  • Apple USB Power Adapter

    Absolutely Useless!

    Written by GB from Norwich

    Feb 25, 2008

The adaptor is over priced and totally unsuitable for the UK market despite what Apple says. It comes in two parts and these have to be fitted together. It is a push fit and the two parts do not lock together. This means it cannot be used with a normal UK wall socket as the adaptor piece (which takes the USB cable) drops to the floor as there is nothing to hold it in place.

I have been told by Apple that the adapter is designed to be used with a floor extension socket. How many of us remember to pack one of these when we are travelling and away from a computer? Given the various designs of phone chargers these days surely Apple could design something that is more fit for purpose. In the meanwhile I can go away but when the battery runs out on my iPod, that's it!

    Good quality but too expensive

    Written by AL from Carnforth

    Jul 19, 2008

This is a great product - small, unobtrusive, and well-made.

But it's twenty pounds you're never going to see again, so if you already have one it's a waste of money. It's a simple case of charging too much (no pun intended) for a product. If they were ten pounds I'd buy two more, but I'm not paying twenty for another one to use at work, much as I'd like the added convenience of another.

    Variable responses

    Written by TB from Sunderland

    Sep 13, 2008

    1) This is expensive compared to other USB chargers.
    2) My pieces fit together so loosely that I could not use a wall socket until I had added a paper-clip to jam the interlocking mechanism more firmly. I note that others have reported that their pieces fit together firmly - sounds as if it may be being sourced from different manufacturers - i.e sloppy quality control (irritating given the price).
    3) I would have expected a range of adapters to come, rather than just the British fitting.
Overall, although useful (hence the second star), this particular product does the Apple image a diservice.

I agree with GB's review. The two pieces of my adaptor do not fit together firmly so I cannot plug it into a wall socket.

    Should come with the ipod

    Written by MA from Romford

    Feb 13, 2008

This is a necessary accessory for any ipod as charging by computer connection takes so long. Therefore, it should really be included in the box with the ipod at the time of purchase.

    GOOD but BAD

    Written by TO from Lee-Green

i think it is a very good product, but why doesn't it come with the ipod itself, when i charge my ipod with my computer the USB always disconnets and the whole process takes hours and the only other way to chare it is to buy an ipod speaker and a good quality one is very expensive

    Why not international adaptor?

Written by PW from Sun City

    Feb 20, 2008

I love this adaptor, but surely with such a portable device as iPod, a choice of plug configurations would be sensible. The UK (SEAsia is same) plug is SO-O-O huge compared to say a US or Australia/NZ plug. I'd like to be able to buy the other, smaller, plug configurations to go on the adaptor (like the product photo!!) to make it truly international travel-friendly. PWR

Fine plug, very useful product, but come on Apple, £19 is outregeous, gadgets such as this should be no more than £10.

Limited options for the UK store

    Written by FM from LONDON

    Apr 22, 2009

Most of us agree that Apple accessories are a bit overpriced, so I wonder why Apple does not include this particular accessory with a US or European plug option. By doing this, one would be able to buy this particular accessory and reuse the endpoint with one's MacBook charger without having to dish out the 30 quid for the entire world adapter thingie.

Fab but should come with the iPod by default

    Written by SJ from Malton

    Oct 10, 2008

This was the first accessory I ever bought for my iPod (4th Gen Nano). Just the thought of having to turn on my laptop with it's super slow start-up just to recharge my iPod stressed me out!

The power adaptor plugs straight into the mains power (3 pin plug) and connects to the same USB cable that came with your iPod. It comes with an additional cable which is great to have a spare.

I've found recharging with this adaptor is actually quicker than recharging through the USB port on the computer. It's also great to keep your iPod fully charged if you're using it connected to an external sound system or the TV.

Others have complained of their connections being loose, but mine fit snuggly with no worry of them falling out and the adaptor is robustly made.

I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the price. I feel, like others, this should come bundled with any iPod over £100 by defualt. It makes sense as there may not be a comuter to use to charge with, whereas this can be used at home, at work, at your friends house, hotel room, etc.

    Essential Adapter

    Written by JW from PETERLEE

    Apr 25, 2008

This adapter should have been included with the iPod Touch and the cable could be a lot longer.

This adapter is essential if your away from a usb power capable device or you are tired of 'booting up' just to charge your iPod Touch.

Overall good solid construction and easy to use.

Got one so I could charge my ipod anywhere, and it does mean I have not got to mess around plugging into my Pc,so it does make life easy.
Two points, it should come with the ipod as standard, and £19 is OTT.

    Who knows what GB means!

    Written by SG from UTTOXETER

    Mar 23, 2008

With regards to the previous review by GB - I haven't got a clue what they are on about. The product works fine with UK power sockets as the adaptor and plug clip securely together and cannot be separated without force - it's very similar to the power brick for the MacBook and iBook range.

The £19 is steep, especially as iPods previous to the 5th gen included one.

    Written by DH from Reading

I don't have a spare iPod cable so after a month in Europe my iPod classic died; I purchased the French version for EU25 which included a cable, power unit and adapter for France. The adapter fits my MacBook power supply so has a useful double value. The iPod was fully charged in an hour - very good!

    clunky and expensive

    Written by RJ from London

    Aug 25, 2008

The compact profile of the adaptor would be welcome - but is sacrificed when connected into a three pin UK plug - and some of the other larger world formats. The result is a clunky and awkward item. It works well though. But rather expensive.

Testament to Apple's continuous product improvement this latest USB charger is absolutely tiny! Just the thing to keep in your notebook bag to top up your iPhone or iPod on the go.

Surprisingly good value for money too as the package includes a USB2 sync cable that I really didn't expect at this price!

Next day delivery from the Apple store was much appreciated too.

All in all I can't award less than the full 5 stars - great work!
