Doesnt need to be digital or a HDTV

    Written by GH from KIDLINGTON

    Nov 2, 2007

This cable works with any tv with a component (Red, Green, Blue) connection. This type of connection is entirely analog. whether you need a HD or SD tv depends on the ipod your using, for instance the iPod Classic outputs 480p therefore a HDTV is required, but an iPod Touch uses 480i which will work on a standard definition tv.
Check your tv for the component connections (most hdtv's have them) and whether your tv supports the type of picture given by your ipod, (480i or 480p). p.s all tvs support 480i (576i in the US).

    Simple

    Written by DT from Manchester

    Picture Quality - Great
    Soud Quality - Great
Extra Charger Block - Good extra
Remember - Only works with a HD TV so if you dont have one, dont buy it, simple as that.
Music - Works perfectley with any Stereo
But - First check the back of you HD TV if it has component plugs (Red, Green and Blue for pic) then the Red and White for sound, it will work, if you HD TV has a VGA, DVI or HDMi input it wont, but if it has the Red and White for sound you will be able to play sound but not picture. There is still hope in the form of converters to convert component to, VGA, HDMi or DVI.

    For Digital Televisions only!

    Written by IR from Selsdon

    Oct 10, 2007

I bought myself a 160gb Apple ipod classic and after finding out the Av cable I has didn’t work for the classic I was advised to buy this cable.
This one however only works on digital televisions, notice the different colours of the ports (red, blue and green). Rather than the Red, yellow and white that you usually have.
Check you own TV first to make sure that it is compatible.

Clarifying a few bits of misinformation from other reviewers...

    Written by RR from WOKINGHAM

    Sep 11, 2008

This is a Component video cable that carries an analogue signal to any TV that has a component video input, whether that be a SDTV, HDTV, 'analogue TV', 'digital TV', 'full HD' or 'HD Ready' is irrelevant but your TV must have a Component input (Green, Blue and Red connections) for video and RCA input (Red and White connectors) for audio. This is not the same as and should not be confused with the common Composite video input (single Yellow connector) found on just about every TV set!
If your iPod outputs a 480p/576p signal (both of which are Standard definition) then your TV will need to support Progressive scan input!
If your iPod outputs a 480i/576i signal then it will work with any TV. Generally 480i for US sets and 576i for UK. Although most modern TVs support both and automatically switch.
    Hope that clears things up.

    A Great Buy

    Written by MR from Leicester

Purchased the component cable today, what a brill product, connected the red, blue and green plugs to my HD TV and the red and white audio plugs to my 5.1 surround system, all works fine, the downloaded videos, music and podcasts have fab picture quality and the sound is awesome through the cinema system. Price is high but the quality is more than worth it.

    Does as it says

Works as expected with my 42" Panasonic Plasma and my iPhone 3G. Picture quality is not as good as DVD but is much better than expected and definitely watchable. Video, music, Youtube, photos all show OK.

Cable seems to be well made and although the price seems high, you get a charger, and full AV/USB cable for less than the cost of a separate charger and USB only cable.

High quality cable - works well - good value if you consider the charger is supplied as well.

But as stated by others - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A TV WITH COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT before buying - if you are not sure buy the composite cable!

    Audio/Video for iPod Classic/iPhone Sorted!

    Written by TF from HARROW

    Apr 4, 2008

This product compliments both my iPod Classic and my iPhone. I can connect both to my HD TV to output video at 576i which looks amazing if the original video on your iPod/iPhone is decent enough quality. I can also connect both iPod & iPhone to my stereo using the Audio connectors which work a treat. The charger is very useful to keep both juiced up.

Note you have to connect this cable directly into your iPod Classic or iPhone - you need the Apple universal dock if you wish to sit your iPod/iPhone in a dock and control playback/volume functions using the Apple remote.

All in all it serves to provide excellent audio and video output to your stereo and TV. Your TV does not have to be HD, but must have the component (Red, Green, Blue sockets) if it is to play on SD TV's.

Read GH's review for important info

    Written by JL from Aberystwyth

    Apr 2, 2008

Perfectly good product, but as GH says the ipod you have will dictate whether or not it works for you as much as whether or not your tv has component inputs.
If you have ipod touch you're fine with any tv with component inputs, otherwise you do need a tv/projector capable of handling a progressive frame rate, such as an 'hd ready' tv. Nothing to do with the tv being 'digital'.

