I got myself a Samsung T220 monitor and out of the box it didn't show a picture using the Apple MiniDisplayport -> VGA adaptor (also tried the apple mini displayport -> DVI, didn't help either, but others have reported it to work).
After hours of reading on forums it turns out that the problem is that some monitor and projectors require VGA pin 5,6,7,8 and 10 (or a combination hereoff) to be grounded or at least connected. Normally this is not a problem - therefor the cable manufacturers dosent always ground these, and sometimes even connect these pins. In my understanding Apple could have solved much of the problems by making grounding these pins directly in the adaptor. Anyhow, the solution is as described above; get a hold of a bunch of normal VGA cables and connect them directly between the monitor and the VGA adaptor, when you find one that work because it got all the grounds and conenctions hold on to it with your life! As a rule of thumb when looking for a VGA cable: it needs to be thick as this is a sign it got all 15 wires inside the cable.
Hope it helps.

Problems, be careful!
Written by DA from MADRID

This adapter has problems. Maybe the apadter or maybe the macbooks. When I plug it to my toshiba 23 TFT display it doesnt recognize the right res. and when it does (primary display) it flashes to black (very weird) from time to time: useless for a business presentation. Waiting for Apple's answer. First see the forums, before buying:
Do not buy it until a fix.

This works perfectly with a Panasonic TX-32LZD81 freesat LCD TV. Great for catching up TV programs or just large screen surfing. Don't make the mistake of getting the larger Display port connection, this fits the old Macbook and some desktops.
