    Ensure you know what you're buying!

    Beware of what you're buying, people. This cable is specifically for the computers that are listed in the review, and is intended to take you from Apple's proprietry mini-DVI connector (such as the one featured on the 12" Powerbook G4) to normal VGA.
    This is not, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, simply a VGA extension cord. You plug this into your computer, then the long cable that comes out of your monitor plugs into this.
    Apple need to make extra cable-buying easier in the Apple Store, especially as each of their computers need different cables...

    Excellent... (just make sure you order the right cable)

    First I ordered 'VGA Display Adapter' by mistake...
    Make sure the cable you order is the Correct one for your machine/peripheral.
    A lot of these cables look the same in the small picture and sound the same in the description. Check your requirements thoroughly before purchase. (ie - connections for both ends)
    I needed to connect a VGA TFT to my iMac, and placed my order for 'VGA Display Adapter'. Which shows on order form as 'APPLE VGA DISPLAY ADAPTER-GEN'. I later found that I needed compatibility for an 'iMac (Intel Core Duo)', returned 'VGA Display Adapter' and ordered 'Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter'. Which shows on order form as 'VID ADPT MINI-DVI TO VGA ADAPTER-GEN'.

    My new cable works like MAGIC, as I'm sure 'VGA Display Adapter' will for those who need it.

    Fantastic with LCD HD Ready TV

    I bought this little fellow a few months ago now, from an apple dealer, and although having to buy the vga cable itself, which some places can be nasty prices, this has been glorious. Its plugged into my Sony HD tv, a specific PC input, and when playing HD content on my mac, trailers, etc, it looks superb. Its just a shame i cant play multi region discs on my mac, VLC doesnt seem to work too well with Leopard, as im sure it might help make the DVDs look a little better than my old, S Video output, Dvd player. Anyway, a great adapter. Macx

    WARNING - Does not fit iMac Core 2 Duo

    Like another reviewer mentioned, Apple do need to make buying cables for older products more accurate. This item states 'designed for the iMac (Intel Core Duo)' so I bought it.

    I have an Intel Core 2 Duo late 2009 iMac and didn't spot that the wording was 'Core Duo' and not Core 2 Duo'. It doesn't fit.

    It is ridiculous that you have to click on each cable to see what it fits - this cable is the only one I could see that mentioned Core and Duo which is why I bought it. Now have to put it on eBay...

    Works Like a Dream-Just make sure you now what you're buying.

    This wire works straight out of the box. Just make sure you know what your buying. This wire is for the white macbooks. the mini display port to vga is for the aluminium macbooks.

    too short? extend with any VGA cable

    it works immediately, no hassle.

    I use mine with my white macbook and a 26" Bush HD TV. Yes the cable is stupidly short, but using my standard VGA cable i used for my PC monitor I could extend this cable enough to reach round the back of my TV or even across a desk.

    However Apple should definately release a longer version.

    I'd also say for the size of it, the cost is far too high, reasonable but only because its the only real option. £15 - should be £5-£8 for a tiny adapter.

    Absolutely Excellent

    I bought this adapter for my vga monitor to plug it into my 13 inch macbook. Although it took 3 days to arrive it was really easy to set up. I plugged my vga cable into my dell monitor and plugged the other end into this adapter. Plugged the adapter into my macbook and it worked straight away, I didn't even have to detect it. Worked straight away!!! Excellent. I highly recommend this cable.

    Works very well

    This is an adaptor. It works with the white macBook. The Mini DVI end goes into the macBook. The other end is VGA (female). You will need a VGA lead (male) which will connect to your TV/Monitor. I use it with a Sony Bravia which has a PC input (VGA). Works very well. No setup. Works immediately. If macbook is closed and re opened the picture does not return to TV in full size. disconnect lead and switch off TV and start again. Adjust viewing options on Mac and on TV for best sizing.

    WARNING Does NOT fit the Thunderbolt Port

    Apple have not quite yet got to grips with their new Thunderbolt Ports on the 2011 MacBooks. So be warned - the Apple Mini DVI end of this little adaptor WILL NOT FIT into the NEW THUNDERBOLT PORT - Apparently the adapter you need is the MINI-DISPLAY port to VGA.

