Great idea but needs work as some shortcomings and bugs.

    • Written by from London

Hue is great in principle, letting me tailor the lighting in my house in colour and brightness, plus control it from an app. The system was easy to setup and get going, plugging the bridge into my router and following the steps on the app. The bulbs are nicely built and quite bright. Two light my lounge in the evenings nicely.

    APP:
The controller app is garish in colour and needs to be improved, but overall it does the job. You get brightness and colour controls, though the latter are hard to use on an iphone's small screen, especially if you have lots of bulbs.

A big focus in the app seems to be on picking colours from photos, but this feels gimmicky. I can't think of many occasions where I want my lounge the colours of photos I've taken.

Programming presets is easy enough, though the app could be more intuitive here too. I still don't understand the difference between 'scenes' and 'light recipes' - seems a needless distinction. It's nice to have a slider to control the overall brightness of the scenes I have created though.

The timer feature is great - it's swish to be able to fade a preset scene up over say 30 minutes in the evening. Having the app know when it was getting dark would be even better and would save me needing to adjust the timer every few weeks. This is actually something I thought I could do with the geofencing feature (lights coming on when you are near home) but sadly this doesn't work in practice for 2 reasons.

Firstly because I want my lights to only come on when it's dark, and to do this you have to click the "sunset" option. But the apps determination of sunset can be quite different to the light levels outside.More importantly it doesn't take into account if I am already home or not. So I can have my lights turn on if I approach the house and it's dark, but if I am already home and then it gets dark the lights don't come on. This is because I've not crossed the geofence .

Finally it's a bit of a pain to setup different rooms. E.g. if I want to go in the bedroom, I have to either press a few clicks to get to the bedroom slider which is a pain, or make 2 scenes such as "lounge on bedroom on" and "lounge on bedroom off". With more rooms you need more permutations of scenes which gets confusing. Other 3rd party apps try and overcome this with the concept of rooms, but I've not found one I like yet.

    ISSUES:
I've had numerous issues with the system after 3-4 months use, which along with the high price and clunky app is the reasoning for the 3 stars.

One big problem is that 2 of my 3 bulbs emit an irritating high pitched whine when turned off. It's loud enough that you can hear them from across the room. I'm being sent replacements, but reading the forums it looks like people often get sent more noisy bulbs in return.

Also I have had the system lose 2 lamps. I've come home to find they've turned on by themselves to strange colours and show as not contactable in the app. I can search and add them back in, but they then show as new additional lamps, so my presets don't use them. Plus it leaves the old 'lost' bulbs in the app which is a pain as they get in the way. The only way to clear them out is to reset the whole system from the bridge, at which point you lose all your presets / alarms / settings... everything.

So overall, nice idea, but for the price needs improvement.

Quite simply one of the best products I have ever purchased for my home. I absolutely love this light system. It is so easy to set up, so easy to use and creates wonderful lighting states for a variety of scenarios. I have already created different states on top of the ones already provided that suit how I use my lounge. I know some people have said they aren't bright enough and I appreciate each home is different. I certainly cannot agree with that. My lounge isn't huge, I would say standard, and I have one ceiling light and two lamps and they are far brighter and better than any other lights I have owned before. Most of the time I dim or turn off the ceiling as it's just not required or change it to a colour to add ambiance. I would recommend to anyone for whom it falls into their budget for sure.

A good idea, but really lacks whats promised

    • Written by from vanløse

I've had this kit for a couple of weeks now, and even though im loving the ease of changing colours and to damp the lights, there is a few things that really dull..

Firstoff the colours. This is no living colors, it only does like 4-5 colours really well. Green is like none existing and the hue saturation does little compared to the colour scale.

Second, the software... Its not bad, but its not particularely good either. I think that most people know that there is alot of possibilities with these lights, unfortunatly philips doesnt really take the effort to utilize this properly.

Last is a quiet hum comming from these bulps, and turning them of through the software actually only makes its worse.. The hum is not as bad as experienced from my living colors lamp so i can live with it..

The price should match a somehow better product, hopefully we will se a hue .2 doing these things better in the future

FANTASTIC product that has already come a long way

    • Written by from Fleet

The Philips Hue lighting system is a great piece of kit. Yes, it is costly, but the second you have it you'll realise it was money well spent.

