Reliable backup device

I have used this drive to back up data from two Macs for the past six months and so far I haven't had a problem. Firewire has the advantage over USB if you want to make an exact copy of your computer's hard drive and be able to boot up from it. …More

Works perfectly with Airport Extreme :D
Written by WR from Cupertino

Installed Airport Disk Utility, plugged it in via USB and it worked instantly. I even shared a USB pen drive off of the hub at the same time. Once you have saved the password in your keychain the drives auto mount to the desktop every time you connect to the network. If you want to rename the drive, plug it directly to your computer first though. Not quite sure what went wrong for the other person? Maybe that drive was faulty? Still I bought it anyway - and it works - 500GB of Network Attached Storage - Wheeeeee :D …More

BE CAREFUL
Written by MD from Bray

Even if the Firewire Hub / USB hub is very attractive as it's all combined with a hardrive, the Firewire HUB is very unstable... I was happy to free up my MacBook pro and MacMini from about 160GB of cluttered data. But it generously lost everything (catalogue of the drive) when I tried to plug another hardrive(Lacie so shouldn't be bad) on the firewire hub... Well, happy days!!! So use at your own risks... otherwise as a hardrive it work just fine... …More

Overheating!
Written by RS from Coventry

I would suggest that you do not stack this hard drive with an Airport Extreme on top. It gets very hot and after a few months your hard drive drops off the network with alarming regularity.
I had the drive case open to see if the fan was jammed, and I can't find one!
Make of that what you will...
Its a good drive until it stops working! …More15 of 16 people found this useful

Small, does what it says on the tin

Handy drive, size match to Airport Extreme, sides are silver grey instead of the Extreme's white, (didn't buy specifically to stack anyway) has been reliable, quiet when not in active use, perfectly acceptable noise when in use; mine is partitioned into two, one for a back-up (bootable clone using SuperDuper) and one for the iTunes folder. Godsend when the internal hard drive went recently.
Has not been used in a stack so has been relatively cool - not sure how much the stack system warms them all up!
Back-up, back-up! Note that for a bootable back-up you may need a Firewire drive so choose a drive carefully, ideally both USB & Firewire like this one. …More9 of 12 people found this useful