    Apple are sending me out a FREE replacement - Great customer Service - When Apple gets it wrong, they take it on the chin.

    At some time in the future, there will probably be an adapter from the Thunderbolt to a hub which has all sorts of female sockets for DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI or VGA and also Firewire, USB and Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel. At the moment, although the port appears to be able to handle multiple inputs, the available adapters limit you to using one at a time. However, as few at Apple seem to know exactly what does fit with the Thunderbolt, it may be that actually the port can only ever be dedicated to one use at a time.... we will see...

    DVI to VGA adaptor

    Purchased for use with white macbook and panasonic LDV80 HD tv. Also required male vga to male vga cable.
    Worked very well as soon as connected. No set up was required other than selecting video mirroring on macbook.
    Also used audio cable from headphone jack on macbook to audio input on tv for sound.

    The quality is not quite good enoungh for the money.

    I have owned one of these for about nine months. I would agree that this is a necessary component, but for the price, I would not expect an adapter that can hardly stay secure. Also, the wiring inside has already degraded to the point where if I don't keep it completely straight, my screen is tinted very yellow. These are serious design flaws, because no one wants to be constantly replacing such a small component for this amount of money. I am usually pretty happy with apple, but this necessary component is quickly becoming a bit of a rip-off.

    I have a drawer full of cables

    Honestly how hard should it be to order a cable to go from mac to a VGA! Im on my 3rd 312 each time had to re-post back to supplier. Each description on the suppliers site said mini DV to VGA but there are at least three different types. Please Apple somethings you do make me wonder where the genius goes sometimes. get someone in to get your supply chain sorted.

    Great little gadget

    I've used this thingamagig for two years and it's a miracle worker - where PCs have failed to load on screen, the Mac has done so without incident. I use this on a multitude of projectors and screens in multiple locations per week and I can't recall a situation where I couldn't get it working - even when it was the location's problems mucking things up. Only thing is make sure you're getting the right connection - be certain that you don't need a Mini DisplayPort for some of the newer models - I use the Mini DVI with a MacBook and for projecting Keynote and in short it works a treat.

    Even Apple Store staff don't know which adapter to send

    As others have said, it wasn't very clear on the store site which adapter was the correct one. The descriptions seem to have been expanded a little but you still have to click on a few to find out which one you're after.
    I wanted a VGA adapter for my new MacBook. I phoned and explained to the Apple Store staff member (and repeated several times to make sure they understood) and was still sent the wrong adapter (DVI-VGA). On calling back, eventually found someone who knew which adapter was needed, so this one on the way.
    I have one for my ibook and presumed it would fit the MacBook. It's a shame that it doesn't come in the box and that the description of the MacBook doesn't make it clear you will need to buy a different adapter if you own an ibook etc. already.
    I'm presuming it will work as well as the ibook adapter so 4stars in anticipation..

    Try using a Macbook with this hanging off the side of it. The lack of retaining screws or any form of clip means it falls out all the time. Why can't we just have a DVI - RGB lead instead of this pathetic adaptor?

    Nothing SHORT of being great

    There's no doubting that this is a quality product and it does the job excellently, I just can't help feeling a little ripped off. Yes, I knew before I bought it that it's just an adapter but didn't take into account the price of the additional cable that I'd need to buy to rig up my MacBook to a LCD TV.

    Would it really be so much of a problem to produce a 50cm version which is a cable, not an adaptor?

    Overall, buy it, its a quality product but keep in mind that you'll probably have to buy another VGA cable for £15+ if you don't have one kicking around free.

    (Work) Life changing piece of kit.

    This is a glorious little thing. Beforehand I was trapped in my corporate Microsoft-owned world of work, where I'd have to give PowerPoint presentations using work-supplied Windows laptops.

    With this device, I can now import those presentations into Keynote, and connect my MacBook to their projector and control the whole thing wirelessly from my iPhone. It has turned the whole nightmarish experience of giving these presentations into a dream.

    And an absolute bargin at the price!

    Love it!