The system was very easy to set up. I have very unreliable wifi and this is the one wifi based system in my house that has never cut out or disconnected. It is incredible how having slightly different hues of lighting can affect your mood or energy so much.

The bulbs can go very bright, and creating setups to your preference is simple. A lot of the previous reviews here are based on the old app when it was still really in development. Since the new app update things are much more simple and intuitive. Once you start looking into things there are also great capabilities. For example:

    - Each morning I have it set so my bedroom lights come on slowly instead of my alarm, and on a setting that reflects daylight, so I wake up relaxed.

    - I had a party recently and I downloaded one of the many available third party apps, enabling my lights to change in time to the music. Searching "hue" on the App Store shows a huge variety of these apps.

    - I use the app "If This Then That" to create a series of rules, for example if it is going to rain my lights flash blue. If I leave my house the lights turn off behind me automatically. When it gets dark outside they come on automatically, using the sunset data from the weather app.

Your home will instantly feel advanced and simple with these. It is great being able to set such a variety of moods from your iPhone. A must buy!

    Good hardware, Beta level software

    • Written by from Kingston Upon Thames

Good light intensity, nice colours. No blues as another reviewer mentioned. The closer to blue you can get with the standard bulbs is a blueish violet. Better blue comes from the Bloom light.

The software is high on fluffy and low on actual basic functions. I bought the Hue system expecting a Sonos type experience, but you will have to wait for future update (I hope) for a proper experience.

Issues I have with the software:
    - no grouping by rooms. You can setup profiles that would be only valid for one room, but the process could be so much easier with grouping options. Frankly I can't understand why this has not been included in the 1.0 version.
    - The extra lamp added (a Bloom for me) did not belong at the same level as the other lamps. All profiles needed to be manually visited on each control devices (iPhones, iPad) to add the new lamp.
    - the lamps may have 16 millions colours, but the fidelity of the colour reproduction is not great.
    - Not easy to simply turn one one lamp at the intensity and colour you want.
    - Remove a lamp. Why should this be a complicated process that remove all your settings?

So, great concept but the usability is poor due to poor software. 4 stars for the hardware, and 1 star for the software. Total 2 stars because it is too expensive for an unfinished product.

Good but price could be a little bit less

    • Written by from OULU

I'm quite happy of this starter set. Works as expecting and actually not so big price in my situation. I bought these mainly for dimming capability and daylight spectrum. I have no dimmer so other alternative would have been change dimmers and buy dimmable led daylight spectrum lights.
Few thing I like to see in next version.
    - If I shut down lights from switch it does not remember my previous settings. Should at keast able to chose one setting that comes directly after switching light again.
    - Maximum brightness could be a little bit better but these are already very usable to be primary lights.
    - I'd like to be able to adjust based on color temperature
Great product, will buy more when price will drop.

great product, a few tweaks needed

    • Written by from Blessington

Recently bought this and i have to say we were impressed. there is a few things you need to consider.

    1. setup is a dream. one of those setups that work according to the tiny flier on setup delivered in the box. connecting the bulbs to the hub was simple and worked flawlessly for us.

    2. the remote login works well over 3g, about a 3-5 second delay which is pretty darn good IMHO.. the apps on the iphone work. the version on android is a little wobbly. the geowalling does not work with older iphone. my wife adores her 3s because of the shape but the geowalling is not supported on that version, she did not upgrade to the recent version for performance reasons. there is no geowalling on android at all and im running it on a nexus5 with the latest kitkat version.

    3. sometimes you do have to get the app to reconnent to the bridge or hub supplied, especially on android. its easy to do but you do need to reconnect to the meetme website and renew the security tokens. also works on ipads and android tablets, with the same limitations for android.

    4. i also have one of the backlighting options from philips. this is a light classified as a 'friend of hue'. it could be my ignorance but i cannot get that to automatically go on with all the other lights. perhaps its the friends of hue limitation. the app and bridge do recognise it, it just doesnt appear as an option to automatically turn the lights on when you group them together.

    5. the app is easy to use, the picture option for colours i personally think is more a marketing ploy than anything. it does work but i think it is a bit overkill.

