Beware if you want to stream on demand!
I bought this adapter with the intention of connecting my ipad to my tv and streaming apps such as Lovefilm, BBC iPlayer and 4od. Be aware that none of these applications will work when connected via HDMI to a display. You will receive a notification that states the app does not support.
Possibly ignorance on my part, but to me, this was a big plus point of buying the adapter in the first place. I contacted 4od and received the below response when I asked why there was no support:
"Unfortunately the reason Airplay no longer works is that we don't have the rights to broadcast all our shows using Airplay, so this feature is not enabled."
Hope this helps. …- Written by Gurminder P from Bristol

It does work with SOME on-demand services
I pondered for a while whether to get this cable or not, as I really wasn't clear which on-demand services it was compatible with. After visiting a store to ask the staff, it seems there was a little confusion at their end too, which probably isn't Apple's fault per se.
Basically, this cable will only mirror the full audio/video of on-demand apps if the app-maker/content-creator allows it. I've tried it with a few different services and, contrary to what one other commenter here says, it does actually work with iPlayer. Well, I watched a range of TV shows from my iPad Mini on the big screen, no issues, but that's not to say there won't be some shows that won't work if there is rights-related issues.
I tried it with LoveFilm, only the audio worked. With 4oD, nothing worked at all. Luckily, the main player I wanted this cable fore - Eurosport Player - does work with it.
So yeah, if you're looking to stream content from on-demand players to your TV, just bear in mind some work, some don't.
I'm giving it 4 stars because it's mostly fine for my needs, and it does actually work for content stored on the device itself, as well as YouTube and the likes. I just wish Apple would put a warning somewhere in the product description explaining the issue with on-demand - I bet a lot of folk buy this cable only to be disappointed. …- Written by Paul S from EDINBURGH

Great
Just what we need, mirror your lightning connector apple device on an hdmi equipped screen. A lightning port on the adaptor allows you to charge/power your device while you see it on your big screen. Maybe surfing which beats any pc for size! Very handy adaptor in my opinion. Of course, you could mirror your device with an Apple TV device but this cable adaptor saves connecting to the network and of course, can easily be used on a friend's TV (simply connect to an hdmi socket, need an hdmi cable of course) to show pictures etc. …

Fine with Netflix
I thought this was a bit expensive but I needed it so got it anyway.
I hadn't realised that there were issues with certain apps not working with this adaptor.
I bought it for mirroring my screen and mainly for watching Netflix on my HDTV.
For Netflix it works fine. In Netflix while choosing a film, the HDMI output shows a full screen Netflix logo, while playing the film the HDMI shows the movie as you would hope while the iPad screen shows a static Netflix logo. …- Written by Paul F from Coventry

Blocked by almost ALL video streaming apps, no 5.1 surround
This adapter does not "mirror" what is shown on your screen, but rather "streams" it to your TV. This feature is blocked by DRM on almost all popular streaming video apps, including Amazon Instant Video, DirecTV, LoveFilm, 4od, BBC iPlayer. etc.
As another reviewer stated, the Lightning adapter is a step back from the previous iPhone HDMI adapter which did support full surround sound. …- Written by Antony M from Corringham
