    Cheap and wears out fast

    • Written by from TORONTO

This case is expensive. It doesn't feel like leather nor look like it. I've had my case for maybe 6 months. It's already worn out.

    Very poor Apple.

Great material but not as functional as the Original smart cover

    • Written by from san Antonio

I just bought a Mini iPad to replace my iPad 3, I had the smart cover with the iPad 3, and I fell in love with the functionality and the way it looked, so it was obvious I was going to get one with the Mini iPad as well and of course I had to upgrade to the smart cover, to my disappointment the cover does not work as well as the original smart cover, the magnets are too week, or the way the cover folds don't hold the weight of the iPad, so it continuously falls over, but the materials and the way the iPad looks is great, will be returning the cover and buying another brand. (and I'm an apple fan)

    Terrible product, sneaky company.

    • Written by from Portland

Apple realised the Polyurethane Smart Case was the best way to go, so they took it out of the list for the iPad Air to force people to buy the Leather one. It is way too expensive for it just to be leathery... It does not close well and the worst thing: THE JACK HOLE ONLY FITS THE APPLE HEADPHONES JACK!!!! For anything else you have to take the iPad out of the case. This is unacceptable! Really disappointed from the "design geniuses".

WILL NOT protect your iPad from a 3ft fall

    • Written by from Atlanta

Despite the negative reviews about this case, I made the decision to get it for what I believed to be the "craftsmanship". I learned things the hard way and am writing this review so hopefully you don't have to. My iPad Mini with Retina display took a 3ft plunge and not only did the screen cover flip open but the iPad came completely OUT of the case, face down on the asphalt. I now have a brand new iPad with a cracked screen and a pitted frame. A case that claims such high stakes (and price) should be able to at least protect your $700 investment from a small fall. I now don't even want to look at my damaged iPad, much less the case. Will not only not recommend it, but go out of my way to warn people of the poor protection this case really offers.

    and to wit....hellishly expensive.

    Stand keeps falling

    • Written by from Toronto

The case looks and feels great however using the roll over stand feature is frustrating because it keeps falling down- leaving you with the iPad flat on your surface. If I hadn't used the case for as long as I have I would get a refund because it is a waste if I can't utilize all intended functions. Buyer beware

An extension of Apple's poorly made accessories

    • Written by from Tampa

This case is probably the worst smart case that I've ever purchased for an iPad. The cover does not close properly; there is always a gap on the left-hand side by the hinge. The stand functions rarely work; it always seems to collapse. The cover, when open, should magnetically stick to the back of the case; it doesn't. My iPad 3 smart case did not behave this way, it works wonderfully. For the price of these cases, I would expect Apple to make a quality product--this one falls fall far short. I immediately took it back to the Apple Store and of course the Apple "geniuses" thought I was crazy, yet when they tried to demonstrate how the stand should work, and how the back cover should magnetize to the case, it was slipping and sliding all over the place. Hey, at least I got a good laugh but of course I could not return the product because Apple does not have a customer-centric view of quality service or standing behind their products. I've already purchased a new, "non-Apple" case… Can't wait to trash this piece of junk.

    Cover folds awkwardly, otherwise great

    • Written by from Corona

In many ways the iPad Air Smart Case is an improvement over the older iPad (non-air) Smart Case. The newer case no longer has the rough edges that runs along all sides of the older case, which makes holding the iPad much more comfortable (the case no longer digs into the palms). The newer case is made of leather, and it looks and feels so much better than the older polyurethane case. Seriously, the feel of the iPad Air Smart Case blows the older case out of the water. It even seems to fit more snugly than the older case.

My main complaint with the new case is the way the screen folds. Since the iPad Air is narrower than the previous generation iPads, the case's cover is also narrower. So instead of having 4 panels and 3 folds, the newer case has 3 panels and 2 folds. Unlike some other reviewers, I have yet to experience issues with using the new fold configuration to stand the iPad Air up or tilt it for typing, but I have been having issues with finding a comfortable way of folding the cover back when using the iPad Air.

On the older case, I'd just fold the cover in half (via the 2nd fold), and the magnet would snap the cover in half. This gets the cover out of the way when the cover is in the back of the iPad. However, the newer cover doesn't have a magnet that snaps the panels together, and when folding the panels together, they don't really stay shut, and it's very hard to find a comfortable way of keeping the cover in the back of the case without it dangling of getting in the way.

If my description is hard to understand, I highly suggest going into an Apple Store and see and play with the cover for yourself. There is so much to love about this case, and I am not unhappy that I have it (it's the case I am using), but I just wish the cover isn't quite so annoying.

    Can be good

    • Written by from Anahola

I returned my first two smart cases after having issues with vertical stand instability (folding cover kept collapsing) and the cover not folding flat behind the case. I thought I would try one more smart case because I liked the light weight. The case I have now is stable in the vertical position (the magnet holds the folding cover in place in the vertical stand position, it did not on my first cover) and the cover easily folds flat behind the case. The light weight and fit of this case are fantastic. I can recommend this case if you can find one that is not defective.

    Decent protection. EGREGIOUS functionality.

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I'll make a quick list of pros and cons:

    Pros:
    High quality feel
    Decent protection
    Aesthetically pleasing

    Cons:
The front cover does not fold completely back. It sounds minor but it quickly becomes extremely annoying. There is always a slight bump if you decide to hold your iPad while you use it. Furthermore, because it doesn't fold flush with the back of the iPad, it pulls at the left of the case. You end up left with a deformed case that eventually won't close properly.

