I used these headphones almost every day for more than one and a half year. I used with my iPhone and with my MacBook Pro as well. FYI: if you use it with your MacBook and listen music in iTunes, you can use the controls to change volume and pause/play music.
It has georgeous sound, dynamic basses, nice and clear treble tones... just perfect.
I'm absolutely satisfied with this product.

    These are brilliant!

Nice balanced sound, good bass extension, clear mids and treble and with a remote control. These were my requirements and I finally found them with this headset.

They do benefit from some burn-in time, I'm finding the treble extension is opening up more.

I think at this price point, these are a great choice.

Lovely sound, but unfortunately has a cable design error

    • Written by from Odense C

I've used the UE 400vi with great enjoyment, both for general use and while exercising. The sound quality is really good compared to all of the other in-ears I've heard through the years, they fitted very well into my ears and the tangle-free cable was really nice.
Unfortunately I have twice sent my UE 400vi back to the retailer due to a cable design error, because it after long time use gets ripped up in the connection to the mini-jack. Last time I decided to get my money back, and therefore tried out the Nocs NS400, which cannot live up to the UE 400vi in regards to both the sound quality and fitting into my ears. I'm very disappointed of the Nocs NS400.
The UE 400vi is indeed great earphones, and had it not been for the cable design error, I would buy another pair. 5 stars for sound quality and fitting, but 3 stars in general due to that single annoying flaw. For your info Logitech did offer great service.

Everything (positive) everyone has said they are

    • Written by from London

Bought entirely on the basis of the review on this site.

    Excellent little head phones.

Functional rather than flashy but well built and really good sound for the size and money. Stay well put in ears - none of the constant fiddling that bedevils similar ear buds.

My only wish is that the solid little plastic box that they come with was in a brighter colour than grey so that I could find it more easily in he depths of my bad.

    10 month review

    • Written by from wellington

I got these headphones as a requested gift, having read the sound reviews on this page. I have now had these headphones for 10 months and they need a replacement.

To start with they were brilliant, I previously had the Nixon headphones which fell apart very quickly. So was blown away with the quality of both the sound and the build. I have used this set almost every day for at least 7 hours, (as I listen to music whilst I work). Using the headset for Skype calls has been brilliant and I have never had the microphone issue.

Over the 10 months though: One cone has almost fully gone, the cable has required some electrical tape to hold it together and the buds require constant super glueing. Its now got to the stage where I can only use one bud and every time I take it out, the bud itself stays in my ear and I need to prize it out with my fingers.

But instead of reading the above as bad comments. View it instead, that only now am I prepared to get a new pair, the sound quality is that good. Purely out of curiosity though I will try different brand.

My only real criticism is the stupid cable. The wear and tear is probably typical for a product used this extensively. I think they were trying to create the flat profile that the beats headphones use for anti tangle..... but they failed. You spend far to much time trying to straighten it every time you get them out.

Dishonest reviews and misleading product description by Apple

    • Written by from Stevenage

I bought this headphones from the Apple store in Cambridge (UK), the sound quality is quite good, but, the remote is very very poor with the iphone 4. The mic is very poor with the iphone 4 as well - it echoes when you answer calls with it. You can't skip tracks forward or backward with the iphone 4 as the remote isn't compartible.
Apple's description of this headphone's compartibility with iphone 4 is misleading.
The sound quality is fine for the price, but, you cannot enjoy full mic/remote features with iphone 4, plus the silicon buds are utterly useless - they leak sound and just wont stay as you have to keep pushing them in and hurting your ears in the process. This is a true and straight from the heart no bones review. Use your mind!

    Great buds!

Love these. Great full sound and nice design. I just had these on in starbucks and could only hear my music. And great quality at that. No interruptions. I think I'll be buying these again in future. Definitely recommended.

    Outstanding sound for the money.

    • Written by from Cambridge

My first pair of "expensive" ear buds. Incredibly comfortable, great iPhone controls, good selection of squishy bits for all ear sizes, well built. HUGE sound, HUGE bass, bright and clean treble. Stop looking at those overpriced 'Beats' ear buds and get these. The review from a sound engineer was enough for me, he was right. Superb, 6 Stars!

