Replaced a 5th generation and got between 4 and 10 times better N signal in various parts of our house that used to suffer. Easy migration as well.

    Amazing!

I've used (tried) several different routers over the last 4 yrs including linksys EA3500, ASUS RT-AC 66U, and the Netgear N750. I tried all of these routers because I was unhappy with my original Apple Extreme. The original Extreme just wouldn't reach the far corners of my single story home.
I did finally settle on the second generation of the Apple Extreme after Apple bumped up the wattage (strength) on it, and have been using it ever since. I wasn't completely happy with it, but it did a reasonably good job.
I was completely surprised to see the release of this newest Apple Extreme, and decided to give it a try since it really touted increased speed and most importantly range.
I have to say that my personal search is now over. This thing has excellent signal strength throughout my entire house, and is performing really nicely.
    Easy to setup as well.
Apple definitely has a winner with this one!

    Fast and Furious...

    • Written by from Oklahoma City

I usually do not write reviews on apple.com but had to on this new device. Frankly, I have often been under whelmed with new and improved products. That would be the case for the previous gen Airport Extreme. It seemed a little better than previous gen but no earth shattering progress.

Not true with this new iteration of the Airport Extreme.
    1. setup. Simply begin by plugging it in. Then pull up the setup menu via utilities and Airport. It will tell you to unplug the cables from your old Extreme and plug into the new.
Once you do that it just takes over and transfers all your connection info. It took about 10 minutes because after it had copied my settings over it downloaded a firmware update.
    2. speed. I have a 60mbs hard wired connection. My house is around 3,000 square feet all on one level. My office is located in one corner. The opposite corner diagonally from this room is where we have a media room. In that room my speed tests using macbook air, Kindle hd, cell phones, etc... showed a consistent 15mbs. I also would have times when using either my apple tv or roku box.......and then using a wireless tablet etc..... where the speed would slow down to the point where the connection would be lost. This is history. I now get a constant 30-40mbs using internet speed test in the same room. A BIG jump.
    Very happy

Does what 3 Airport Express stations could not do!

    • Written by from San Mateo

I was struggling with a large estate that has thick walls and no option to run ethernet cables. No matter what I did the coverage and speed was very intermitted. Dramatic fluctuations of coverage with in the same room!
Replaced all 3 (new model) Airport Express stations with one new Airport Extreme. All problems solved!

Going to install some more this friday in an other location.

    Exceptionally fast

Extended my new Time Capsule with new Airport Extreme. Wow! Paying for 25 megabit per sec download speed from ComCast and have never seen that on speedtest.net, but now I'm getting 27 mbit/sec download speed consistently with new MacBook Pro Retina display. Set up with Airport Utility software was extremely easy. Steve said in the wake of the iPhone 4 antenna issue they had labs at Apple to test wireless signals. I'm glad he left us such a great lab and engineers to produce marvels like this. This base station has been a huge boost to our wireless speed and reliability. Still looks nice on the sofa table in the main room, too.

    Finally........

    • Written by from Burlington

I've tried several routers over the years, and have not had much luck. Finally went with this, despite the cost. It's worth every penny. Easy to set up, very easy to use, great signal range throughout my large ranch house (about 1700 sq. feet). Very happy with the purchase, would highly recommend. I'm a recent Apple convert and have had excellent support any time I have needed it, and all of my purchases have been top notch.

Amazingly Easy to Replace an Airport Extreme

    • Written by from Geneva

I plugged in the new Airport Extreme and connected with my iPhone 5 (running a developer preview of iOS7). The new Airport Extreme asked if I was replacing my old Airport Extreme and if it should duplicate all the settings. I said yes. It then told me to move all the cables over. I did and it booted up using the same network name/password - everything! Just needed to reboot my cable modem and update the firmware on the AE to 7.7.1 and BAM it was good to go. I love Apple products! Great signal strength too.