    6. there are other apps appearing now, one activates on sound, XBMC (the home theatre app) is also working on one , i have not tried that yet.

    7. the colour array is huge. my better half loves the soft cream colour. honestly we must have spent about a 100 euro looking for a led light that is not some type of military quality searchlight. we didnt really find one until we came across this and the flexibility of colour change with something beside you always..namely a phone or tablet.

    8. i gave it 4 starts because i do think there is a the odd bug in the apps and honeslty philips...the price is stupidly expensive. you do get the feeling however that this is they way lighting should be and will be. if they made them even 30 euro per bulb we would replace the whole house but at 70 euro per bulb that aint happening. i personally am waiting for the competitor friends of hue products as they are sure to appear and that will drive the price down.

    9. overall, if you have the money, and lighting is something you like, it is worth getting...but it definitely falls into the category of 'wants' not 'needs'.

LED's will (if not already) rule the world and soon every light bulb from cars to planes, homes to skyscrapers will run on LED's. This is an innovative LED product from Philips, very bright and with the Apps available gives you full control over the lighting in your home (even from anywhere in the world)!
You can use timers (good security deterrent) or even GPS to detect when you approach your house so it turns on your lights with the colour / brightness you have pre-selected in your rooms
It even work as an extension of my Philips Ambilight TV and changes the room colour ambiance to match the film I am watching!
Energy saving as well and though a bit expensive at the moment, this will come down in time
    Brilliant product!
Sorry Thomas Edison but your 130 years of Light Bulb domination has ended!

A good product and one of the good ones in the market. However, the price is quite steep for three bulbs that can be controlled by a device.

I think they need to reduce the price so more can take advantage of energy saving and lighting design.

Hue starter pack - expensive but great

    • Written by from Newcastle

There is a novelty value to buying these... lovely colours, etc. But for me the real value is waking up to a timed light alarm which wakes me up gently. Felt guilty about paying so much for these but I'm glad I did. Check out the most recent update of the app.. Geofencing and IFttt compatible makes it awesome. In summary.. if you just want some mad lightbulbs then OK, but the price is a bit steep. But if you are prepared to properly integrate these with your other apps then go for it.

    Excellent

    • Written by from Warrington

I bought the starter set in December and installed all three lamps in my living room. One in a large white globe which sit in the floor, another under a frosted glass table that holds my computer and the last in a uptight standard lamp. The three lamp provide more than enough light for reading and general lighting needs but really come into their own when used for setting moods. We love them when watching movies, especially as I downloaded some cinema themes. They have been faultless in their operation, no issues at all. They don't flicker which one reviewer stated, so I can only assume there is some error in his setup. They use little energy and we live them.

    Appalling Product

    • Written by from Barston

Apple should be ashamed of selling such an appalling product.

Replacing existing low energy bulbs, the Hue bulbs (2 of 4) flickered continually, which makes being in the same room distracting.

Periodically, at different frequencies, but at one point about once an hour, the bulbs switched themselves off and back on. Which would be annoying in any device, but stops a light being useful at all.

Colours were OK, and the setup was as simple as promised, but the basic product is just useless and not fit for purpose.
    And expensive.

600 lumens is not such a bright idea

    • Written by from London

If you predominantly use 60W bulbs in your house, then bear in mind that while those put out around 800 lumens, these Hue bulbs only manage 600 lumens, which is obviously a fair bit darker.

So while these are great for use in rooms that never need to be brightly lit, they're not really suitable for kitchens or study areas.

A Great Product, but easily misunderstood

    • Written by from Telford

The Hue lighting system consists of a controller and then up to 50 bulbs. The Hue is primarily designed for domestic lighting - so the colour gamut used is tailored towards that.

This means that some colours such as deep blues or greens are not easily achievable using the device. This is a price to pay for the stunning flexibility you have over the range of white light available. You can't tell that the light source is LED, and it reaches maximum power instantly (unlike energy saving bulbs).

The system has been very reliable and has required no resets to get it to work. A nice touch is that when you turn a bulb on it functions exactly like a normal lightbulb - so in case of router / computer failure you are not without light.

The software app to control the lights is definitely an early version, but Philips have recently released the SDK for developers, so more applications to use the lights will be possible.