These are by far the best set of earbuds I've owned and well worth the higher price. One point to make is that it is critical you get the right fit of bud cover to ensure you're getting the solid kick of bass these critters produce. If all you hear is high treble and tin can sound...try a larger size bud cover and you won't be dissapointed.

I purchased these headphones based on the excellent reviews on the Apple Website. Having used the headphones for 5 days I felt compelled to place a more accurate review on the website.

    - Flat cable that doesn't tangle as easily, look good, light weight - BUT THAT IS ALL

    - Ear pieces squeak in the ear on movement, so if you are on a call, listening to music etc and actually moving they are horrendous.
    - Purchased these ahead of the Bose based on the reviews - people please be honest when reviewing, the quality is not in the same league as the Bose, in fact it is very very average
    - Unless you are a giraffe the mic is positioned a long way down the cord and you will struggle to have a conversation without picking up the mic
    - Build quality - positively iffy - the volume control, mic housing I suspect won't last more than a few months
    - Overall very disappointed and wish the site had had more accurate reviews giving an honest assessment of the product

    great headphones

in this price class, this is probably the best earphones on the market, they are as in the description, crisp highs, warm mids, yet they lack some bass

    Well worth it

    • Written by from GLASGOW

I read the reviews prior to visiting Apple store. Went with my wife and shown her the price of a set of B&W one - jumped out of her skin "how much for headphones?".

But I really went for these. She still though they were expensive. But once home, she tried them and said they sound excellent, fitted well.....

After I got them back, I tried them and agreed. Take time to try the different sizes of 'plugs' to get the best fit. They cut out most of the ambient noise.

Sound is great all across the range from highs to lows. I've only ever spent £40 on a pair of headphones, these are probably the most I would pay and worth every penny.

For the price - absolutely excellent

    • Written by from London

I've had headphones twice or three times the price of these and the only real difference is that these have a bit more bass than the very top end ones - that's it. They are made very well (cable is robust - so expectations are that they will last) and the sound is fantastic for the price. It is worth trying out the different sized earbuds too for the perfect fit.

With my 2nd set of earphones broke in a year I was determined to get a new set that sounded good for starters as I have used shure and seinheisser and have been disappointed with them.

The problem is where do you start. There's so many.

After looking at b&w, Bose and high end shure I was still none the wiser, so I took a gamble. Checked on the apple store and went for the highest rated and it was these.
Boy was that one of my smarter moments.

    These are incredible.

On my way home straight out the box in my iphone 4s and the testing started.

Be aware I'm crazy about music and all kinds. This had a lot to live upto in my eyes for great sounds and to leave the sound of London only visual.

I sat on the train and threw the following at the earphones

Hollie cook (reggae) daughter (folk) bonobo (lo-fi beats) Gary Clark jr (heavy blues) AIM (hip hop) Ben Howard ... I heard moments on tracks, especially the folk ones I have never heard. Whispering etc. the sound is so clean! The bass rich and mids and highs are fantastic.
Once the music is on you can't hear any external noise and with 5 different ear fittings there has to be one to fit everyone?

The design is very tidy aswell. Including a personal favourite. A flat cable. In built multi operational remote with mic is another huge bonus.

They don't get confused. As good speakers produce, the louder you play your music the louder it sounds and no muddy sensation at all.

I have worn these for 2.5 hours straight and have not needed to take them out of my ears.

They truly are wonderful and a absolute bargain. 2 year guarantee included.

Don't even think about it. If you are a audiophile looking for faithful music reproduction. Don't look any further.

    The Best Headphones I've Tried

    • Written by from Crowborough

After losing patience with the awful Beats by Dr Dre Tour headphones, I did some research and went for these. The sound quality is lightyears ahead of the Beats, with excellent clarity across the range. Whilst they probably can't quite match the bass of the Beats, they are extremely close. With the rest of the range being far superior to the Beats, the overall music experience is so much more rewarding.

The fit with the 400vi headphones is also much better. The earbuds are much smaller, lighter, more comfortable and provide a much better seal with the ear. Unlike the Beats, which I was constantly adjusting, these sit in the ear and stay there.

