Apple iPod Radio Remote
Great addition to your iPod
Written by DW from Oxford
Jan 14, 2006
Since getting my iPod w/video, I've wanted a good remote. I also really miss the radio sometimes. When Apple announced this accessory last week I made an immediate order. I hope this review helps describe its features in more detail.
It simply plugs in to the dock/USB port on the bottom of your iPod. The headphone lead is a bit shorter than usual, to reduce the cable clutter.
As a remote, it works very well. It uses exactly the same control set as the iPod Shuffle, plus a 'hold' button. This allows my iPod to stay tucked away when I'm walking about - no more fumbling with pocket/sock/click wheel. You can easily navigate through the current playlist, album, artist, etc,. It seems to me that the volume is notably improved listening through the remote; I'm sure I don't need it turned up so far.
As an FM radio, it's also great. On the iPod, 'Radio' appears as an option in your menus once connected. You can scan to a specific frequency, or have the iPod find the nearest clear signal (this occasionally misses weaker stations). Individual stations may be marked for navigation using the remote, which can also turn the radio, and iPod, on and off. Available RDS signals are displayed (usually the station name). The signal is good; it worked consistently well on a bus I got home last night.
Finally, it doesn't have too deleterious an effect on battery life. Each use of the remote turns on the iPod backlight, which must contribute to power consumption, but I haven't run down the battery noticably faster whilst using it, is all I can observe.
In all, it was exactly what I was looking for and perfects my iPod's functionality. I can strongly recommend it.900 of 1352 people found this useful

iPod Radio Remote

Got this three weeks ago, and wow! I must admit I was a bit disappointed when I got my iPod 80gb classic as I thought it was a bit quiet, lacking in dynamics distorting with the bass, this I am told is due to EU legislation limiting the headphone output. Well all is forgiven when you get the iPod Radio Remote as the volume increases and you get a more dynamic sound with fuller bass and a more realistic midrange, and it does subtlety too, add in the convenience of having radio function with your iPod, it locks on to stations pretty well and this is still the same on the train. you also get the remote function which means you are not having to get your iPod out when altering the volume or changing tracks. For all intents and purposes it looks to the untrained eye like a white shuffle, I have had someone ask me where to get a white shuffle having seen it. Buy with confidence.

And about time!
Written by RR from london

Ok its taken its time but was it worth waiting for? Um yes.Took me an hour to set up though as I couldnt figure out why when I scrolled through the channels it would only give me odd numbers such as 105.7 105.9 etc. Then the penny dropped and I realised it was set to the US. To change it to the European setting go to settings and you will find an option to change the region. Well worth the money and you can still use your own headphones with it! Enjoy!

Good Stuff BUT far too expensive!!!!
Written by MD from London

Apple, for £35 i would like to have DAB Radio not only FM. good product but this shouldn't cost more than £10. also, most of us(customers) have earphones, so if it is a cost matter, you may provide the radio remote without the earphones! do what you have to do Steve Jobs, but this is EXPENSIVE!! also money doesn't grow on trees in the UK, we will be happy to pay just as much as the americans. thank you anyway and keep up the good work!

Apple iPod Radio Remote
Excellent but expensive...
Written by GT from Southsea

As with a lot of the iPod extras, this is another one that is a bit costly, and you have to wonder why an RDS radio that small couldn't be included in the iPod itself. However it is better value than the remote for say the 3rd gen iPods which was £30 without the radio. Anyway, unlike a lot of people on this site, I actually played around with the settings before I wrote the review (took all of 5 minutes) and figured out the broadcast regions easily. Consequently, I've had no problems with reception, even on the back of a ship 5 miles off the Dorset coast or in my office, where my mobile phone has trouble. Unlike others, I also charge and discharge my iPod properly, hence my iPod battery is in good shape, so the slight increase in power consumption isn't a issue. Also has a well laided out interface and simple tuning. I use it all the time, which is why I've given 5 instead of 4 stars, but next time Apple UK, give it a sensible price.

I've put off buying an iPod for ages because of the lack of radio. No longer! I just got my iPod and this radio remote and it's brilliant. Fantastic reception, and really groovy design. I think it's a brilliant addition to the iPod - which ain't bad either!!

