Learn more about AirPort Extreme

  • Ultra-fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

With 802.11ac technology and a powerful beamforming antenna array, AirPort Extreme gives you up to 3x faster Wi-Fi and a stronger, clearer signal.1 And because it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest performance possible.

    Designed with performance in mind.

With the antennas at the top of the elevated design, AirPort Extreme now has a higher platform for dispersing the signal. We also increased the number of antennas. There are now six of them — three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac technology, they let you connect faster, farther, and with more power than ever before.

Easy setup for iOS and OS X.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to AirPort Extreme and use the built-in setup assistant to create your new wireless network in just a few taps from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If you’re using a Mac, use the built-in AirPort Utility. Setup is just as fast and just as easy.

Share your hard drive or printer.

AirPort Extreme can turn any external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi-Fi network. So all the documents, videos, photos and other files instantly become available to anyone, Mac and PC users alike. You can even connect a printer and share it wirelessly.

    Compatibility and security.

Any Wi-Fi device you have will work with AirPort Extreme. That’s because it’s compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11ac specifications. And since AirPort Extreme features a built-in firewall that protects your network from malicious Internet attacks, you can enjoy the web with peace of mind.

Excellent ran Picked up the first one in Manchester Arndale this morning, I'd been waiting for this 802.11ac upgrade for a while.
Excellent range, superb speeds, quick and easy set up, looks great.
Supports local loopback feature which I really needed, the old standard package router I used to use has nothing on this new AirPort Extreme.
Looking forward to using 802.11ac devices with it.
Highly recommended, overall a great buy.

I was only able to get about 81 to 108 mbits/second from my corner of the house, but now it's 162 to 216. Meanwhile, in the room itself, computers there are getting 450 mbits/sec instead of 300.

So even if you have old hardware there are benefits to speed and distance, as hoped and expected, but you never know.

Delighted Ordered immediately after WWDC 2013 to replace an venerable Linksys WRT54G whose fading antenna power was failing.

Delighted so far, setup was straightforward, done in less than 10 minutes from opening the box. Gigabit ethernet is delivering the full bandwidth from my cable modem for the first time and the wireless coverage is uniformly excellent in my thick walled and three storey Victorian terrace, noticeably quicker for my n capable devices. I don't have any ac devices yet to test those even higher speeds.

Wireless sharing of a Kodak printer also working as hoped.

Happy to recommend - nice job Apple.

Out of the box its a smart looking item and after setting my Virgin Superhub to modem mode and following the simple instructions during the Airport Extreme set up process I was connected within a few minutes. Once I had worked my way round the house (3 storey solid brick construction) updating the connection on all my devices (2 imacs, macbook pro, 2 Apple TVs, 1 work laptop, ipad, iphone, B&W A7 airplay speaker, epson wireless printer etc) everything worked perfectly and download speeds increased by around 30%. I was well please with my purchase. The only issue I had was the Bowers and Wilkins A7 airplay system constantly cut out and disconnected from the network meaning I had to go through the A7 set up process many times over the first few days. Very frustrating! However this was resolved by just turning the Airport Extreme off and on. Problem solved and since then I haven't had a single drop out.
I have now had the Airport Extreme for a week and I have had no other issues. Very please so thought I would post an honest review and highlight all the kit it works perfectly with and the kind of home the Airport works well in as many reviews don't mention this information and this info really helps when researching something like a router. It's no more expensive then a good none Apple router so for me it was money well spent. Finally the signal in the garden has always been almost no existent but now I have a decent connection there to, maybe I will add an airpot express to the set up just to beef this up a little to.

With iPhone, iPad and Mac Airport tool setup is a breeze.. and maintanence is also easy. However... every single little change requires reboot... Come on Apple?!

I have used if for about a week now and no problems what so ever - it's stabile! I don't see the problem some users describe, where they have to reboot to maintain speed. I run about 10 clients on them, streaming a lot of Netflix etc. No problem with speed changing.

Expensive but pretty and stabile.. :-)

This is the first Apple product that I've purchased and felt utterly let down by it.

I purchased it to replace my Virgin Media This is the first Apple product that I've purchased and felt utterly let down by it.

I purchased it to replace my Virgin Media Superhub running on 2.4GHz. I thought with dual band and 6 antennas on the Airport Extreme Wi-Fi speeds would be much better or even at least a little better than the standard hub I had. However on tests using my iPhone 5s, iPad Air, Mac Mini and laptop speeds attained were no better, and in some cases worse than the Virgin Media Super Hub.

So although it looks and all the blurb makes it sound amazing I'm afraid real life use is far from good :(
