Time Capsule - 3 TB
Product Information
-
Automatic backup with Time Machine.
Time Capsule works automatically with Time Machine in OS X Leopard or later to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, and you can back up all the computers in your home to a central location. New technologies in Time Capsule and refinements to Time Machine make backing up to Time Capsule using Snow Leopard up to 75 percent faster than before.2
Server-grade storage.
The massive 2TB or 3TB server-grade hard drive gives you all the capacity and safety you need for backing up all your Mac computers.
Easy wireless networking.
Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is available as download for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.3
Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.
For maximum range and compatibility, Time Capsule works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.4
Guest networking
Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.
Wireless drive sharing.
Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive, whether you have a Mac or a PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing all kinds of files. If you use iCloud Back to My Mac with OS X Lion or later, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.
Print without wires.
Print documents, photos and more from any room in your home or office to a central printer connected to Time Capsule via USB. (See system requirements.)
Strong security and access controls.
Protect yourself with the built-in firewall and industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP.
Works with iPad, iPhone, Apple TV and more.
Time Capsule works with Mac computers, PCs, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices — all at the same time.

time capsule with snow leapard is great, upgrade to lion and nothing works
I upgraded to Lion and now trying to restore photos from time machine is impossible, with snow leopard opening time machine from w ithin I photo retained the history of I photo galleries back in time so that restoring selected images from galleries was easy, with lion it is not possible to view I photo on backup disk. After 1.5 hours on the phone to apple support they agreed it was a mess.Only way was to copy whole of 384 gb of old library across to my I mac,(estimated 18hours!)pick out the 20 or so photos I wanted then trash the transferred library.great idea, now re installing Snow Leopard. …

Great idea - poor execution
Really needed a 3Tb server to free up the MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs we have. First unit shipped lasted twenty-four hours befor e dropping off the network for no apparent reason. Power cycling is the only option and this did not last. Reset entire device - no dice. Sent back (after a lot of telephone wrangling) got a replacement - guess what - doing EXACTLY the same thing. These are too unreliable - especially if you rely on them for your critical backups. …

Read up on it before you buy - It does what it says on the tin!
This is a back up device for your MAC first and foremost, it is NOT a storage device unless you connect an external hard drive to the USB port. If you connect a powered USB hub you can connect multiple drives that solves the storage issue, you can also point additional Time Machine back ups to these hard drives if you have more than one MAC. Its an excellent WI-FI router, ours has an Air Port to extend range over a large house, works without fault. Have had to use a Time Machine back up when a hard drive failed in one of our iMacs worked without fault, but slow. Love mine. Don't understand the issues with it. …

The new one is great
Yes the old tc's did have the dying problem but they have fixed that on the new one it is great. I run mine 24/7 and its been runn ing for 2 1/2 years if you have an old one before it dies what you need to do is buy an apple AirPort Extreme and then buy either a 3TB or a 2TB hard drive connect it to the extreme through the USB and you will have it just like the tc only it will work forever and it will work with time machine and it will be just like a tc and back up wirelessly

Disappointed
Have to say that I am disappointed with the Time Capsule. It could be so much better than what it is.
First of all it does not back up iPad, iPod or iPhone unless they are already backed up on your computer.
This is purely used to backup your Mac and will not automatically back up a windows PC.
The reason this disappoints is because it could be so much more. The automatic backup of your Mac is a good feature but I wanted this so that I could free up space as well as back up my system. I hoped that I could move photos, videos, etc to the TC and then access them as required through any of my Apple devices which would free up loads of space. Ok you can write to your TC but the problem is the data you write will eventually be wiped over automatically and without warning when your Mac backup is updated as it works on a first in first out basis when deleting old files.
An option to allocate x amount of space for backup and another amount for hard drive style storage as well as easy access and streaming to other Apple devices would make this an amazing product. Unfortunately it doesn't do this. …- Written by David R from Jarrow

Time Capsule saved my job!
I purchased one of these last summer to replace my old Netgear router. The 3tb backup seemed like a nice bonus so I decided I wou ld go for that model as I work long hours and unfortunately don't have time to regularly back up my data (I know, it's bad). On Monday this week, I copied everything off my Macbook to an external drive in order to make space for some development work I had to do. At the end of the day I went to put it all back on my Mac and....clunk! the external drive failed completely, with everything I have worked on for the last 12 months (and it was really important data too with severe implications for the company I work for had it been lost). Fortunately when I got home, I found my time Capsule had EVERYTHING backed up to 2:00am the evening before when I had last shut down my Macbook. I had never made any effort to back this stuff up other than to initially set up the device and forget about it, and it was all waiting for me. I went back to work the next day and found my boss looking very unhappy, he was at a loss as to what we would do without this data. When I told him about the Time Capsule his face lit up, we are all so happy, several colleagues have since gone out to buy TC's and my new nickname at work is "Captain Time Capsule". Thank you Apple, you have saved my rear end, from me and from everyone here at (a competing I.T company) :-) …
