I bought a brand new battery when I gave my MacBook to my mother after upgrading to a new notebook. Less than a year in, the battery totally failed and now cannot be charged. I had given the old battery back to Apple for recycling - wish I'd kept it now - it had more cycles left on it than I got out of this!

Total waste of £109 - I expect better from Apple. Will just rely on the mains adaptor in future.

I have the 2008, White Macbook!

My battery has lasted 6 years! Reading reviews online, I reckon this has lasted so long because I would let my battery run to 5% then charge it each time. I am very happy with my new battery....so far! My Macbook still works like the day I brought it and that's why I love Apple products, they last!

    Very poor

    • Written by from Horsham

Our Macbook was bought to replave an old G4 which had lasted 8 years.

Battery failed in less than a year initially intermittently so we took it in to Apple and they failed to find any problem. When it went totally it was past the 1 year guarantee so we are faced with a £100 bill for replacement - oh plus another £40 for travel to and parking in Brighton....

In the meantime we are left with a laptop which is no better than a desktop and which has to remain plugged in and powered up all the time otherwise we loose all data - i.e. it forgets the wireless link and passwords.

I have been an Apple fan since the old Apple Macintosh 2 in the mid 80's. however this last offering has left a very bad taste. Their products used to come with everything you needed and lasted for years. Now they are cutting functionality (no word processing, spreadsheets or drawing as standard, now no CD/DVD drive) and on this experience poor reliability. Now I'm not sure if I'll be going for another Mac after this one...

Macbook and battery are now 5.5 years old and still going strong in comparison to other makes of computer I've had before and since. Battery now down to 335 cycles out of the original 1050 but this includes some serious plugging-and-unplugging abuse when I lent the computer to someone else. Still runs for about 2hrs when unplugged, but dies without warning at about 14% charge. Consequently thinking about replacing it but in no hurry. A quality piece of kit, Apple.

Battery is 66 months old, on it's 1050 cycle count and still lasts 2 and a half hours after charging. Others may not be happy but I'm well impressed.

Why bother saying 1000 cycle count?!

    • Written by from Aylesbury

Adding the cost of this battery to the initial cost of the laptop and then looking at how long i have had the laptop for I could have bought a new "cheapish" non-apple laptop every year for the same cost! Apple has been a huge disappointment to me. I will continue with this laptop attached to the plug (as now it wont even turn on unless it's plugged in) and put the £101 towards a new laptop, which will definitely not be an Apple product.

    Good life span

    • Written by from Hucknall

So today my 4years and 2month old MacBook's battery has decided to die at 622 cycles out of a maximum of 1000 cycles. Although having to pay so much for a replacement battery is abit unfair as I have already replaced a MagSafe at £50 in its lifespan! Now to decide to run my ageing MacBook of the mains or fork out £101 for a new battery.

Mixed experience but good warranty service when needed

    • Written by from London

I bought my Macbook about 5 or 6 years ago and the first battery died suddenly and unexpectedly after about 15 months. I was not impressed but I took it to the Mac store and they swapped it for free despite it being out of 12 month warranty and beyond the 300 recharge cycles they normally use as a limit for a minimum lifespan. Nice service but i'd have been highly unimpressed if they hadn't.

The replacement battery lasted from then until it died recently. This time it's performance reduced gradually until it finally stopped recharging all-together. About 4 years life out of this one I think? 621 recharge cycles. Pretty reasonable I think.

If your battery dies unexpectedly (rather than gradually losing performance) I would recommend trying for a warranty replacement no matter how long you've had it.

Replacement battery is awful compared to original

    • Written by from King's Lynn

Having seen a number of poor reviews about this battery, I thought people had been unlucky and we are all more prone to complain rather than praise.

The original battery in my MacBook was excellent - it lasted way above the cycle count expected, it held its charge well, and if it said 4 hours you could expect 4 hours there or there about.

The replacement I purchased in September 2011 is completely different - when it says 4 hours it means an hour if you are lucky, when I open the MacBook it is invariably on red irrespective of the charging state when left.

It's got to the point where I only use my MacBook under duress (e.g. on a site that uses Flash) and plugged in - which is a shame as up to replacing the battery it was my go to device.

