Important tip for using with iPod or other auxiliary source

    • Written by from BROOKLYN

I am using these mostly to play what's on my iPod. I initially thought the sound wasn't all that, wasn't worth the money, etc. I forgot that ages ago I had turned on the EQ feature on my iPod to 'electronic,' which sounded better with the headphones I was using. By turning EQ off, I instantly understood what everyone was saying in the other reviews. They sound great. No five stars only because of the price and a few little niggly things with the remote, which I won't go into here.

    The best computer desktop speakers...PERIOD!

    • Written by from Corinth

I did a lot of research before I purchased these from the Apple Store last night. The reviewers who knew what they were talking about gave these MM-1's rave reviews. The only criticism was from the "boomers" who want the walls to shake, and who really do not care about sound quality, imaging, openness, etc.

I went to the Apple Store, hoping to audition them (I know, not the best environment for that). However, they no longer had them setup in the store. So, I just purchased them sight unseen (and unheard). That was a BIG leap of faith to spend $500 based on company reputation and customer reviews.

Once I set them up next to my 27" iMac, plugged them into the USB port, turned them on and routed my sound to the MM-1's, they were up and running. All I can say is WOW!! The stage imaging is amazing. You here the instruments and vocals exactly where the sound engineer put them in the recording! Lower bit rate MP3s sound amazing. However, you can really tell a difference in higher bit rate recordings, CDs, DVDs. The "openness" of these speakers is incredible. I put on Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, and just sat back and enjoyed the performance. I was hearing it again for the first time!

The sweet-spot listening distance is perfectly located where you sit at your computer.

If you are researching the best, audiophile-quality desktop speaker, stop looking and buy these. Don't get caught up with them not having a sub-woofer. There is plenty of clean, punchy, crisp bass for all music tastes. I am officially on the Bowers & Wilkins bandwagon!

    Awesome Speakers

    • Written by from Baltimore

I'm very impressed with the quality and sound of these speakers. They have great range and plenty of power for a desktop speaker. They might not be big enough to carry an entire room but are perfect for my home office. I'd give them six stars if the price point was $400 but what the hey. You should buy these speakers and enjoy.

I love this product since I bought it but it has been giving me popping sound every time I start playing my music so I'm not sure what's happening but I will give them a call. Overall quality is great.

    Excellent

My 1980-vintage Cambridge Miniworks sub-satellite system recently died and after trying every other brand I could find, including the Bose Companion series mentioned by others, I could not find anything that sounded anywhere nearly as good as these. Not inexpensive, but worth every cent.

I got these speakers for Christmas. If you are using your speakers for listening to music I don't think the B&W MM-1's can be beaten for their price and size. The audio quality is amazingly clear. It really does make music sound better.

    Perfect for the right application.

    • Written by from Mequon

I have a small office; for long work sessions, headphones are fatiguing. The MM-1's are currently sitting two feet from my ears, on either side of my laptop. The soundstage is magnificent. The detail is outstanding. Vocals and classic instrumentation will blow your mind.

I listen to a significant amount of (well crafted) electronica as well; here is where you may expect too much. For their size, they produce outstanding warmth, presence, and natural bass. The bypass will adjust the sound to optimize for the speaker; you won't get distortion - but it will tone down lower frequencies significantly.

That said, I am absolutely amazed at what has been packed into two *very* small packages. It's impressive, and I believe they are worth the price of admission.

    Best 2.0 speakers br far

    • Written by from White Lake

I'm not sure where all the whining about low bass and white noise originates, has to be either defective speakers so go exchange them, or written by Bose and Klipsch employees. First, anybody expecting DEEP LOW BASS from 2.0 speakers needs to get realistic and go buy a 2.1 speaker system, and have fun with the extra wires. I have ZERO white, black, or blue noise emanating from mine, and I just gave up on the iHome USB powered speakers because of the high pitched whistle when plugged in. These speakers are fantastic and produce bass better than the Bose system in my '12 Nissan which wasn't as good as the Panasonic system in my '05 Honda. I have these hooked up to a mid-2010 iMac and when turned up 3/4 I can hear the music fine from my den to my kitchen in a ranch home. The bass is fairly deep although gets maybe a little boomy when the iTunes equalizer is up high on the 32 through 125 levels. For Mac speakers these are awesome, if you want symphony sound filling up a large room or entire house please invest in a true audio component system.

AMAZING. But B&W could of done a little better.

    • Written by

These are AMAZING seakers but i have a pair of b&w 802 series and expected them to have a little more kick in the bass like the 802. But besides that there are just flat our AMAZING. I would have been nice to see an external bass unite to provide the extra umph but there still worth the money even with out that.

I just want to first start off that I don't usually write reviews and have no real knowledge about stereo system. However, even for an amateur person like me, I can tell that this stereo is just incredible. In all honesty, I was very doubtful that I could really tell a difference between a speaker enhanced iMac and non speaker iMac. Boy, was I wrong! I cannot believe that I waited this long to purchase this product. The thing that makes this even more unbelievable is that the design is simple and elegant. It looks really good with your apple products. I cannot recommend this enough. Set up takes couple of minute and you are ready to go.

    Disappointed

    • Written by from Albuquerque

I've had these speakers for about 2 weeks now and have run them in well.

I purchased them based on my experience with B&W loudspeakers I do and have owned in the past, and the reviews here and other web resources. I currently have B&W 803S loudspeakers in my home sound system. I'm quite willing to pay for quality.