    Fast and Powerful

I bought this to replace my Airport Extreme 2nd Generation (which is still working just wanted to upgrade). The wireless router is located on the 2nd floor of my house and in my downstairs living room I was only getting 4-5 mbps. I have 30mbps service so I used an Airport Express (wired) to extend the range.

I hooked this router up and without any range extender I was getting 25-28mbps everywhere in my house. I used the old router now (since everything I have is N) as the range extender and consistently get 30+mbps in my living. I really didn't need too since the speed with just the new router was excellent but I figured since I have it, I might as well use it. I also hooked up my TV receiver and PS3 with a wire to the old Airport extreme since they do not support N. Now I can stream HD movies very fast.

The Airport express is now just used for AirPlay on my back deck.

    Great product so far!!!

    Best Router EVER!!!

    • Written by from Jamaica

Went from using an Airport Extreme extended by an Airport Express and now this new router replaces both of them. It is extremely fast and its coverage is superb. I now get a signal in the bedroom where as all routers that I ever owned before (Linksys, Belkin & Apple) have failed. I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

    Big improvement over last gen

    • Written by from SAN DIEGO

I've owned the last several Airport Extremes and each was better than the previous. I've also owned many routers from competitors as well (D-Link, Linksys, and so on), but the Extremes have all been more reliable and almost never need rebooting.

This most recent gen has really improved coverage and speed in my old home, which I suspect is from the new design and placement of antennae.

The only downside is it's not really wall mountable...I bought a $15 'invisible' book shelf from the Container Store which is the perfect size to hold the AirPort Extreme (I ran my Ethernet line through a wall so the AirPort Extreme is located in a common hallway).

Speeds are now FASTER, more CONSISTENT, and the RANGE is much better.

    Nice job Apple engineers.

PS. I've not tried it with an 80211.ac device yet like the new MacBook Air so I cannot testify to that new element.

    Simply fantastic!

I have owned MANY WiFi routers over the years and this Airport Extreme is by far the best. Super easy to configure yet has the key configuration options you need such as port forwarding and WPS printer setup. It was really easy to extend my network from an Airport Time Capsule with the Airport Utility, just a few clicks and I have excellent coverage in all parts of a large one story home. Pay no attention to those one-star reviewers who obviously have other issues with their networks.

    Excellent router!! A definite BUY!!

    • Written by from Sherman Oaks

I have a single story 2500 sq foot house with a separate detached living area (built off the garage), so there's a wide area of coverage needed with older thick walls. We area an apple family - with a dozen clients (iMacs, Mac Books, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, PS3, etc.) needing wifi coverage. (I was also using a new Airport Express to extend my network into the detached loft).

I had upgraded to Time Warner's Ultimate Internet service (50 Mbps), but I was only getting the high speed on an iMac that was physically connected to my old Airport router via ethernet. I was having to reboot my router more than once a day to get the speeds to pick up from horrible to simply passable - Netflix movies would stop streaming - kids were screaming - it wasn't pretty.

I researched all the new high end AC1900 routers (Netgear Nighthawk R7000, Asus RT-AC68U), and I have to admit I was tempted to finally drop my long term reliance on Apple Airport products. Then I remembered that the Apple Airport had always been so easy to use and I don't need to break into my router to configure it in any non-standard way, so after reading some decent reviews - I went back to my Apple roots and bought the new Airport Extreme (w/AC).

I don't have any AC clients yet, but I can say this: I was able to swap out the router and have a new network up and running in less than 60 seconds flat. I used the old network name and every device automatically reconnected to the network without having to do anything.

I am now getting 50 Mbps on my Mac Book Pro (n) - when previously I had only been getting 5 Mbps! The increased range is incredible too - reaching full strength everywhere now where it hadn't before.

Conclusion - if you're a multiple Apple user like me and have an existing airport that's causing your internet to become sluggish - and your family's patience at it's limits - stop reading about all those other routers and buy this one.

    AMAZING!

