Apple iPhone 3G Dock
No AV out from this dock
Written by GB from CAMBRIDGE
Jul 31, 2008
Warning - I bought one of these and a new Apple Composite AV cable to dock and connect my iPhone to an in-car entertainment system for audio and video output. The cable on its own works great but the dock BLOCKS both the video and audio outputs from the 30-pin connector on the back so nothing works.
On the Apple website it does say that video output is not supported from this dock, but mentions nothing about blocking the audio from the 30-pin connector too! And neither the store staff nor the packaging told me any of this anyway.
I have no clue why Apple would not just pass through the 30-pin connection from the phone to the back of the dock, but they don't. Apparently the Universal Dock does allow AV through, but then it does block the microphone and speaker on the bottom of the iPhone so it's useless for speakerphone calls - and it will cost me another £10 for another power adapter I don't need (got one with the phone and one with the AV cable so far).
So that's £50 spent on two accessories which don't work together but are both 'compatible' with iPhone 3G, and fail to do the job a £2.99 cable from Maplin would do if Apple hadn't encyrption-protected the AV output on the iPhone.
Not great, and I speak as a long-term Apple fan.559 of 667 people found this useful

It's another £10 to buy a cable!?!
This should come with a cable, end of story.150 of 170 people found this useful

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
No AV out
Written by CR from London

Bought this dock from the apple store on Regent Street, along with the 'Component AV Cable'. I even spoke to a member of staff to check that everything would work OK. When I got it all set up at home I found that the cable worked fine when connected straight to my iPhone 3G, but it would only charge via the USB connection when in the dock. The audio and video outputs do not work.
I'm astounded that apple can make a product that does not provide the expected. Surely the dock connector would simply pass through the data it is receiving from the ipod/iphone sitting in the dock.
Apparently not.

A 16GB iphone doesn't fit!

The iphone keeps jumping out of the dock, and you have to press hard, too hard onto the iphone to get it into the dock, then it quite literally jumps back out again...Not impressed.

Thats right just like the reveiws tell you, the phone dont fit! I can't believe that i didn't read the reviews before buying DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS ME!!!
The iphone doesn't fit in properly, you really have to force it in and even then most of the time it still jumps out. A complete waste of money, unless you like adapting plastic mouldings with a sharp knife/1 of 2 people found this useful

Wish I'd read all the reviews first

As many have said, one of these should really have been included in the box, but at £19, I guess I can live with that.
However, what I can't live with is the fact that it doesn't include the USB cable!! I bought two of these (one for home, one for work), thinking that I'd then keep the cable that came with the iPhone for travel use. But I'm now going to have to spend even more on a couple of cables for the docks!
Not good guys. I can't think of any other cradle or dock type of product that doesn't at least include its own connecting cable.
So...lose one star for not including a dock with the iPhone in the first place and lose two more for not including the cable with the dock! Bad Apple!!123 of 142 people found this useful

Apple iPhone 3G Dock
A bit too compact
Written by BD from Grimsby

Overall, this dock does what it says on the tin. However, its dimensions are such that if you have your iPhone in a case, even just a skin, it won't fit in the dock. I have to remove the skin every time. This defeats the object a little as I wanted to play the iPod whilst sat at my desk but then pick the iPhone out of the dock when I go walkabout, without a load of hassle disconnecting audio plugs, etc. I don't have to do that but I do have to put the skin back on to avoid damage whilst the iPhone is in my pocket, so not quite the convenient gadget I envisaged.

Unreliable dock connection
Written by JS from BRISTOL
Jul 28, 2008
I used my iPhone 3G for a couple of days before the dock arrived, and I had no problems at all. Since using the dock, I've had kernel panics, and on at least 2 occasions iTunes has warned me that the iPhone device was removed whilst syncing. It seems the dock doesn't always make a good connection to the iPhone, it doesn't lock into position. It's always bad to remove a mounted device during data transfer, and in effect that is what the dock is doing with it's unreliable connection. I am very concerned about data corruption.
I think the dock could be designed better - to make a locked connection for better reliability, and a release button to avoid problems with the dock lifting up from the desk when trying to remove the iPhone.
On the plus side, I can understand Apple not including the dock with the 3G - it's a fair way to keep the cost of the iPhone so low, many people may not need a dock, especially if they use one of the many cases that are available. I made a choice not to add to the bulk of my iPhone by using a case, and therefore benefit from the convenience of simply placing the iPhone into a dock, rather than hunting for the cable that may have been burried or slipped off the back of the desk.27 of 33 people found this useful

Doesn't do things you'd expect it to
Written by AH from Canterbury

1. It doesn't stay still when you use the iphone whilst it's in the dock
2. When you plug in the conector that also has the iphone headset, he headset doesn't charge. To get it (and the iphone) to charge simultaneously, you have to connect straight to the iphone; so the dock is redundant.
3. I've got the silicon case for my iphone. I have to take it off to fit it in the dock.