I also had a Lexus with a Nakamichi system and the Toyota I currently own has the JBL system.

    I replaced 12 year-old Monsoons with these MM-1 speakers.

I have to say I am quite disappointed with the MM-1. The mid-to-high sound is excellent. But regarding the mid-to-low sound I am very disappointed.

I wasn't expecting bass on the level of any of the other systems I have. But what I wasn't expecting was the almost complete lack of any bass, and even the mid range is very lacking.

Music sounds pretty good. I would rate that as adequate. Game audio is simply pathetic.

I'm sure I could have done better with <$200 speakers from Radio Shack.

Made me appreciate my music in a new way. New life long B&W customer.

    • Written by from New York

Music is a big part of my life, yet despite this for years I listened on sub-standard equipment. I just didn't worry that I might be missing out on something else -- the hooks, melodies, and lyrics were enough to keep me interested. I was given a pair of klipsch headphones as a gift a few years back and only then realized that I might actually be missing out on something and perhaps should get some external speakers for my laptop/monitor setup. After reading several reviews and heading over to the Apple store to listen to the MM1's, I decided to buy a pair. Well, I was hooked. The sound was and still is phenomenal. I work from home and sometimes play music in the background and occasionally have to stop and marvel at the depth, breadth, and quality of the sound that these speakers generate. Now, mind you, these are near field speakers and function best when used that way -- within a few feet from the listener. Despite this, they're also great if I want to sit back on the couch and watch a movie on my monitor from a reasonable distance (about 8-12 feet). I was so happy with these that I've since abandoned my klipsch for a pair of C5's as well as a pair of P5's and now recommend B&W to any of my friends who ask.

Exceptional Quality in a Brilliant Design

    • Written by from Pickering

I've owned these speakers for around four months now and have enjoyed every ounce of sonic goodness emanating from their compact minimalist design. Said design is timeless, and I've had many comments about the looks of them next to my iMac. The most impressive part of these speakers is the differentiation between the highs and bass; they have excellent fidelity and yet the bass is quite good for a 2.0 setup. It's not over-the-top bass like I find with several Bose units, and the highs do not reach the "tinny" level. At the same time, they have great depth and if you close your eyes, you can place where each instrument is on the stage in front of you. Unlike some reviews, mine have no hissing present during soft parts of songs.

A few notes for those who do not own these: there is a blue light when they are turned on and a red one when turned off; they do not turn on automatically when the computer turns on; and when turned off, your computer simply roots sound through its built-in speakers. The only cons I can think of are that the right speaker does get rather warm on the top after moderate use, and the remote is not the greatest. Very minor complaints, and for good reason: these speakers are spectacular.

    In one word WOW !!!

    • Written by from Thornhill

I have been using the Focal Pro CMS 50 speakers with the Focal sub on my iMac 27" for several years.
Few days ago my focal system stopped working, so till I can send them for repair I decided to buy a smaller speaker system.
I read the reviews on the Apple Store sight and base on that I bought the MM-1 at the Apple store.
Connection was a fast and straight forward and took all of 10 minutes.
After listening to many kinds of music for several hours, all I can say is a big WOW.
The base on the Focal is much better because I was using the Focal Sub.
As for the rest, the sound of the MM-1 in the mid and high range is AS GOOD AS THE FOCAL and on many tracks it is even better then the Focal. I am really SHOCKED. The price difference between the two systems is about CS 3000.
I recommend this system all heartily.

It's hard to describe how amazing is this product.
It simply changed the way I listen to music.
The sound is deep, clear, powerful and delightful.

I recommend this to exigent listeners. This is a high end product.

Worth every cent. It's very easy to install, plug n play.

    Congratulations Bowers & Wilkins.

    Magical sound for size

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I live in NYC area and was looking for a compact speaker system to attach to my TV/ Apple TV to function as my primary sound system. I am in a 2 bedroom, so not a studio, but space is at a premium. Plus wife hates large speakers....So main goal was best sound in small package.

I was replacing a Bose sub/satellite system that I was less than impressed with (especially having to place a large sub). I had read reviews and actually bought the MM-1s with no prior testing other than random other B&W products.

My wife was skeptical when I brought them home but after we set them up, we spent the next 3 hours listening to any and all music we could try out because they sound AMAZING.. so hard to believe that the quality and amount of sound comes out of this tiny package.

And to note.. I am only using the 'Aux' mini jack to connect to my LCD tv that is connected via HDMI to my apple tv. Apple TV sounds great.. TV movies, concerts sound great. Clean sound, great stereo imaging..Def no huge bass but still more than adequate for apartment living.. great design, remote. Well worth the money. And if I ever move to a larger home, they will make amazing bedroom or kitchen speakers. HIGHLY recommend.

    I've been a B & W fan for 30 years!

    • Written by from west chicago

No one makes a better high end product like B & W does. I have 7 speakers built in my walls and they blow everyone away. Also, in our lake cabin I purchased the same speakers but freestanding. I also have a M-series setup in a less used room. My point is I've turned the speaker industry upside down every time I want to upgrade by reading and then listening to various lines of speakers. I could have spent a fortune setting my office up as if it was my main video/audiophile room. The sky is the limit with these high end systems. These two speakers do exactly what I want, superior clarity, full sound as you can get from this footprint & as simple to use as to setup. You can never go wrong with B & W! Incidentally, I gave my Bose away as soon as I could afford B & W. Night & day.

Great sound, great cable management. They simply work, without a lot of unruly wires protruding or taking too much space.