Terrible Terrible Terrible - AVOID THIS IF YOU CAN

    • Written by from Cheltenham

New Battery broke after about 3 1/2 months. £80 and it breaks after 3 1/2 months, obviously this is ok for Apple because they think after 90 days it's not their problem.

I can not believe how arrogant they are. I have pushing £2000 worth of Apple products at home and I feel stupid for it now over an £80 battery.

Looks like I'm not alone with this problem, Never Never Never buying with Apple again.

    MacBook Battery Life

    • Written by from Sallins

My battery has lasted 859 (Cycle Counts) and I have had it for 5-6 years. A credit to Apple considering it is only supposed to last on average 300 cycles. So now I am off to buy a new battery.

The original battery lasted for 4 years

The original battery on my white 13 inch Mac lasted for over 4 years and the battery life was great (still around 4 hours just before it died on me). I have just ordered a replacement one and I hope it will be as good as the original. The Apple Help line was great, quick and friendly.

    Battery is rubbish

    • Written by from Surbiton

I love my MacBook, but the battery is shockingly bad and expensive.

I've looked after my MacBook, and done what I can to preserve the battery, so was disappointed when it stopped working.

My battery suddenly died on me and stopped charging, so I'm now having to painfully shell out and get a new one.

I was told by mac care that the battery for the old 13 inch MacBook (in which they enjoyed telling me was out of warranty) is only meant to last 300 charge cycles which is nothing and that because technology has moved on and that new devices can expect longer. If technology has moved on, the surely Apple can improve the life cycle of batteries for older devices.

My boyfriend had an a G4 book and the battery on that lasted much much longer and many many years than this battery. When it came to replacing it, his reason was not because the battery had died.

Please Apple sort this out otherwise a lot of loyal customers are going to look for cheaper options when it comes to consumables.

    Still pleased

    • Written by from Fordingbridge

I'm just about to purchase my second replacement batter for my 13-inc MacBook, bought in 2006. Each battery has lasted roughly three years and this latest one has gone through over 360 cycles (I'm told that 300 is about the average).
Having inherited work laptops whose batteries only held about 20 minutes charge after being left running off the mains continuously, I've always taken care to charge and run down my battery, allowing it to completely run down until it powers off at least once a month.
If you look after these batteries, they will give you a good long life. I've recently been given the tip of removing the battery when you can run the laptop off the mains and I will be making use of that to further the length of time between replacements, if not increase the number of cycles, and save battery use for when I don't have access to a power source.

Excellent battery, unless you get the old swollen one.

    • Written by from Billingham

My battery from my 2008 Macbook White has just started saying "Condition: Replace Soon" which means it is holding less charge than it originally did. It still lasts nearly two hours and has taken 1624 cycles at the time of writing. I would hazard a guess that most of the people complaining that it is a year old and dies within 5 minutes are people who have constantly left the power cable in, which is NOT the way to treat a battery. Learn how to take care of Li-On batteries and they'll last for a very long time.

Finally, people saying Apple should incorporate their "new 7 hour battery technology" into these older models, it's not a new technology, it's just removing all of the casing and removing the ability to take out the battery yourself to create more physical space for cells.

    Battery Swollen after 18 months

    • Written by from cardiff

    Very disappointed in Apple standards.
I though i was the only one with a swollen battery that does not fit properly, damages the outer casing and also makes the trackpad unresponsive but a quick search online showed that this is a common problem.
As a student buying an expensive laptop to only cough up more than £100 for a new battery for no fault of mine is just ridiculous.
I have taken very good care of the battery always calibrating regularly.
The battery still holds a charge of about 4.5 hours with a cycle count of 117.

    Apple disappointed me...

I absolutely rate this battery as amazing!! I'm going to have to buy a new one for my macbook at the weekend as it has finally had enough.

I bought this macbook in August 2007, so it is 50 months old. The battery has an average life of 500-ish cycles. Mine has hit 1017. This is just incredible.

I still have the battery that came in my 2008 White MacBook, its 45 months old now and Coconut Battery reports 86% of the original capacity for my battery, even with 635 load cycles =) for a notebook battery, thats brilliant. My dads XPS M1330 is the same age and its already popping up a message saying to consider buying another, and it only runs for about 30 mins on battery now, mine goes for around 2.5 hours of watching video and internet browsing. With proper care, monthly calibrations, my battery is still working fine =)
