Features

Automatic backup with Time Machine.

Time Capsule works automatically with Time Machine in OS X Leopard or later to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, and you can back up all the computers in your home to a central location. New technologies in Time Capsule and refinements to Time Machine make backing up to Time Capsule using Snow Leopard up to 75 percent faster than before.2

Server-grade storage.

The massive 2TB or 3TB server-grade hard drive gives you all the capacity and safety you need for backing up all your Mac computers.

Easy wireless networking.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is available as download for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.3

Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.

For maximum range and compatibility, Time Capsule works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.4

Guest networking

Set up a separate Wi-Fi network with a separate password for your visitors. Simply enable the guest networking feature, and your guests can use the Internet but can’t access other parts of your private network, such as your computers, printers and attached hard drives.

Wireless drive sharing.

Time Capsule also works great as a wireless hard drive, whether you have a Mac or a PC. It sets up in a snap, giving you a networked hard drive you can use for storing and sharing all kinds of files. If you use iCloud Back to My Mac with OS X Lion or later, you can even access the files on the drive over the Internet.

Print without wires.

Print documents, photos and more from any room in your home or office to a central printer connected to Time Capsule via USB. (See system requirements.)

Strong security and access controls.

Protect yourself with the built-in firewall and industry-standard encryption technologies including WPA/WPA2 and 128-bit WEP.

Works with iPad, iPhone, Apple TV and more.

Time Capsule works with Mac computers, PCs, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Apple TV and virtually all 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless devices — all at the same time.

Testing was conducted on pre-production 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo–based iMac (Late 2009) systems. Fine, while it lasts...

The good: Set-up is easy. Looks pretty.

The bad: In spite of allegedly server grade components, the inbuilt power supply is third rate junk. Mine failed after 19 months of light usage. This is apparently a known fault of the first generation Time Capsules. According to the Apple Store I got mine from the problem had been fixed on the version I have. I beg to differ. As a result they wouldn't replace mine.

If you absolutely must have a Time Capsule make sure you have Apple Care too. I'd recommend an external hard-drive and a decent quality router as a more reliable and flexible alternative.

    Very disappointed.

    Great product!

    • Written by from Vejle

The TimeCapsule is a great product for backing-up your Mac. It is easy to set up, has a powerful router and great design.

And to all of the negative reviews made on the old Time Capsules, on which the power supplies died:

Be aware that this is the 4th generation Time Capsule, you are making a review on. Not the 1st, 2nd or 3rd. I can understand your disappointment. But your reviews are misleading, as this is a much newer version, which does not neccessarily suffer from similar issues.

    No Surprises

    • Written by from ABERDEEN

Its an Airport Extreme with a built-in hard drive. Same easy setup, same reliability and easy backup.
You could get cheaper by using a NAS or a USB drive but my experience wasn't good with that as the external drive (a WD World edition) didn't respond sometimes and missed backups. So I sold both and got this for just a little more.
The other plus with this is the drive is totally silent.

One cautionary note: Despite the "server grade" claim, it isn't. If you are after a backup solution for a business, buy a raid-based system but this is an ideal home backup.

    Happy thus far

    • Written by from Weybridge

Bought the 2TB to replace my WD 1TB which have given up the ghost and I must say has lived up to expectations.

Installation was simple, straight forward even with bridged to current Sky router. All very smooth and up in running in minutes. Switched over all other WiFi devices to new Time Capsule and all is very well.

Seems to have solved issues I was having with Sky WiFi as well which is a bonus indeed!

    Absolute nightmare to set up

    • Written by from London

I am fairly experienced in IT and the setup of this was a nightmare, I received lots of error messages upon set up and had to spend a fair amount of time searching the internet for help. This is not the 'apple' experience you would expect. More
