Overview

The 85 Watt Apple PortableMagSafe Power Adapter features the MagSafe Connector — a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

    Worst. Adapter. Ever.

Over the years I'm sure I've bought more PowerBook mains adapters than actual PowerBooks (or now, MacBook Pros). Apple just can't seem to make solid, reliable units appropriate to the wear and tear portable computers inevitably experience. This unit is no exception. The 18v cable from the adapter is very thin and the rubber becomes hot and smelly almost from the word go, and eventually melts through completely! While the illustration shown here has the cable wrapped around the cable holders, doing that is the sort of thing expressly warned against on this items knowledge base document, because it will strain the connection between the cable and the transformer. And that connection is indeed very feeble. Almost regardless of the care you lavish on this device, the cable will work its way loose, leading to sparking, the smell of melting rubber, and then eventual failure. That you end up having to spend £59 plus VAT every year or two to replace it is outrageous. Apple, pull your socks up! Build an adapter that is rugged, and if the cable is going to be cheap and nasty, at least make it so all we need to buy is another plug-in cable, not the whole transformer unit as well! Talk about being environmentally, as well as economically, unsound. More

    Feeble plug-in Cable

Whyl can't we buy another plug-in cable, not the whole transformer unit as well!.The problem is with the fragile cable, not the adaptor. £59 plus VAT to replace it is outrageous. How much could a stand alone cable cost ? More

not happy with the power adaptor :(

I am about to buy my 3rd charger. Must have replaced my first power adaptor unfortunately, with an old generation charger, sigh. I bought my laptop in 2006.

Can Apple confirm that the have improved the design since November 2008 before I go spend another of my hard earn £60 on an obsolescent product?

It's not as bad as some other people have reported but the last power adapter I bought only lasted 1 year and I pretty much treated it like a baby.

Come on Apple, I like the products but next time round (and especially in a recession) I wouldn't think twice about buying a PC!

    Brilliant mains - and light

I can't understand the other reviews. Perhaps the users have a bit vicious with this lead. I've had mine since I bought my macbook 2 years ago and I've NEVER had a problem. However, I do make sure its not wrenched out of its socket, and when using it (for 5 or 6 hours at a time), I pull it to unkink major twists.

I've just bought another one purely because I want a spare in my case when I have to dash out to do some work, so I don't have to crawl over the floor and unplug my normal one.

Ignore the reviews, this is a brilliant adapter, its got a thin, lightweight cable and its more than long enough to trawl all around my living room when I'm moving about. Just treat it with respect and it will behave.