    • Written by from Norwalk

I must admit… This is the first time I ever wrote a review on any item of which I purchased. The Airport Extreme certainly deserves a review! This router has literally transformed my house into a fully internet accessible home connecting every single wireless device; and there are a bunch! I pad’s, I phone’s laptops, DVD players and a bunch more. It even reaches places that I never thought would reach! For instance my porch area on the other side of the house. The range of this beats in incredible! I walked well over one hundred feet into my neighbor’s yard and I still had 3-4 reception bars. Amazing! I highly recommend this item to anyone who wants the very best internet access. It’s a little pricy but well worth it. The set-up is a piece of cake. Literally took me a few minutes!

    Best wireless router to date!

    • Written by from Fort Dix

I have nothing, but positive things to say about the AirPort Extreme. Quick story why I took a chance and purchased this product. I am a FIOS customer and running their Quantum 50/25 Mbps. For those who are familiar with their initial issue wireless router know that it is pretty pathetic running on G band. I live in 1800 sqft condo and the router is located in the living room. I was lucky to get a signal up the stairs if at all. So, I decided to buy their N band wireless router which improved the range, but not by much. I was getting roughly 20/10 Mbps throughout the house. After going through and reading a lot of the positive reviews on here I decided to shell out the $184 and purchase it. Best decision ever! I bridged the AirPort Extreme through the FIOS router and now getting 58/38 Mbps throughout the house. Its pretty insane of the difference it makes.

    Greatly improved range and reliability

    • Written by from MOUNT KISCO

I live in a large house and was previously using a linksys ea6500 router and netgear range extender to get whole house coverage. This set-up proved extremely unreliable as different devices would regularly lose contact, things would need to be rebooted, repowered and reconnected, generally a nightmare. Enter the new AirPort Extreme, on it's own it covers the entire house and a decent radius outside so we can work wirelessly on our deck and in our backyard. The speed even at the farthest point in our house from the router is excellent. The set-up took two minutes. I had purchased an AirPort Express along with the AirPort Extreme thinking I would need to extend the coverage but the extreme is so powerful I have returned the express. Excellent all around.

Incredible, does more than advertised actually

    • Written by from lexington

I have an airport extreme only 5 months only (5th generation), but when I picked up this new Airport Extreme with the redesigned antenna geometry, and the Ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi; I KNEW I'd get better bi-di communication on my brand new 2013 macbook air, which I do, but what turned out a real shocker is Im getting around 30% faster www cruising on my Ipad 4th gen and my Ipad mini! Why didn't apple Inc. advertise "Hey, not ONLY will you get blazing better speeds with the new Ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi,...but ALSO you'll notice faster speeds on your Ipads and other devices"

My wifi on my 2012 Macbook Pro is about 20% or more faster on downloads and MUCH faster refresh on known sites.

I was planning on getting faster speeds on ONLY my new Macbook Air, and FURTHER stronger signal strength. But additionally a HUGE PLUS is my now-faster Ipad communications and home networking speeds.

Was it worth the $200 considering I had a basically a new (older model) airport extreme? Absolutely YES. WORTH IT!

AirPort Extreme Base Station: another out-the-park home run

    • Written by from Kenner

It was time to get serious and call Mother Apple for the latest and greatest AirPort Extreme Base Station when my D-link WBR-2310 RangeBooster G Wireless Router went off the reservation. The emblematically elegant Airport Extreme micro-tower was delivered in two days and ten minutes later she was vigorously pumping a flood of energy to all points in my single story sprawling 4,400 square foot home. The Base Station immediately prompted for a seamless firmware update on initial connection and subsequent configuration with Apple's complementary Airport Utility iPhone app was incredibly simple and intuitive. Simplicity of installation, price point, form & functionality, performance, support, and Apple's "no questions asked" money back guarantee made this device a game breaker for me. And kudos to my Apple sales person, Adrian, for clearly and accurately presenting the multiple advantages and ease of installation of the Airport Extreme device, as well as to Apple Inc. for adeptly removing the pain from router installation and management.