GH is wrong on one thing though, 480 is ntsc (us), 576 is pal (uk)

    Tremendous quality

Written by RT from NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

Used with my iPod Touch the image quality this cabling produces is pin sharp. With converted DVD's aspect ratio's are preserved. Sound quality is excellent routed either through my amplifier or directly through my TV.
Initially I thought this is a little pricey. However considering a power brick is part of the package and how much good quality component cabling can cost I don't think so now.

    Not a good buy

    Written by BH from London

    Mar 11, 2008

It’s almost impossible to feel good about accessories like these: not only do they represent poor values relative to their predecessors, but their very release constitutes a breach of the trust iPod owners have had in Apple for the past several years. No one wants to buy the same accessories twice, or be forced into buying outrageously expensive cables even once, but new iPod buyers will find that’s exactly what Apple’s expecting with these parts; for the first time, those interested in buying a more affordable, Remote-less Universal Dock should consider third-party options, as so should those who want less expensive cables without power adapters.

    Works as advertised

    Written by PL from EXETER

    Dec 4, 2007

Works well with my TV and stereo. Pity you can't use it through the iPhone cradle to keep it upright when connected to the TV.

The negative review above that complains that it doesn't connect to their non-digital tv probably needs to exchange it for the Composite version of this connector, possibly coupled with a SCART to Composite connector (about a fiver from Maplins).

    includes international plug

    Written by SM from Brighton

    Jan 1, 2008

I was reluctant initially to fork out this much for a cable, but after finding both an english and and international plug connector (2 prong round euro-style) in the box along with the usb power adaptor - I was won over.
The shape of the connectors, despite being very stylish, were in use, however, difficult to remove once attached to the back of a TV - for example. Some raised pattern on them, or perhaps a cut out ring could have helped provide some grip (otherwise I reckon people will resort in frustration to pulling on the wires themselves).

Frustrated iPod Nano (3rd Gen) User

    Written by RA from Surprise

I bought the 3rd season of LOST and hoped to watch it on my TV but can't. I bought the component AV cable and it does not work on my Sony Wega SDTV. The sound is great but I get a double image on my screen in black and white. It is 480i...I will be returning this product to the retail location.

iPods and iPhones with standard definition TVs

    Written by JM from Chelmsford

    Jun 15, 2008

I was thinking of buying an Apple TV until I realised that my iPod Classic could connect to a TV. As I have a standard TV with SCART sockets I bought an adapter box from JS Technology in Scotland. Alas, the iPod Classic has 480p or 576p outputs which won't work. However, the iPod Touch and iPhone will work with their 480i or 576i outputs (as will the Apple TV), so I'll be in the queue for an iPhone on 11th July!

As usual, a beautifully designed and manufactured piece of equipment, even though it's just a cable.

What are you people on about?!?!

    Written by JU from Norwich

    Nov 23, 2007

This cable works on both HD and regular TV's when used with an iPhone or non-iPod Classic as the output is 480i.

You must however have the component cable inputs on your TV for this cable to function, if you don't you can buy the regular RCA AV cable which has the regular red/blue/yellow 3-lead setup.

I have just got this cable and have been using it with my iPhone without any dramas at all on both my 50" Plasma HDTV and my non-HDTV projector ... Both work great!!

    Picture: Upto 42" 9/10 - Over 42" 8/10
Sound: 9/10 - Good Quality Stereo Sound

Overall it gets a big 9/10 which is a good rating!! The price is VERY reasonable considering this is a genuine Apple product ... Big thumbs up :-)

    Good, but!

    Written by IH from Leeds

    Jun 19, 2009

Works well on video, but be aware that some tv's do not support sound without a video signal, so you may not be able to play music without playing a slide show. Not the fault of the cable, but the way the tv is designed.
Not made clear in the instructions, I had to search the net to be sure.

Does exactly what it says on the box, quality of the output is excellent, and inclusion of the USB mains chargers is a bonus.

The only gripe is I feel it's a touch on the pricey side.

This AV lead doesn't support video output on version 3.1.2 of the iPhone which is the reason that I bought it. Until this bug is fixed it's only worth one star.
