Overview

Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.

    Doesn't work with data projectors

    This adaptor is very disappointing. I found that it works fine with some small (20 inch) Samsung monitors that have a VGA input but it doesn't work with any of the data projectors I have in my university department so I can't use my new MacBook Pro (unipart aluminium case) for Powerpoint presentations, which was one of the main reasons for buying the laptop. The problem seems to be that the laptop senses the data projector ( and scales down the laptop display to VGA) but the projector doesn't detect the laptop (and so fails to display the image from the laptop screen). My old MacBookPro (Intel core duo) works fine with all data projectors (using the DVI to VGA adaptor) and I'm now in the silly position of having to use the old laptop for all travel (conferences etc) plus teaching in the university. The wonderful looking new MacBook Pro has to stay at home. Apple needs to issue a firmware fix or a better adaptor as soon as possible. …More

    Does not work with Samsung TV's, use the DVI adapter instead

    Very poor

    I've got one of these to connect my Macbook Pro to my Samsung TV but as with everyone else, the TV doesn't recognise the output from the laptop. (It works find with my Dell laptop and Windows XP).

    It works - always...

    I deliver training programmes round the world in all sorts of venues. Projectors provided by hotels, conference centres or client meeting rooms always have a VGA connection (never a Mac port) and, in the last four years, my MacBook has always connected without problems using this adaptor. It does what it says - at £21 you might argue it's expensive for a bit of cable with a connector, but if you're being paid to present stuff on the screen it's not exactly expensive …More

    Not consistent! - Work around required.

    First time I tried it no problem - wiring my MacBook Air up to a Dell MP3400 so I thought great - silly me! Next time same set up but although the Mac changed screen resolution the projector did nothing! MAJOR PAIN! Like I had people over and it just would not work! Finally I found the only work-around - and so far this does work every time. You have to turn your Mac completely off. Make sure the projector is ON - plug the projector into your Mac and then turn your Mac on. In that order and only in that order - and then when your Mac comes on about 10 seconds later the projector will pick up the signal and you're in business. Not that impressed though! You would think Apple would have gotten this sorted. …More