They claim the cover works as a stand (upright landscape position). Sure, it will stand, but don't dare try to tap or touch the screen of your iPad when it is in this position. The slightest tiny tap will cause the stand to dismantle and the iPad to fall flat. Furthermore, the stand creates a nearly 90 degree angle. I have not come across a single situation where either stand orientation has been helpful at all.

If the case was, say, $30, I probably would have thought, "Eh, it's not a great case, but oh well." But for $80, I feel robbed.

OK - Not worth the price

    • Written by from Georgetown

The smart case for iPad Air is an OK case. It does a good job at protecting the iPad. However, it isn't the most stable when put in the video viewing mode. Slightest bump and the iPad will fall over. Also, the leather picks up every piece of grease and stains easily (as I would expect any leather cover to do). The last concern I have is that the case doesn't fully close at the hinge. There is a gap near the hinge when the cover is closed.

    Great protection and appearance

    • Written by from Portland

I picked up the light brown version of this case for my new iPad Air. Previously, I've had a Smart Cover for iPad 3 and the original Apple case for iPad 1. This is by far the best solution of the bunch.

The case is leather, which means that it picks up the wear markings and oils - like anything made of that material. I like this look, as I do on well-used briefcases and portfolios. The body of the iPad is very well protected by the hardened leather shell, while the Smart Cover works as expected to automatically lock the iPad screen when closed. It looks great and feels really solid when carried.

This case doesn't function well as a stand, but I've never found "cover as stand" to be very useful on any prior cases, either. It does work well to prop up the iPad in landscape mode for typing, which is how I use it. I use the Amazon Basics stand for my iPad when I want to prop it up for viewing, as that works better than any cover.

The headphone opening is small, and fits Apple earbuds. I had to enlarge it slightly to accommodate my Bose MIE2s, using an Exacto knife. I do not subtract points for my personal preferences in this regard, the fix was easy. I am very pleased with this case - and the new iPad Air.

    Excellent Case

    • Written by from Elizabethtown

When I bought my iPad I wanted a case that would compliment it. I was not disappointed with the Air Smart Case. I had an iPad 2 with an Otter Box and it felt very bulky. With my new Air Smart Case it feels very slim like the iPad Air is suppose to feel like. I use it for sales presentations and it is very easy to use and looks great! I own a company and bought it for my salesmen and they love it too. We like how it props up so our clients can watch our presentations. I would highly recommend it.

    Great idea poorly executed!

    • Written by from Meriden

This is a very well thought of case, however the functionality is poor to say the least. It has a very nice feel to it both tactile and weight wise, it basically does not add any significant weight to the iPad and feels great to the touch, however, it lacks the ability to stay in place when used as a stand. When in vertical mode the cover does not stay well enough in place behind the iPad. The magnet that holds the flap attached to the back should've been stronger, it repeatedly comes loose and you have to constantly keep pushing it back into place.

The landscape stand feature is virtually non existent, since even the slightest touch can make the iPad collapse backwards. I am quite surprised that such a pricey Signature Apple accessory performs so poorly. Engineering team please wake up, if the consumer is asked to pay such a high price for an accessory, the least the customer can expect is that the case will at least live up to its name and do what it promises to do.

To recap, the case feels great to the touch and adds virtually no significant weight to your iPad, but everything else about it fails to satisfy the specific needs of the consumer. Sorry to say I expected much more from such an expensive Apple accessory, or has Apple just lost all sense of how tight money is nowadays.

Lovely material, some minor but irritating flaws

    • Written by from Flanders

It's a nice enough case with pros and cons. Overall, I like it.

    On the down side:
Audio hole is too small (this is really a problem with several headphones).
Difficult or impossible to use the stand in portrait orientation.
Magnets not always strong enough to hold it in the rolled up configuration.
Flap tries hard to block the camera.

    On the plus side:
Smooth grippy lovely material. Doesn't quite feel like just leather, seems a little technical, a little engineered, but it feels great. I've had the black for 5 months now, and use it every day. It picks up some debris on occasion, but is easily cleaned by brushing. Finger oils haven't had much effect, if perhaps improved the character a little (mostly no change). There has been no color loss.
    It's thin and light.
It protects the iPad well on all sides. It's not an Otter Box, but few need that. It has enough of a lip to protect the screen when laid face down on a smooth surface, but small enough to not get in the way of typing or interfering with any other touch activities.

In the end, though, it's the size of the headphone hole that I find most annoying, fitting less than half of the headphones I've tried. But this isn't enough affect the overall goodness of the nice feeling protector of the iPad.

nice fell being leather... "lid" not nearly as good...

    • Written by from Minden

I had the previous Apple case for the 3rd and 4th gen iPads... the flap that makes the stand and cover is much better on the older one as it wraps into itself enough that it will stay wrapped. This one feels nice but unless you've got it sitting in the more flat position, this one won't hold the "rolled up" nature and gets very frustrating. I do like the black color option, just should have been designed better for an Apple product.

    I don't recommend this case.

    • Written by from Williamsport

I recently received the black cover for my new iPad air and I was not happy from beginning to end. Let's start off with the price,
It is 30.00 more than the original iPad cover and it's less material. Then there is the problem with using it as a stand to watch anything.
It falls over nine times out of ten, unless I prop it up against something. This is my third iPad, and like other customers I have always
Put my iPads in cases, but this time I was willing to risk no case rather than put that ill crafted case on it.
So it went back got my 85.00 bucks back and purchased a case for half that price that I love. I recommend shopping around for cheaper covers.

I'm not sure what the problem that many reviewers have with the cover standing. If you follow the diagram on the box the case works great. The quality of the cover and the leather is excellent. Would definitely recommend.
