    I've seen a lot worse

    • Written by from Newcastle Upon Tyne

I've just got my Apple laptop and haven't seen a laptop last as long on the battery as a macbook (one of the main reasons i bought it). All things considered, many people would pay anything from £49.99 up to £100 for a battery that doesn't have as much charge and yet most people reviewing the macbook battery haven't said anything about the charge. For those complaining about how long their battery has lasted, try using it via the mains when you don't really have to use the battery and equally, unless you're charging the battery, take the battery out when the laptop is plugged into the mains, you might just find that your battery will last longer.

    build quality dreadful, price disgusting

    • Written by from Teignmouth

disgustingly over-priced, especially considering the buid quality is so terrible. My macbook battery lasted about 1 year then dead.

seriously considering abandoning apple after over 6 years loyality. build quality of everything gets worse and worse whilst price stays high.

Battery failed 18 months old - not up to Apple standards

    • Written by from SWANSEA

I don't think I should be replacing this battery at only 18 months old for £99 - this isn't good quality/value but the Apple helpline says it is within their acceptable standards. Disappointed. I'm usually a great Apple fan.

    Dear Mr AK

    • Written by from Barton-le-Clay

The lifespan of your battery is VERY much dependent on how you treat it... the instructions tell us about charging, and discharging etc etc. this battery is HUGE, compared with my old Powerbook one, but they've streamlined other things to fit it in!

Mr AK, you can't compare this battery to a line of PSP ones...
you may fit 4 in the space, but you need 4 times that AS WELL to get the voltage up (4 in series X 4 in Parallel).. I think the size is really quite good, and the hour-life you get is good... Battery technology the world over has yet to catch up with everything else...

How about a solar panel on portable devices...(a dead phone left for the morning by the window so we can get through the afternoon for example) We couldn't expect it to RUN the machine, but if it gains an extra half-hour on top of the charge, the 'quids in'!

    Good Service, but why

    • Written by from West Dumbartonshire

The battery on my MacBook would also not hold a charge. Went to Scotsys in Glasgow, who told me that it was out of warranty by three months and would not do anything for me, even when I informed them that they had repaired the machine twice unsatisfactory and that I was without the machine for over a month!

Went to the Genius bar in Glasgow and told them the problems I have had and the battery life problems and they replaced it for free, good service!!

Was also told by the Genius, that Scotsys had not entered my serial number on the new logic board they fitted. Why are these people allowed to represent Apple.

11 month old 13" Macbook Battery

    • Written by from PITLOCHRY

The battery life of my machine is about half of it original capacity. I notified the supplier, Scotsys, of this by telephone and asked if this was normal.
They told me that it was out of warranty. I should take it to their store (Edinburgh is 70 miles away) and leave it with them for testing and that the machine will work without the battery.
I use the machine with the battery nearly all the time (whilst travelling) except when charging it. I bought it because it was portable.
The machine has been repaired twice under warranty for different things and been away for a total of 4 weeks already. My old computer packed up now so I have no spare.
As i cannot easily be without it the implication is that I buy a new battery.
    Not very satisfied.

Im now on my third charger and will now have to get a second battery!
After the first Magsafe failing, the battery died on me and apple kindly replaced. Now i've had to buy a new Magsafe after my current one broke and will now have to buy a new battery as it wont be recognized by my Macbook.
Not in the least bit happy!

    Deserves a nice review

    • Written by from Wimbldeon

Like others, the battery in my wife's MacBook went, system profiler said that it was unrecognized. Spoke to the nice people at Apple and although the MacBook was out of warranty by over a year they sent a replacement battery for free. Nice service from Apple!

    faulty battery

    • Written by from Clitheroe

I have exactly the same problem as so many others - battery simply doesn't work. My MacBook is just over a year old. Judging from the other complaints, it's done well to last that long. Very disappointed with Apple for flogging such a rip-off with what I have otherwise found to be an excellent computer.

    Macbook battery

    • Written by from Hereford

It pays to investigate a problem before picking up the phone to Apple or marching into a store. My battery was showing the black cross and no other sign of life. I found the problem on the website and went through the suggested fixes, none of which worked.
So, I rang Apple, told them what I had done and, without a moment's hesitation they said they will send me a new one free of charge - and my machine is over a year old! I don't know how to rate this starwise because it might be a duff product and it hasn't had time to arrive yet, but maximum stars for no quibble goodwill service.

I just want to say how brilliant i think this product is! It seems that people only write reviews if they have had problems with the product and seeing as theres only 4 or 5 bad reviews it seems pretty good to me!

Battery life on the macbook is superb!

How I got a replacement battery free from ...

    • Written by from London

I've had the same problem as everyone here. I bought my MacBook on 7th July 2007, so its not old at all & yet when I tried to run it off the battery it would shut down immediately. It would switch off as soon as the power cord was removed. I phoned apple & told them about the problem. They said i needed a battery update. What a load of rubbish because it didn't work. Then they said i needed a software update, also a load of rubbish. I phoned them again & told them nothing was working & I was extremely dis-satisfied that I was sold a faulty battery. I was then told to go to an official apple store where I could replace my current faulty battery for a brand new one. If you have a faulty battery, I would suggest you get onto apple & demand a new one as it is totally unacceptable to make & sell faulty products to the public

    Very disillusioned with Apple

    • Written by from Cork

I bought my macbook at the end of November and can relate to the alarming number of people who are peed off that the battery on the mac is all of a sudden no longer recognised, I saved long and hard to buy my mac as I am a student and now I am looking at having to pay out another 134 to buy a new battery. The quick release AC is great generally but not when you can only use your mac through the mains and any movement shuts down your computer.......very very angry

    equally unhappy

    • Written by from London

my macbook is just over a year old. i calibrated it regularly as this is my first laptop and i am very precious about it. it has now decided there is no battery in there and has gone completely dead. not reduced capacity, but refuses to see that there is one present. £100 pounds for a new battery to replace one i didn't break is completely unfair and unreasonable. it is a hardware fault not bad maintenance that caused it.

i'm a student and will not be able to replace this for some time. very unimpressed.

It is NOT about taking care... -- controller failure

    • Written by from London

Mine went DEAD after ~6 months. We are NOT talking about reduced capacity here. The on-board control ciruitry went, the battery is no longer recognised by the MacBook. MacOS says "no battery found". A mains power interruption of just one second will kill the MacBook. Not happy, me.

It does last, just take care of it!!

    • Written by from LONDON

Like with any battery, proper usage should involve a full drain and full charge. I can reach 114% of the original capacity on mine after 4 months with over 160 charge cycles and 10Hrs + usage per day. Download Coconut battery (battery mointor program) and also learn how to calibrate the battery, and it will last. Remember that even when the battery shuts the machne down on 0%; there is enough juice to keep the work your doing on 'pause' in sleep mode for over an hour so you don't have to panic to charge it at 4 or 2%.
My only complaint is that 5200mAh capacity isn't fair for the battery's size and price, as this averages 4 hours on an older Core Duo. (But four end to end standard psp batteries, taking up less area, would give you 7200mAh- or 1hour1/2 more life) meaning that theorically there can be much room for capacity improvement.