The only negative thing I would say is that they aren't the flashiest looking headphones, and if you just looked at the box and the headphones alone you could be forgiven for thinking they look a little cheap. However, it's quite clear when you plug them in that the focus of Ultimate Ears was on excellent quality sound reproduction. In this they have excelled. At the price, I find it had to believe there's a better set of headphones out there.

    Truly an Ultimate Earphone...

    • Written by from Havant

I am not normally one to write a review on anything but on this rare occasion felt that something needed to be said.

Bottom line: for the amount of money I paid, these are a killer..

I read the reviews and as my previous pair of £60 headphones had collapsed (disappointingly early) I felt I needed to replace them and these seemed a likely candidate.

    Bass response excellent
    Treble response excellent
    Top end sweet and clear
    Build quality excellent.

OK - like all in-ear headphones you hear the voice projected smack between the ears rather than in front of you but these seem much less plagued with a "mumpfy" middy response so typical of these items.

In sum you can spend a lot more money and have some thing far worse. Am buying another set for my daughter for Xmas. Enough said.

”Ultimate Ears” The name says it all!

    • Written by from København N

I have some Beats Studio headphones for home use and these are great. I thought I would like to try Beats Tour ControlTalk In-ear headphones but I was very disappointed of the sound and they were impossible to fit in the ears. I sold them and I began to look after in-ear headphones. I tried BOSE MIE2i Mobile Headset and they just look so industrial and use of cheap plastic. The sound is god but to be great and have the base, you have to push them in to your ears. I found the Ultimate Ears 400vi. My first impression was Wau! The sound is awesome they look great and they just fit perfectly. If you like great sound, then don’t think about buying. Buy them. You will never regret.

    Ultimately great

    • Written by from London

As a professional sound engineer, headphone in my professional work are very important therefore i am very choosy when it come to buying in ear headphones, the Ultimate Ears 400vi are a very good edition to my collection. The bass response is very full rivaling the professional moulded in ears system that Ultimate make. The addition of integrated volume, mic and answer button make these headphone a must have, the mic even worked clearly in the most windy of conditions! A great buy.

I had some Phillips in ear headphones and wanted an upgrade. I spent £105 on some Shure 115, but found I didn't like the sound.. I took a punt on these, and WOW! such a detailed sound, from my iPhone on pretty low bit rates (160kbps)! What I didn't like about the Shures was it had good bass but the mids were too prominent and the highs were severely lacking, and I wanted good bass and treble also, these UEs really deliver that, and £30 cheaper too!

    Ultimate Ears are indeed Ultimate.

    • Written by from London

I have gone through quite a few apple compatible earphones. After a bit of research, I thought i'd try these. They are branded as UE 400vi in Europe and Asia. They are branded as UE 500vi in the USA and South America. Same earphones I have found. These are the only earphones in this price range that have 1. BASS - A Dramatic and solid Bass 2. Clear mids, lows and highs - I heard details that other earphones missed. 3. Decent Noise Isolation, so you don't hear the fellow next to you on the tube, and they don't hear you.

I've tried the Monster Beats Tour Earphones, which is the latest mainstream fad. I had a good opportunity to try them when another apple store customer was returning theirs (I gather due to some kind of case vs jack issue). The bass on the monster beats was about the same as the UE 400vi's. However, the clarity on the Monster beats earphones was far lower.

I've also tried numerous other apple compatible earphones in this price range from sennheiser's to japanese Audio-Technica to Apple's own earbuds (not the ones that come with iphone / ipod - the in ear dual drivers for 60 pounds - great value and good sound). Compared to these the UE 400vi's sound beautiful and deep. They are very very well tuned dynamic drivers and have a rich, beautiful and superior sound.

The only real issue I have with these is that the mic is slightly too low for me. Easily solved by wrapping the earphones over your ears. I don't think most people will have this problem though.

They're also light and comfortable. which is a plus when you want to use the mic for hours on end.

These are tucked away in an unassuming area of the apple store, away from the flashy and inferior monster beats, vodas, and Klipsch's. For an unassuming pair of earphones, these sound superb. It really feels like you're listening to a much more expensive piece of kit.