Excellent

My new office doesn't have a radio so I thought I'd check this out. WOW!, well impressed. So easy to use and functional.
The reception is excellent;I couldn't get any DAB radio in my flat but I get a brilliant signal with this. The plug and play setup is great (up and running in 5 mins).
I really am impressed with the remote. Being able to control the ipod from the lapel clip control is a big plus. Even if you don't want a radio this alone makes it a good buy.
I just don't know why I waited for an excuse to get one of these. You won't be disappointed parting with the 35 quid; I'm certainly not :-)

Give the radio a chance - don't buck physics

Do people complaining about too much cable & poor reception realise, the cable is the antenna? All UK FM broadcast radio 87-108Mhz needs an aerial, wind up the cable and it hasn't got one.

Just what I wanted, like another reviewer this has made my iPod complete.
It really irratates me when people review on the Apple Store and put they're own mistakes as Apple's Mistake. To use any Apple Product you don't need to be clever, just have common sense.
Overall it is a great product. It picks up the stations I like better than purpose built radio's.27 of 33 people found this useful

Not that bad!
Written by KM from London

I bought this as a remote control so I could leave my IPod Classic in my bag at the beach - altruistic I know, OK - and I also like to have the radio as a varied music option. I resisted buying iPods until the 160 g came out, as I like to use it as a removable disc. Previously I had a iRiver 340, and if you want something really awkward to use get one of those!
I bought the gizmo in the U.S so only paid $35, so £16. I think it works very well. Great reception and functionality. The RDS is great in the States as you get the programme and the track in the header. As usual in the U.K they only broadcast minimal data and information. The lock facility does not fully work well with the lock on the iPod itself, check it out first when you buy it.
Like all Apple stuff it is idiosyncratic and you need a different mind set, and with all techy stuff a bit of patience to learn to get the most out of it.76 of 133 people found this useful

Remote/Radio for Ipod Video & Nano, it does work!
Written by DW from Reading
Mar 29, 2006
I read through all of the reviews and some were helpful some were the usual moaners who want everything perfect.
You won't always get perfect reception and for £35 you won't get DAB radio on it. Works excellent as a remote control if you are playing tunes in the car or on the train or bus and don't want to keep reaching for the ipod.
The Radio is fun, takes a bit of power but then lets be honest you want an ipod mainly for your digital music not radio, but it's great to have radio if you need it. It's nice and small and you get a pair of standard ipod ear phones for free which is great in case you mess up your original ones, ok if you have fancy sound isolating earphones then these are of no interest to you.
Like other people have said it's a another enhancement at a reasonable price, not cheap I agree but something most ipod owners could afford.
If you want a really fancy radio with amazing DAB type signal all the time then this might not be up to scratch for you but the average person this is great and well worth buying. As far as being a remote control is concerned 10/10.19 of 22 people found this useful

Worthwhile purchase

A brilliant little radio :)
Buy it if your old headphones broke because you get the radio cheaper then... if you only want the radio and have a pair of headphones you'd rather use than the iPod ones then you're paying a lot... but the new design of these headphones are really comfortable and actually stay in your ears if you turn your head!
The radio is crystal clear, I say buy it :)
(Don't forget to change the region from USA to Europe, threw me off when I tried Radio1!)

an excelent product even if you're not going to use the fm radio

i read the reviews for this product and some of them were slightly worrying. but after i bought it, i loved it. i dont use it to listen to the radio as after awhile it wore off out of my system. i prefer to listen to the music i have on my laptop as it is more me. but this little gadget makes life a heck lot easier,, when walkin down the road to school instead of tryin to walk and changing song or volume on the ipod itself which can get distracting and hard with the odd touch wheel, i can have this hooked to my bag strap and the ipod in my pocket an just click either skip, back volume up or down, paus play etc, i know it sounds stupid but this little gadget make life alot easier to listen to your pod. i would recomend it to every ipod owner,, on older ipods it will only do control, you wont be able to listen to the radio but it is still worthit, you can then use it just to change songs an stuff, and when you finaly upgrade,, listen to radio aswell. GET IT!!!

The New Apple Ipod Radio Remote is just one of the best accessories for the Apple Ipod Video and Nano. when you plug your new radio remote to your ipod it didn't go to the radio section the word radio came up on the main menu click it there you are to the radio section read the manual to save your favourite radio stations and you will be able to flick throught the radio station using the ipod click wheel or your new remote. the radio is amazing a clean clear service and most of your favourite station have RDS which you will be able to see what song is player or the radio stations name trust me the radio is great. you can aslo use the remote for you music and playlists which is great too as no more having to pull out your ipod to switch to and from songs, overall is mind-blowing 100% to the ipod radio remote however it was very expensive £35.00 it should have been at lest 20 or 25 but it's worth it.