Apple Iphone Dual Dock
Written by JH from BRIDGNORTH

A little disappointed that having bought 2 dual iphone docks for the original iphone and headset I cannot use them with the new 3G phone, infact unless i use the lead that came with the headset i cannot charge the items together. Why is this Apple? Are we not going to have a dual dock for the new 3G phone?

Good but could be a lot better very easily.
Written by JL from Rochdale

This is perfect for what it says. It doesn't bother me that it doesn't come with a cable or it wasn't included with the phone. The following two points bother me because I see no reason why they cannot be solved.
1. Make the base a lot heavier. This needs to sit on a desk without being influenced by the weight of the cable. I should be able to lift the phone in and out without moving the dock or needing to hold it down.
2. Make a black one. I understand that a lot of Apple's products are white such as the Apple Macs and some of the iPhone and iPods but you now also do a lot in black. The most popular iPhone colour where I live is black and my iPod touch is also black as are most. It wouldn't cost any more either.
You have a great product, you can make the accessories so much better by watching people use them.79 of 85 people found this useful

Be careful !
Written by NP from London

Got a protective case on your iPhone ? Then this won't work. You need a UNIVERSAL dock which also comes with a remote. It's an easy mistake to make and even Apple Store Staff get confused. So the 3G Dock has it's limitations so make your choice very carefully.

Should have been provided with the iphone!
Written by AM from BROUGH
Jan 26, 2009
Does what it should, great quality, but I am annoyed that it wasn't in the box with my iphone and the price is ridiculous considering that it isn't provided with it's own power adapter or USB cable. Most people don't keep their dock by the computer where they sync their iphone, therefore I'm now going to have to buy another USB cable at the cost of £10 plus p&p because I don't want to be plugging and unplugging one USB cable from one room to another. Why don't Apple just put the price of the phone up and provide these items in the box.
I have only given it 3 stars because of the price and the above issues, the product itself is excellent.56 of 61 people found this useful

No USB cable in the box

I bought this to use at work, so I could use the charger that came with it at home. Now I need to buy another USB to ipod cable for £15 pounds including postage, so in the end it costs you £35-40 for a dock and cable. Disappointed.

Small but important omission; Apple Bluetooth headset owners please read
Written by AG from Tetbury
Sep 11, 2008
So I'll start out by agreeing with the comments below. Annoying that the dock's not in the iPhone retail box. A shame that the dock's retail box hasn't got a cable in it. As a dock though, it does what it says on the box.
My little observation that may be of value to others is that you cannot use this with the Bluetooth Travel Cable (aka the sync cable with a charging point for the Apple Bluetooth headset). In the absence of the dual dock for the 3G phone, I had the bright idea to put the headset cable into the dock on the assumption that both the phone and headset would charge. Oh no. Some bright spark has the dock/cable connected in such away that the moment the cable is connected to the dock power to the headset is cut off.
Summary: the only way to charge a 3G iPhone and Apple Bluetooth headset together is to use the cable alone (or take a dremmel to the dual dock for the original iPhone).33 of 38 people found this useful

"No more reaching behind the computer to plug it in!" - All very well but there has never been any 'reaching behind the computer to plug it in' before as the iPhone used to come with a dock included!
Anyway, does the job exactly as it should but over the last couple of years apple really has started taking the **** with accessories. The iPod used to come with a charger but that was also removed.31 of 37 people found this useful

Written by SS from Atherton

Pretty awesome, but for £19 you should get a USB lead with it - I'd pay £25 if it came with another mains adaptor.
No qualms about it not coming in the box - not everybody wants one, but would be great if Apple produced an extra long usb lead - mine goes behind the bed to charge at night but is just not long enough! have had to put yet another extension lead in to accomodate new shiny iPhone.14 of 16 people found this useful

Bought it presuming that my iphone 3G would fit in the dock along with an incase casing around the phone, however it doesn't. As a general dock it is fine but shame they don't specify that it will not fit with a case around.

Must Have Accessory - Why Wasn't It In The Box, Apple?
Written by FN from FRASERBURGH
Jul 14, 2008
At the weekend, I went into town to TRY and find an iPhone 3G which I wanted so much. After much trailing round the various O2 and Carphone Warehouse shops I eventually found one... Great!
So, I took it home, opened the box and started having a little rummage around and what did I find? Well... everything apart from a dock. I know how useful these docks can be, my sister owns the first generation iPhone and its serves its purpose as a great little stand for using while at the computer (it saves the back getting scratched too!)
I had to get one. So back into town I went, and (luckily) the Carphone Warehouse had them :) It's a sturdy piece of kit which is deceptively heavy (in a good way) and you won't find yourself worrying about if it is a safe place ti keep your phone.
All-in-all, a must have for iPhone owners... But it should have been included in the box!627 of 677 people found this useful
